Mrogindi veena is one of my all time favourites of PS. I first heard that song on TV many years ago when she was performing that song on stage. Boy, isn't this song just amazing - atleast to me it is. As you mentioned effortless singing combined with subtle expression make this song special.
I particularly like the long-drawn veeeeeeeena, it feels really nice. Thanks for bringing up my long time favourite.
And let me also share with you guys another favourite song of mine sung by PS and KJY. It is called Momuna bottetti from Kumkuma thilakam. I simply adore this song. It was composed by Satyam although it sounds like an IR composition. Listen to PS in this song - her voice is plain awesome. Here is the link: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/XY00000A0K

Kaumudi -
Thank you for posting the link to the duet from Kumkuma Thilakam. It is a lovely, hummable duet by PS and KJY. Quite catchy, even if one does not speak the language. With my negligible grasp (???) of telugu, I wonder (hesitantly) if the song is describing an imminent
"doll's marriage" (the hero and heroine referring to themselves as in a marriage play?) There are many references to shringaar "bottetti" and there is a elemental "shower" moment involving the earth and sky (another marriage?) and a general sense of an happy, long-lasting "lagnam"/ union.

Does anyone recall "Oruvan Kaadalan Oruthi Kaadali" from Vennira Aadai. The modulations and expression of PS have to be heard to be believed!!
A less often heard but a memorable song.

Songs from the movie "Manapandhal" starring Saroja Devi/SSR composed by the duo VR created a natural foam of haunting molodies coupled with poetic lyrics of Kannadasan describing a deep and devoted love.
One such melody that fascinated me all through my early years was " Unakku Mattum Unakku Mattum..Ragasiyamn Solven..Antha Ragasiyathai Oravarukkum Solli Vidathe". A song that was born out of fertile and creative colloboration of musical genius of VR and Smt. P. Susheela during TFM's rennaisance period.
Assemble PS & VR, the resulting product is one of unique style that combines sophisticated compositions, lyrics, heavenly voice and arrangements with roots music and tradition. The mentioned song details almost the buddha-like characteristics of a person who earns the character's (singer's) love.
I am always convinced that composers very much lean upon ther own cultural/musical nomenclature, but, liberally borrowing from the heritage of spanish, portugese, gypsy, french, italian and russian influences.
The song resembles in some sense (folkloric) like a classic colombian melody "Bunde Tollimense" that was composed by Albert Castillo in 1914. PS had many a break-points under VR's magical wand, but, this song had an urgency and a purpose as well. Looks like they might have gone to the drawing boards like the soul singers.
This is about someone's jubilation of love. Around that was built such a sophistication, the percussion, and the harmonic equilibrium with all the pieces of PS's vocalise perfectly interlocking with the song sequence.
How does one do that song after song after song........Well PS might have pushed for greatness each time and that was her state of mind. You could see the music and PS's voice weaving so smoothly without a sign of fragmentation. The duo and PS kept coming up with a winner.
You want to listen to this song over and over again. That's consistency. Its a mystical journey, an incredible ride that draws you in with every pulse (like the prelude from 'Papa was a Rollin Stone"). PS's legacy is hard to fill and her molodies dont fade and feel dated.
There's no heaviness; she lets the gloom and joy speak for itself. Rather, she keeps her tonal textures light and supple, poetic flow exciting, and goes for broke at the climaxes, yet, they weave into each other with purposeful continuity.
Her transitions from one passge to another are seamless (like Sergei Rachmaninoff's "song for voice and piano"-Vocalise).
Starting with a sometimes brooding landscape at a leisurely glide, she settles easily into one of the most beautiful melodies ever penned providing the perfect denouement. The orchestral balance is perfect, moving underneath a sheet of oceanic ambience as if she herself controlled it with her voice
This is a top-notch performance. Hope everyone agrees with that.

Yeah, you are right around there in the general area with your interpretation. It is a very happy, upbeat song. There are some songs which I listen just for PS - this is one of them.

There is yet another "trace" version of Rapadi Padunna - in Hindi!
I haven't the faintest idea if this song is available on the net, but if it is, you might want to check it out:
It is a Lata Mangeshkar solo, that goes:
"Sunsan Raaton Mein Jab Thu Nahin Aatha..." from the film Sannaata. The music was either by Usha Khanna or Bhappi Lahiri, I am not sure.

