I was just listening (a number of times..) to a song from the movie "Vanangamudi" a Sivaji/Savithri starrer. I have seen that movie myself a long time back. The song is "Raja Yogame", a very rare compostion by the legendary GR (whom I like all these years) and a legendary voice no other than our PS (who else could have). We should be proud of ourselves for having such an institution in our midst. (compare her to Maria Callas). It seemed very ambient to me to listen to such a great voice, we all are blessed to hear over the last 50 years or so. I suggest that someone go back and dissect that song again. What a lyric/compostion and a voice?. They have converged to form an oasis of listening pleasure. Am I biased towards PS...damn right I am..........I dont hesitate to say that....She is the best mezzo soprano we have ever had in playback singing. Also listen to "Mannulegellam" from UP by GR. Not that I dont like Jikki from Mandiri kumari or Chellapillai ( referring to Ulavum Thendral...and Vadana En Raaja).....superb rendition........but one should admit that PS is far beyond that...PS's technorythmic voice surpasses all boundaries. Well some people might argue that there are singers who are more versatile than PS......I respectfully disagree....There's been a lot of noise that IR had treated PS in a different way and gave her mediocre songs. I have been listening IR since his debut movie. I dont see any merits to those arguments either. PS had mentioned in her latest interview that Maestro IR had treated her with dignity and respect..I now know...why.......Though she had collaborated with him in tamil for over 200 songs, she had sung for him more in his telugu ventures all along.

Since this topic encourages admirers of all great singers of the early years of playback singing to contribute, I am forced to write another piece, which, I think bolsters my claim of PS being a great mezzo all these years. There are two songs enlisted below:
1. Udhaya Kalamae/Panjami/PS/IR
2. Anbil Malarntha/Kanavanae Kan Kanda Theivam/PS/Addapalli Rama Rao & Hemanth Kumar.
I found first song in www.muthamil.com, this evening and the second one was posted by SK, pursuant to my request. He always seems quick in his turnaround time. Well...I appreciate him for that. He has always satisfied my requests not once..but..many times.
One should realize that both these songs are from different time periods, one early fifties and the other early eighties. PS emerged as a mezzo from KKK (Kanavanae Kan Kanda Thevam, a Gemini Ganesan/Anjali Devi/MN Nambiar as the bad guy and was produced by Narayanan and Co, was also involved in Pakshiraaja Studios to team with SM Sriramulu Naidu which also produced the movie "Malai Kallan" starring MGR/PBanumathi and TS Dorairaj. One could also see MGR's elder brother MG Chakrapani in the investigative role).
If you can get hold of a DVD or Video of KKK (1954/55), please enjoy it, especially who cherishes the oldies like Pathala Bhairavi and Marma Yogi.
Reflecting back on my piece again, the song by PS is so fresh, haunting, captivating, no wonder it was an instant hit. She had already sung in a another AVM movie for R Sudarsanam (telugu dubbed) "Sangham" in tamil "Penn" with PS Bhagwathi before KKK, if my conclusions are right.
A Rama Rao/ Hemanth Kumar gave us some of the mesmerising tunes after GR's Mandiri Kumari in 1950. To fans who had been listening to Jikki/TV Ratnam/MLV/PLeela/AP Komala/Rani, PS's voice breathed fresh air into the playback system. Not that these singers are anyway inferior to PS, but, one could admit after listening to PS..it made everyone spellbound. The voice was very inviting and soul stirring, especially the song I am referring to. The voice so raw, beautiful, young and soothing in its texture .....Can someone replicate that voice today..very doubtful. Listen to it and you feel PS's voice just dominating the time frame....Why did AR/HK choose a new comer/unknown voice for the song....its still a mystery when equally gifted artists such as mentioned above. May be they had a clue what was coming ahead or one should go into their brains as to what they thought of the young singer in those days. Still..could'nt find an answer. Rest is history.....
"Udaya Kalamae" (after 30 years) came in the eighties as she was concentrating more on Telugu (there was a hit movie by NTR/Sujata..forgive me..I dont remember the name), but still, one could feel the same raw, soothing and emotional rendering by her for IR. Did IR choose her becoz, SJ or others were not available, I guess not.....and I doubt it. Think he might have felt that no other than PS could do justice to her legendary status. The complex percussion/ the opening prelude and interludes coupled with her unique voice was more than enough to keep the song sailing....all through.
Both the songs were from different time periods as I mentioned the former (Panjami) enriched by technological advances in acoustics but, still...PS was raw/real and her silky voice intact.

It been a while that I brought to the attention of this forum, a recollection from my memory of some old nostalgic songs which I now share with this forum. Two of them was sung by my own favorite Balasaraswathi. She teamed up with TA Mothi in both of them. One was " Malai Nila Vara Vendum ..Vanna Marutham Veesida Vendum..Ialam Jodi Kuyil Inbamai Koova Vendum". A silky, meloncholic, mesmerising song to be listened in late evening. The way TA Mothi lends his voice at the end of the song is just amazing and beyond one's crude imagination. Though her repertoire in Tamil was short-lived, needless to confirm, she did contribute to some of the most memorable songs that I have known. The second song is titled "Kandukonden Naane...Kadal Enna Vendru Thane". Looks like TA Mothi was swept away in the tidal waves of male palyaback singers who would dominate TFM including TMSounderajan, AMRaja, PB Sreenivos in late 50s and the 60s. Let us pause a to know this little known singer...He did really have blast with PBhanumathi, the song from the 1949 Gemini movie "Aboorva Sagotharargal" titled "Aaha Aaduvome..." and in the movie "Sabash Meena" (TG Lingappa) (correct me if I am wrong). Unfortunately I am uanble to recollect the composer/movie of both the songs that I mentioned. Can SK/Manisegaran/a.a help me......

"Kandukonden Naane" resembles another song from Naushad Ali's movie "Babul" sung by Talat Mehmood "Husnwalon ko na Dil...Dohe Mitta De....""well written by Shakeel Badayuni, although it was devoid of a female soprano. I had always that that TA Mothi and Talat had similar singing style.

Vicky,
I am not 100% certain, but I think `Malai Nila Vara Vendum' is from the movie "Thai Ullam".

a.a: I think so too...but not sure as you said. If it is from "ThaiUllam" (MVRajamma/RS Manohar), then then composers are Chitoor Nagaiah/ A.RamaRao. What about the other one....

"kandukonden naane" is from the movie "Kannin Manigal" It is a movie about a hero without eyesight. Heroine is Lalitha. Some minor hero. This movie has another good song "Nalla veenai seithey, adhai nalam keda erivaayo.." by same Balasaraswathi

Kathiresan: Thanks for your info. "Kanin Manigal" was released in 1956. The movie had another solo by ML Vasanathakumari. Composer SV Venkatraman? I am trying to find out...

I saw this thread just now- I am really happy that there are so many fans of TA Mothi and Ravvu Balasaraswathi.
Vicky, you have already got the correct answers for both your queries:
Maalai nila vara vendum, mandhamarudham veesida vendum is from Thayullam (1952) and Kandu konden naane is from Kannin Manigal (1956).
Kannin Manigal's MD was SVV.
Kathiresan, are you sure that 'Nalla veenai seithey' is by Balasaraswathi? I seem to remember that it was by MLV. Another song by MLV in the same film- Kannathil muthamittal.
