Song of the Day: udal enbaar from pudhu seruppu kadikkum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/udal.rm
- Sung by Vani Jayaram. Music by M.B.Srinivasan. Lyrics by Jayakanthan.
- Saravanan has written in detail on the song, the movie, the lyrics and on MBS here: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/15590.6859.02.29.28.html . As he writes, this song is a celebration of heart-rending sorrow, with lyrics of a kind rarely seen in films. One of the most expressive songs that VJ has sung, I like this one more than the oft-quoted 'mEgamE mEgamE'.
- Look at Jayakanthan's lyrics in this song. Simple, yet they don't seem to be constrained to fit the filmi format. The credit should go to MBS as well for turning the poem into such a powerful song.
- MBS has been discussed in detail in SOTD before, check out this collection: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/catlist.php?catid=5 . 'chiththirap poo sElai' from the same film has been featured in SOTD earlier.

bb -
It might just be that Saravanan had shared this song with us in the VJ thread.......and there were a few (usual suspects?) responses around that time.
It is a touching, moving and soul searing song. Sung with a great deal of poignancy and feeling.
That's enough to drive the populist hordes away - here and elsewhere :-)
I commend your choice! (

Ahmm..
A good one soulfully tuned by MBS and VJ takes the cake. But I find JK trying to slightly adjust to the Thirraipada padal ilakkanam drafted by PKS,KKD,Ku.Ma.Pa,Martha kasi and others.
Emphasis on Thuyaram ...pengaL reminds of you KKD's Oruthi Oruvanai ninaithuvittal though not the QA format.
megamE is in a different league altogether with a difference in the soul of the song, genere, music, lyric and content. My vote would still be for ämma unthan kai vaLai.

A good song. Never heard it before !
Reminded me of another song by its sense of pathos: "sonathu nI thAnA, sol, sol, en uvirE...".

Enjoyed reading the long write up on MB Srinivasan by Saravanan.
bb, i wish the link that you provided had Usha Uthup's "mango tree" song that had the interesting refrain "malligai pU" :). Another interesting song by Bhanumathi too ! I mean the one that has the refrain "Meet my son". Didn't know that both of them were composed by MB Srinivasan.

25 years of inikkum ninaivugaL - I
from ninaiththaalE inikkum
- Saravanan writes:
2004 marks 25 years of Premalaya’s ninaithaalE inikkum (released on 14th April 1979). The Telugu version Andhamaina Anubhavam was released on 19th April 1979. And the Hindi version Pyaara Tarana made its appearance belatedly in 1982 hoping to cash in on the popularity that Jayapradha and Kamal were enjoying in Hindi just then.
The astute KB thought it opportune to harness the cult following that Abba and Boney M enjoyed among the youth of the late 70s, and calculated that if he were to also throw in the exotic Singapore locales for good measure, the film ought to set the cash counters jingling. So he set about summoning writer Sujatha to put together a story of youthful romance, and sat with Kannadasan, (& Kannmani Subbu) and MSV to ensure that they came up with an immortal album.
Apart from the main actors, there were many miniscule, yet arresting characterizations: Geetha in the role of the receptionist hailing from Karaikkudi; Poornam Viswanathan the bet-loving father of Jayapradha (remember Toyota car versus sundu viral?); Jayasudha in the role of the elusive ‘anbarE’ tape sundari, Saratbabu as one among her many victims; SV Shekhar as the man who helps unscrambling the enigmatic message in the cassette--all unforgettable cameos. Mention must be made of Saritha too for her invisible presence throughout the film as Sona’s expressive voice.
Interesting characterizations, slick screenplay interspersed with moments of hilarity, the magnificence of Singapore, KB’s stylish narration aimed at the youth (‘iLaingnargaLukku samarppaNam’ the closing credits proclaimed), the winning combination of Kamal and Rajini, the breathtakingly beautiful Jayapradha, an awesome musical score—with all these spectacular ingredients, KB’s calculations went awry, for the story itself, the mainstay of all KB creations, was a major letdown. In a reminiscent vein years later, Sujatha would philosophize: ‘Ninaithale Inikkum' for Balachandar was the first script I wrote for a film. Before that, my stories had been filmed, but I had not played any role in writing the screenplay or dialogue. For 'Ninaithale Inikkum,' I had written a totally different kind of screenplay. Unfortunately, owing to constraints like star dates, Balachandar did not follow my script exactly. He made several changes and looked at the film as an opera on the lines of Abba. My original script was lively and if it had been faithfully followed, it would have been a model screenplay. Anyway, no regrets and I enjoyed working with Balachandar, his assistant Ananthu, Kamal and Rajni.’
Yet we recall this film today, and with gratitude, for the wonderful songs that MSV filled its frames with. The late 70s on the whole, were not very happy years for MSV and his glorious era seemed to be nearing its end, but with ninathaalE inikkum, he seemed to have reinvented himself, and silenced his detractors with a fabulous album comprising 14 songs in all, each one chiseled lovingly to absolute perfection. While he retained SPB as the only male voice (apart from singing a song of boisterous revelry himself), he used the 4 celebrated divas of tfm to sing for Sona. ‘idhu oru thEnisai mazhai’ screamed the hoardings, and a stupendous shower of magical music it sure was! Of course, there were occasional flashes of brilliance in his subsequent endeavors in the 80s, but ninaithaalE inikkum will forever be enshrined in the annals of tfm as the last tour de force album of the great Mellisai Mannar.

