I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan, Great Work. Keep it up. Expecting more.
Naaz, it is very difficult to explain those things. But Tholkapiam clearly says about the pronounciation. If u get it, please read it.

Saravanan, good work.
BTW, for those who may have skipped it, "thaththichellum" in my website has everything except Sivaji's recitation.

Neel D-
Paadum Vande is inaccessible. My computer seems to freeze every time I try to download that particular file (the others are fine.) What gives?
Saravanan- Thank you for the Victoria Vairam confirmation.
GR - I have perused the Tholkapiam. The way I see it, the lisps, aspirations, diphthongs - and their "modern" Tamizh usage, is anything but uniform. I conclude that this is similar to the current (ab)use of English, part MTV, part ZTV, most EmptyV :-) As a linguist, I am particularly interested in the shifts in "language " and "parole" (the way it is "spoken" by the indigenous people.) But such an investigation can easily turn dry and technical.
Thanks for your input, however. I will excavate my old tamizh grammar texts and pore over them sometime in the coming weeks. It's time to get things right (for my own understanding, at the very least. :-))

Neel D -
One small (but significant) suggestion:
Would it be possible to have a "guest book" for visitors to your site? That way, those listeners who do not frequent TFM page, can post their comments/feedback to directly at the webpage. Please give it some thought.
Nenjamellam Neeye should have walked away with a host of awards and accolades. Award or no award, it still remains one of Vani's golden, unforgettable songs. "Margazhi Pookkal Ennai Theendum...Nerame Vaa..." The gentle restlessness and prolonging of time (waiting for the lover) is filtered in just that "spreading" of the word "Nerame...". Superb.

Vani Jeyaram has sung many songs about Tamil Eelam as well as film songs. Her voice is just as beautiful in Tamil Eelam songs as it is for film songs.

Adding one more suggestion alongwith Naaz's: Is it possible to mention the name of the music director (and if possible the co-singer for the non-Tamil songs) next to the song name in the song lists? This probably is more work in addition to the tons of effort that you are already putting in, but this might be useful especially for rare songs and songs from rarely-heard-about movies and also to people who are interested in collecting such details. Just a thought!

NeelD,
There is one more excellent solo by VJ in "Nenjamaellam neeyae". It goes "Naalai mudhal unakaagavae naan paduvaen en uyir kannanae". Could you also upload that when you get a chance?
Thanks

Neel D-
Have been wondering if "Enai Thaedum Maegam" from Kannodu Kann, and "Ragam Thalam Pallavi...Adhu Kadhal Bhoopalame" from Theerpugal Thiruthappadalam are also your cherished VJ-SPB duets as well? :-)
Priya -
"Naalai Mudhal Unakkagave..." is also a fine solo.
Another rare one is "Uyire, Uravae..." from the film Dhuram Adhigamillai. A S-G original too!

Yes Naaz. "Ragam Thalam Pallavi...Adhu Kadhal Bhoopalame" from Theerpugal Thiruthappadalam is a melodious one. There is also an excellent solo by JC in that movie "Oru uril oomai raja, avan rani mullil roja..." Though this movie had only a couple of songs, they were good. Was SG the MD in this movie?

BTW, was'nt there a duet by VJ and ? in Nenjamaellam neeyae. I cannot recollect exactly.

Yes, Priya, TT is an SG effort. I don't recall the duet from NN though. The solos raced ahead in that one.
The "uyirae urave" song I remember was from a Robert-Rajasekaran film. Either DA or Kalyanakalam. But the music was always by SG. Which meant, in most cases, at least a couple of songs by VJ.
Was "Thayyaki Vechcha En Thangame" (Rowdy Rakkamma) also an SG tune? Or was that MSV? One more of my favorite (original) by SG is the duet "Abishegam Alangaram Archanai Arambam" MVD-VJ from Marumagale Vazha

VJ is a good singer, but not a versatile one. Some of her dappankoothu songs under MDs like SG and CB are highly irritating and make you almost break the radio/tape.
She deserves the position she has in TFM

Yes Naaz. I used to like that song "Abishegam Alangaram Archanai Arambam". It is a fine duet by MVD and VJ. I remember seeing that movie as well Suhasini & Chandrashekar..
The movie "Lottery Ticket" also had 2 fine songs.
1) Kannil vandhai nenjil nindrai nee..(JC & VJ)
2) Avaniyai kondada vandhaal.(VJ)
NeelD, any chance of getting these rare songs!!!!!!(yeah..Yeah..I know we are asking for too much!!!!)

