Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

bb:Good choice from Dandapani Desikar! It was not a lec-dem. It was a thukkadaa in a regular concert. He was head of the dept of music in Annamalai University. The teacher in him was probably in action in that concert!

took the entire day catching up after a long break from newtfmpage. office work be damned. (was away on a short trip to India - aren't India trips always short?:))
congrats bb on reaching 400. 500 & Warne are at sight, though Murali's final tally will take more time to beat.
as usual, the songs (that I missed) were exquisite. the ones I really enjoyed were kaadhalenum kovil, romba naalaaga, kaattukkule thiruvizha, ilam pani & the recent thumbam nergaiyil - to mention a few. I am hearing a lot of other songs for the 1st time. This page has got me introduced to countless new, rare songs & talents and I am very grateful for that. wonderful write-ups by Saravanan, vengayam, CV, Subbu & others.
bb - the SOTD archive page looks amazing. The SOTD Collections is a great idea. kudos.

Today's SOTD is a classic indeed. Brings back some memories as this was the first song I recall trying to sing on stage for a Bharathidaasan programme back in early school days with mixed results. The higher notes at "Iyambi kaatta maataaaaya" did me in :-) although I managed to save the rest of the song. Dhandapani desikar's effort clearly shows in the natural flow of the melody.

How about MMD's "ayye metha kadinam from nandhanar " as SOTD sometime in the future.

Desikar is enjoyable all the 14 min. It would be interesting to listen the same song from a hindustani singer (with his native dialect) .
I was listening to 'kannukklle minnal ondru konjam pArada' by Srinivas from 'Snehithiye'. I missed this for a long time and what a song it is! Excellent rendition by Srinivas and awesome interludes with Sarangi, Veena , Violins by VS.

bb that was a rare program indeed, the only one for Bharathidaasan that I can remember of, there used to be quite a few for Bharathi.
"Vennilaavum vaanum pole, veeranum koorvaaLum pole" was sung by another participant in that program and if you can get hold of that it would be a worthy SOTD as well. I think SK might have that song.

Song of the Day: udhaya kaalamE from panchami.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/udhayakaalame.rm
- This melodious number is sung by P.Suseela. Music by Ilayaraja. Lyrics by Vairamuthu. This movie was never released.
- This song is another gem from IR in the 70s. The song sounds so fresh even today, thanks to the youthful voice of PS.
- Panchami was a movie by Balu Mahendra that didn't come out. It has another song with excellent orchestration, "panik kaatrin" by S.Janaki. Does anyone have that song?

bb,
Good going with another rare song. If I remember right, "Panjami" had the SJ song "oru raagam kannil vandhu nenjil nindru moadhum" which was later rereleased with different lyrics as "unnaiththaanae thanjamendru nambi vandhaen maanae" for "Nallavanukku Nallavan". I knew a guy who had access to IR's studio recordings in those days. Sadly some SOB stole those precious tapes I had from unreleased IR movies like this.

One of the most beautiful songs of all time for me! Radio Srilanka used to play it early to mid 80s at about 5:45 a.m. in the Kalai Thendral or some 15 min "dawn songs" programme! Almost daily, the other was Ponnaaram Poovaram!
Dramatic prelude, second interlude and a charanam seen given to SPS mostly in songs like Aasaye Kathula; O Malai Aruvi, in some ways the begiining of charanams of Pooncholai Pennin.., Solai Kuyile. This song, has that charanam with the sweetest turnaround and not heard from any other composer in my entire entire life ever ever!!!!!
For any introduction to the everlasting total and mind-boggling genius of IR, this is that one song.

In a chapter titled ‘ urangi kidakkum mottukkaL’, Vairamuthu writes in his ‘en jannalin vazhiyE’ about his songs written for films that were never released. After lamenting the stillborn fate of ‘ thaLirgaLil pookkaL thangaL mugam pArkkum vasantha kAlam’ sung by KJY in IR’s music for Balumahendra’s film Kadarkkarai dhAgam and ‘oru muththu kudam saththamidum’ sung by SJ in Malaysia Vasudevan’s music for T.K.Bose’s film Janaki, Vairamuthu writes about ‘udhaya kAlamE’:

Captivating song, heavenly interludes, sung delightfully by PS.
In fact all songs of Panchami are amazing illustrations of the genius of IR. ‘Panikkatrin kuLumai, padham pAdum arumai, paruva nenjai vAttum, sugamO sugangaL, iLamai, inimai, pudhumai’ where SJ weaves a wondrous warp on IR’s psychedelic canvas, the complex classical ‘mAraghi mAdham mun pani veLaiyilE’, (where I suspect the male voice that tantalizes in tandem with SJ to be TV Gopalakrishnan), and MV’s jaunty ‘mAlai veyil pAdum sindhu sindhu’ are all songs that deserve to be relished at solitary leisure.
