"Ennai Eduthu Thannai Koduthu..Ponavan Ponandi" from the movie "Padagotti", this is absolutely one of my favorites, from the time I heard the original track pyramiding Smt. Susheela's voice. That intro is something. I would call it her signature piece. She showed us what we expected of her, dramatizing the florid passages in that divine voice of hers or simply gave it her personal touch. The subtle rhythm and sophisticated tonal controls delivered an musical ambience in an unusual way. It is a puritan classic.
Her voice is huge and gigantic but with amazing flexibility supported by exquisite VR's musical patterns. It is a force of nature capable of performing the most mind-boggling like coloratura (should I admit on par with Joan Sutherland's rendition of Vincenzo Bellini's "Norma" or "Son vergin vezzosa" from "I Puritani"). Only Susheela's voice and her very secure technique can sing very demanding piece.
She meets the high note requirements easily and seems extremely aggressive. Here, the diva shakes off all here jealous critics that she is the only real dramatic mezzo soprano out there and set the standard for a masterpiece.
To ask for more expressive power would be missing the point; that is not what this rendition is about. It is perfectly chosen to display the best qualities of Susheela's voice at its peak.
She sang in very high tessituras (an operatic term) and managed to make every word comprehensible (unlike the current crop). It was spectacular in their regularity and precision and had very accurate pitch but at the same time more poignant. Smt. Susheela makes the listener aware that she is aware of every word she sings and every one of them brims with dramatic meaning at strident high notes (seems to me she has Montesarrat Caballe's platinum overtones at some finishing edges).
The orchestra of VR is competent (likened it to Dvorak's arrangement for Largo) against the background of Susheela's serene expressiveness and warm acoustics as she redeems the song. She gave us the real thing.

Vicky -
Thanks for the nice write-up on the song. Welcome again!
Does anyone here have a file or link to the song by PS and ? which goes (I only vaguely recall) Valaiosaiyum Kaivalaiosaiyum?? from the film Andha Raththirikku Saatchi Illai (MD: KVM)
If you do, please post it here. Thanks.

Vicky- That was wonderful! That song richly deserves all those accolades and more.
Naaz- 'Maniyosaiyum kai valaiyosaiyum' is a lovely SPB-SJ duet, yes from Andha Raathirikku Saatchi Illai. The SPB-PS duet from the film goes-'Sumaithaangiye indru'- a memorable pathos filled number.

Saravanan -
Thanks for jogging my memory. I remember the Sumaithangiye Indru song. Maniosaiyum is a good duet, but I have not heard it since the film's release. The first (garbled) line came to me this morning...but I still can't recall the tune. I hope somebody posts a link to this song in one of the SJ threads.

The paniththirai song is:
varuga varugavendru solli azhaippaar
silar vaasal vazhiyil nindru panneer theLippaar
that nicely describes the happenings in a wedding.
The neer kumizhi song starts as
kanni nadhiyOram
Nagesh and Jeyanthi do a stage dance in this song.

Vicky, SL, raja m and others:
Thanks for talking about 'ennai eduththu thannaik koduththu'.. great lyrics, excellent singing by PS, the fantastic effects that are aptly produced using only a couple of musical instruments and the unobtrusive chorus voice plus the male humming (conveying the musical sounds of distant fishermen in the sea).. VR at their best! A truly marvellous song that beautifully conveys the feelings of a young girl in love who misses her beloved lover!
- From: sk (@ 137.132.3.8)
on: Tue Jun 24 22:54:08 EDT 2003
Anyone knows who did the male humming in the song? It doesn't sound like MSV, for sure.

sk: Other instances of great humming: Ponaal Pogattum Poda, Thaazhaiyaam Poo Mudichu. I thought all of them (incl. Ennaiyeduthu) were by MSV. But I am not sure.

Thanks Vicky! Really happy to see many people after a long time. Ur writing brought everyone back to this forum. keep writing ..
I remember read an article by "mr.Aranthai narayanan" in vannathirai in early '80's comparing the old and new songs. There was a cartoon, like, one girl singing "Ennai eduthu thannai koduthu" and the other side was a youth with "OrampO OrampO" song. He took "ennai eduthu" song as the reference and specially praised the song.
I almost get the same feel when I listen "Velli nila vAnathile vanthu pOghuthadA" song. Anyone can feel the pain of love in "Ullathilum kAdhal nila vanthu nintrathadA, antha Oorvalathin suvadu mattum marayavillaydA", and PS proved she is the right choice for that song.

Thanks SK for the clarification
I heard in 0li 96.8 a Very nice song..
I guess MSV gave the humming for Ennai eduthu..

PS fans - please listen (once again :-) to Odivadhu pol from Idhayathil Nee (duet with PBS), this is available at dhool.com - her voice just flows, especially the way she sings ....mey... so many subtle changes .Delicate strings, accordian touches, guitar (spanish?) - one just wonders how far MSV & TKR would have gone had they been recognised (in their prime)outside TFM.

A few months ago I started to hear this telugu no. by PS which is the telugu version of "ThEn SindhudhE Vaanam" which goes like "MrOgindhi VeeNaa".
I said I started to hear this song because I haven't yet stopped listening to it. There's this friend of mine who just about started to hear this song and keeps on playing it again and again and again in the car to the frustation of the others!
No gimmicks, no great effort of expression (obviously, I am drawing comparison to the hitherto my favorite tamil version), just mere plain singing - all the same conveying the feeling that she is in that situation herself - lifts this song to great heights!
My hallos to everybody and my special "hi- long-time-no-see" to Sriram...SL.
BTW, naan eppadi indha thread-ai marandhEn???