Hi Saravanan-great to know that you are a Gill adarsh alumni. I was there for 2 years (+2) and passed out in 1985.
one more haunting VJ solo-Agayathil thottil katti mangai-from thunive thunai-thou. the movie flopped big time, this particular song was very popular. Also i remember-Ala marathu kili-from attukkara alamelu was also a popular song played often in vivdh bharati.
In a way its interesting to note that VJ sang for heroines who did powerful challenging roles- like Lakshmi, Srividya, jayachitra, sripriya, vanisri. hence all her songs turned out be gambheeram.
Another song i remember from pattam puchi-starring kamal and jayachitra-pasi yedukkire neram vandhal ..

Yaaro -
Tappanguththu numbers, no matter who they are sung by, have an in-built annoyance factor in them. It is the noisy and percussive nature of that genre of composition. It would be nice to have a list of "soothing" Tappanguththu numbers. :-)
Still, if a visit to Neel D's VJ website does not prove her versatility to you, then nothing else will.
Balaji - VJ's singing voice definitely added a certain "authoritative dignity" to the actors you mentioned above. Also, in those days, there were many strong women-character driven (and author-backed) films, which is not the case today. The "girls" on today's velliththirai are merely eye-candy and usually do two gyrating numbers (wonder why the vamps vanished from the mid-80s? The heroines skirts and blouses got shorter - that's why!)
VJs voice also suited Radhika, Ambika, Radha, Revathi, Jayashree, Nalini, Seetha and Sumalatha (among others.)
Small detail: Alamaraththu Kili is from Palabishegam (not AA). VJ had no songs in that S-G opus, I don't think. All PS - TMS.

Priya - VJ had a song in Poikkaal Kudhirai as well. I am trying to think how that one flowed...any hints?

Priya, I have "Naalai mudhal unakkaagave". But I do not have the other songs you and Naaz have mentioned. If I find any of those I will upload them.
Kaumudi, The co-singers names should already appear in your player because they are embedded in the songfile. I know it is not fair to not list their names on the webpage but it is going to be a lot of typing and formatting. May be in the future.
Naaz, Guest Book sounds like a good idea. Let me think about it.
Balaji, "pasi edukkira neram" is PS with SPB.
Everyone,
sabdasvaram punnagaiyil, sarigamapadani and more. Added Page4 to Tamil Duets 2.

1974, continued--
8. Kannadi amma un Idhayam- Paadha Poojai- PS
Can anyone clarify who is the MD? Is it MSV?
VJ's first song with PS. It goes like this:
(PS starts off first and VJ follows)
Kannadi amma un idhayam,
en kanne, naan adhai paarthaal,
en mugham kaattum,
deiveega bandham nam uravu,
ennaalum theyaadha nilavu.
I love it when they go high in the line 'deiveega bandham nam uravu', and come down with 'ennalum theyaatha nilavu' and then a humming. Wonderful!
The film starred Sivakumar, Jayachitra and Kumari Padmini (or was it Jaya?). Anyway, the two are sisters.
Interestingly, in another thread on Bhim Singh, Subbu says this film was by Bhim Singh. Also, he says there are also solo versions of this song, by VJ (happy) for Jaya and PS (pathos) for Jayachitra.
9. Naan solla vandhen- Pudhiya Manithan- SPB
Again, who was the MD?
I vaguely remember seeing this film on TV- Jayashankar and Jayasudha, I think.
I have heard this song a couple of times on Ilangai vaanoli ages ago. I think it goes like: Naan solla vandhen nalamaana seithi--.
It was a nice duet by SPB-VJ.
10. Enakkenna manakavalai- Sorgathil thirumanam
Yet again, who was the MD? I think the song was picturised on Latha.
Enakkenna manakavalai
inippillai kasappum illai
ithu oru thuravu nilai
mazhayile nanaikiren
veyilil kaaigiren--
Has VJ speaking English in between- 'No mother, no father, we don't bother' and again'Where we begin, where we end, then and there, we have no friend'
VJ superbly brings out the frustrations and disappointments which the heroine has undergone and her'don't care' attitude at present.
11.Enna kutram seitheno- Dhikkatra Parvathi
I have not heard this song, only heard about it.
Also I have heard that music was by Veenai Chittibabu. Is it true? Can someone elucidate?
The film was based on a poignant story by Rajaji. Starred Lakshmi and Srikanth. Was the first tamil film of Singeetham Srinivasa Rao. Won some award too.
1974 to continue