Vicky!
very nice writing on the song "unakku mattum". The sad version is bit slow and it goes like this
"mAlayittu idhayithile maNamudithEnE
manaivi ennum ninaivudane vAzhnthirunthEne
kaN mayangum vArthai solli paranthu vittArE....."
every word is very clear with right expression.
Your writings are real treat for us. I have copied all your postings and read now and then. U can share more with us whenever u find time.

humming for 'Ennai Eduthu Thannai Koduthu' is indeed given by MSV. In the 'Legends VR' (CD 5 of 5), MSV mentions this.

Hi,
Regarding vicky's choice of unakku mattum unukku mattum rahasiyam solven from 'Manappandal', it's a fine song, but i would like you people to listen to another song also picturised on sarojadevi going like this: 'Ore Raagam, Ore Taalam, Ore Paadal paadudamma'PS is at her sweetest in this song. And the BGM is too good. One of my favourite songs of PS, Unfortunately I don't have this song with me though I have 'Unakku Mattum' and the PBS song 'Udallukku Uyir Kaaval', another superb piece. I wonder whether HMV have come out with a cassette of this film. there's a PS-PBS duet too which is a great piece.

Yesterday I listened a lovely duet by AMR-PS, "sElAdum neerodai meethe, thEn sintha pann pAduvome" from the movie "alaudeenum Arputha vilakkum", released in 1957. I have a tel. CD of AMR with the same tel. version, its also equally good. Any other details about this song?

Hi Kalai,
Yes, this is a fantasic song which I have listened on Radio Ceylon. How do I access this rarely heard duet? Any idea? Would be grateful. also try and listen to this song by TMS-P Leela
"Vaazhkai Odam. Odam Vendum, Senru Karai Sera Vendum". It's anther spell-binding song rarely heard these days. I had taped it from radio several years ago and I retain the recording as I know I cannot hear it otherwise. Don't exactly know from which movie it's from. Feel the MD must be GRaamanathan.

Kalai,
‘Selaadaaum neerodai meedhae’ is a remarkable song, composed by veteran S Rajeswara Rao. Listening to the song is like going on a magic journey, first by bullock cart, then by car, and zooming up in a space shuttle, and then completing the last lap again in the good old bullock cart- the song proceeds in such amazingly different velocities in different parts- sometimes it seems like it is another song altogether, but the genius of Rajeswara Rao ensures that it remains an inseparable unified whole—
PS starts off gently with ‘Selaadum neerodai meedhae, then sindha pann paaduvomae, kannodu kannum, pesaamal pesum, kanirasame suvai amudhae kaanbom ingae’, to which AM Raja, equally tender, replies with ‘Selaadum neerodai meedhae, then sindha pann paadum maadhae, meenodu meenum, pesaamal pesum, vizhi mozhiyae kanirasame kaanbaai ingae’. In the charanam, PS touches a high note with ‘aadharam neeyae kannalanae’- then the transition to the next tempo with ‘Kalaignanamae, azhagu kaviyamae, kavivanarum mayangum oviyamae’ and proceeds to the next bit ‘Malai meedhae pani maadhae’, and finally the entrancing piano leads the way back to the slow ‘Selaadum neerodai meedhae’.
Jayasakthi Pictures’ Alavudeenum Arputhavilakkum-1957, stg. Nageswara Rao, was produced by ML Pathi, along with—TS Baliah! Another popular song was one in which women of different parts of the world are being auctioned, (Thillolam thillolam elam thaan vaarunga, elakkadaiyilae maadhu thaanunga) and the women themselves invite prospective buyers! (the Spanish girl sings ‘Spainin ezhil rani, varna chudar meni, La palmo ho, La paloma ho, the Chinese one sings ‘Ching ching China en dhesam’ , the Egyptian girl sings ‘’Neela nadhi kumariyum naanae, Pyramidin saayalum naanae’!!)- the song was sung by Hussain, Nithyakala, CN Rajalakshmi, PK Saraswathi and chorus.
