Subject: comments on Radhika (Ilampani fame)
Thank you so much.
This is about the great song posted in SOTD, ILAMPANI THULI VIZHUM NERAM.(I think it should be this and not THULIR VIDUM neram) This was for the movie Aaradhanai. Radhika was a singer who just sang this song for TFM. She was a student of Ethiraj or SMC (I am not sure on this) and a friend of Suhasini. She won the best singer award of her college. When I was a kid, Suhasini gave a sirappu thenkinnam (Hmm...those were the days) and she mentioned this. Great song no doubt about it.
When there were no forums like this I used to beg each and every Cassette shop owner in Chennai, "Unga kitta Aaradhanai pada cassette irukka" ; Prompt will come the reply "Irukke" and will give me the "Aaradhana" cassete - the Hindi film of Rajesh Kanna. Finally my frustration and pain ended in a remote shop in Nanganallur.I got the song. I told the cassete shop guy just to record this song in a cassete. He was so baffled. "Indha pattaiya? Indha pattai ketkra mudhal aal neenga dhan sir" was his reply. I didnt care. For I recorded this song for a little over 20 bucks.
However I am happy the film bombed. The picturisation of this song is pathetic. The story line is Suman and Sumalatha are lovers. Nizhalgal Ravi is the villain. He is crazy about Sumalatha. So he kills suman and cunningly marries Sumalatha. Suman comes as a ghost to haunt (us and) them. Finally sumalatha also dies and Suman and sumalatha join after death as ghosts.
Thanks
Arun

Song of the Day: vignaanaththai vaLakkap pOrEndi from nalla thambi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/vignaanaththai.rm
- My favorite NSK song for the weekend. Sung by N.S.Krishnan and T.A.Madhuram. Music by C.R.Subbaraman.
The lyrics for the song is astounding, funny and profound at the same time. NSK was a visionary. He could imagine and look forward to many developments, most of which we've realized in the past 50 years or so after he sang this song. One of the first actors to align himself with the teachings of Periyaar, he tried to impart his 'paguththarivu' thinking through his songs. In this song where he wants to foster science, he says:
vignaanaththai vaLarkkap pOrEndi
thEnaandaaLai virundhuk kazhaichchuk kaattap pOrEndi
...
ponjaathi purushan illaama
puLLaiyum kuttiyum porakkuraappule (vignaanaththai)
He goes on:
agnaanaththai azhikkap pOrEndi
aNu sakthiyaale aayuL viruththi paNNap pOrEndi
(aduththa naattuk kaaran pOla
aaLaik kollaama, oorai paazhu paNNaama)
How did he know about Pakistan's nuclear designs? :)
adhu mattumaa?
punjai nelaththu paruththi chediyil
podavai ravikkai vEtti kaaikka
...
kai thiramaiyai kaattap pOrEndi
oru kaviyaip paadi
kaaththum mazhaiyum thaakkap pOrEndi
T.A.Mathuram asks what he will do for the household. He asks her what she would like to see. TAM comes out with her laundry list of wishes:
nellu kuththa maavaRaikka neer eraikka machinu
allum pagalum arisi araikka adhukkoru machinu
...
oNNai marandhuttEn
button-ai thatti vittaa rendu thattile
ittiliyum kaappi namma pakkaththil vandhidaNum
kattilukku mElE fan kaaththai suththONum
kaalam kaattum karuviyum vENum
NSK cannot stop his laughter now. He responds, pointing out that these facilities don't really belong to our lifestyle.
adi paiththiyam!
namma naattile
veettu vElai senja pomma naattiyaip paaru
mEnaattu naagareegam koNda mEniyaip paaru
ava kaattukkup pOvaa
kaLai eduppaa
kaariyam paappa
kanji kudippaa!
iva car-lle pOvaa
ooraich chuththuvaa
kaNNaadi paappaa
kaappi kudippaa!!
What a succint way to bring out the difference between the two lifestyles! A great end to a great song.
- Nalla thambi was NSK's own film. The film was directed by Krishnan-Panju. The story and dialogues were by Anna.
- From an article in Dinakaran on NSK:
As far as Kalaivaanar N.S.Krishnan was concerned, he, by nature, didn't like power and powerful posts. He has shown this in his films.
In the film "Nalla Thambi" the dignified position of Zameen is thrust upon him. But he doesn't like it. While the Zameen officers are in search of him he hids himself so that not to be traced out by the officers!
One day an officer belonging to the Zameen comes back from his outstation tour. He waits there to avail the service of a cooli to carry his luggage. When Kalaivaanar happens to come there the officer, without knowing who he is, engages him as his cooli. Carrying the luggage Kalaivaanar reaches the Zameen palace. Now others identify Kalaivaanar and he is welcomed into the palace. The officer comes to know the truth and the next day he waits for Kalaivaanar to apologise to him. Now Kalaivaanar comes in front of the officer carrying a luggage on his head. The officer gets nervous and apologises before him. Kalaivaanar teaches him a lesson saying that it's not wrong that himself was carrying the officer's luggage on the previous day, but rather it's not proper on the part of the officer to engage a cooli to carry even such a small luggage which the officer himself might have very easily carried!

bb: Great song! It reminded me of my recent trip to Madras. I was talking to everyone I met in Tamil. The replies came in English! NSK could not have foreseen what else would come with vignanam!
One correction: It is 'mEnAttArai virundhukkazhaithu kAtta pOrEndi' - he was going to show the westerner what he could accomplish'
SP asked for this song in pp!

Raj/SP, I thought 'thEnaandaaL' is some local belle who comes in the story, who is westernized and looks down on NSK and TAM :))

Song of the Day: thunbam nErgaiyil from .
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thunbammmdd.rm
- "Thunbam nErgaiyil yaazh eduththu nee inbam sErkka maattaayaa" is a classic song, that came in the movie 'Or Iravu'. That song was featured in SOTD earlier: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/149.html
Today's SOTD is the same song, but sung by M.M.Dhandapani Desikar. Dhandapani Desikar is the composer of this song (written by Bharathidasan). This clip is probably from a lec-dem by Desikar. He explains beautifully how he composed the song. If you are not interested in listening to Desikar's desh alapana, fast forward to about the 6 min mark.
Desikar says that he spent 2 years in composing this song. He says,
"anbargaLE, idhu Bharathidasan paattu idhu. indhap paattukku varna mettu pOdarathukku 2 varusham sindhanai paNNinEn.
Ennaa, oru thagappan anbOdu kozhandhaiyaik koopttu thunbam nErgaiyil yaazh eduththu nee inbam sErkka maattaayaa-nnu irukkaNum. adhukku desh ondi thaan poruththamaa irukkum".
He elaborates his point by singing in atana, to prove how unsuitable that raagam will be for this song ("kozhandhai OdiyE pOyidum"). Desikar's main point is that the raagam should do justification to the meaning of the song. poruL aRinjaa thaan isai amaikka mudiyum!