As Chandru is doodling (bright red lips, as usual, the insignia of his music group “Yours’ Lovingly”) listlessly on a piece of paper, his mother comes with a determined air and raises the topic that she’s raised in vain so many times before- Chandru’s marriage. Chandru, exasperated at her undaunted perseverance, reminds her that he’s not a bachelor, but a widower, and storms out.
We then see him driving along Cathedral Road and his glance falls on the Music Academy---his thoughts fly back to the day when their group staged a show in its hallowed precincts, for it all began on that momentous day--
* * * * *
Chandru appears on the stage, and introduces the rest of his troupe- Deepak, the guitarist whose twin obsessions are singing in MSV’s voice and small-time kleptomania; Visu, whose two fixations are ‘drums and dames’; and Kamalakar Rao alias Mama.
A pretty girl finds her way down the aisle and seats herself. But why does she have a furtive look? We are soon to find out. Meanwhile, the audience, who are all frenzied fans of ‘Yours Lovingly’ applaud and scream deliriously, and the magic begins--

Dodging his crazed fans adroitly, Chandru is seen entering his room in Hotel Chola, in preparation for their next show there. But he is surprised to see an unknown beautiful girl in his room (she is known to us, though- the same ‘furtive’ female!). He assumes she’s another wild fan, and she plays along, going so far as to express her longing to become a guitar in his hands--a panicky Chandru rushes out seeking his friends. But when he returns with them, she’s not there. And there’s a legend emblazoned on the cupboard door- ‘I Love You’ (with an ‘ea’ inside the O).
The troupe is leaving to Singapore on their first tour abroad. Chandru is stunned to see his fleeting nocturnal visitor seated in the lounge of the airport, also waiting for the same flight. But when he accosts her, she coolly rebuffs them. He is not to be put off, and with the help of the ever-resourceful Deepak, manages to get a seat next to her in the flight. She pretends not to know him and seems immersed in her book (Heinrich Boll, no less!) But his persistence pays off, and as his clumsy attempts at palmistry amuse her, she finally bursts into peals of laughter and exclaims ‘I like you’. He is quick to respond with ‘I love you!’--Romance is in the air--literally!

As the flight lands, Sona (for that is her name), disappears into the crowd, but not after Chandru manages to elicit her address. Chandru & friends look at the sights of Singapore with wonder, as they are taken to the Cockpit Hotel. Later Chandru and Deepak find that the address that Sona had given him belongs to a shop dealing in Chinese antiques! Chandru is dejected, and his frustration mounts as they happen to catch glimpses of Sona in a cable car, and later in a mall. He manages to talk to her in the mall, but she says she’s not Sona and rushes out.
The National Theater is packed to capacity, and their show is about to commence, when Chandru spies Sona, along with another man, seated amidst the audience. He sends a note to her asking her to come out, and goes to meet her. He remonstrates with her to give him her true address, but she seems reluctant--
Inside, the crowd gets restive. And Deepak, summoned to do some fire fighting, ignites the hall with an impromptu zestful performance, wherein he espouses his hedonistic philosophies in a delightfully irreverent song:
3. Sambo siva sambo:

Chandru manages to wrest out a promise from Sona to meet him the next day in Jurong Park. He sits expectantly on a picturesque bridge, and wonders if Sona would turn up for the rendezvous. The hours pass and presently--
4. What a waiting:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/whataw.rm
A fat man walking up the bridge shakes Chandru out of his reverie, and he realizes with disappointment that it was all a dream, and Sona had taken him for a ride again!
But when he returns to his hotel room, he finds Sona there! Tired of her antics, he speaks harshly to her, and tells her not to meet him again. Sona weeps, and pleads with him to give her some more time, and assures him that everything would fall in place soon. He believes her, and they snatch some idyllic hours together--we see them having fun in the skating rink, going up in the cable car, boating, praying devoutly in the Mariamman temple for this happiness to last---
5. Nizhal kandavan:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nizhalkan.rm
Meanwhile, Deepak too is beset with frustrations—a female fan sends him a tape in which she expresses her love for him, and challenges him to find her address. He goes crazy trying to get the address, for that part of the message seems to be scrambled. He guesses that the pretty receptionist in the hotel may be this ‘tape sundari’ and in the pretext of returning her chain which he had purloined earlier, he approaches her—she simpers and accepts that she was the elusive ‘tape sundari’—Deepak’s joy knows no bounds--
6. Namma ooru singari:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nammaooru.rm
As the joyous song ends, she pushes him from the roof, and Deepak wakes up with a startled scream—cha, it was all a dream; the real ‘tape sundari’ is still elusive!
