ASIANET programme – P.Susheela – 5/Jun/2003
First-of-all, my thanks to Kalai for his offer to enjoy the programme with his Malayalam-Tamzh translation and of course with tasty Chappathi, Sabji and Thayir saadham :-O
As usual, the programme started with the clippings on PS singing few lines of the songs “Binduuuuu”, “Malarey malarey theriyadhO”, “Poon thenaruvi”, “Raja shilpi”, “Omana thingaL patchi”.
Interviewer G.VeNugopal did help PS when she was stuggling with her 5-5-90 (%) usage of Malayalam-English-Tamil words during the interview :-)
PS sang the Christian devotional song “AakaashangaLil irikkum” effortlessly. The word “Aamen” repeated 3 times at the end of every CharaNam, with a reduction of scale everytime. PS with her maturity did very well in that. As Kalai explained and as I understood, this song has been a teaching of Jesus to HIS followers on “how to worship or pray”. The original words in English (Luke 11.2-4 under “teaching about prayer”) starts with “Our Father is heaven, May your holy name be honoured”.
GV asked her about the pattern of songs that would be liked very much in “medai katcheri’s”. PS did quote a few incl., “Paattu paadi”. Then, on “the type of songs PS sang", she said in those days many songs were based on popular hindi tunes. Example: Hemanth kumar’s songs. One may accept this fact or not, but this was what PS answered. Then, 2 lines of that Vikkal song was sung by her “unnai kaN theydudhey”. She said it is “drunkurd song” and ended with that great vikkal with a laugh :-)
A troop singer sang the song (very well rendered) “Shravana chandriga poo choodichu”, a great composition by G Devarajan+Vayalaar+PS.
GV enquired about her singing for the teen-age actresses of 50’s, 60’s... Few lines of one such fast beat song was sung by PS “Kaatru vannu kaLLanai pole”, of course with the help of GV giving her the words :-)
Another troop singer sang the famous “Udaya giri chuvannu”.
Next was about her co-singer SJ.. PS replied that SJ came first into Malayalam film music but GV corrected her saying “You (PS) only came first madam, then followed by SJ”. PS was just saying “OhO” for his correction :-O Something more interesting… PS said “SJ is a nice girl” hahahahahahaha… thaanga mudiyalai sirippu. Poor PS not comfortable in choosing the appropriate word J. PS praised that SJ does mimicry too in her songs by singing for a child, old lady, boy too :-)
GV enquired about PS’ family. PS with high gratitude said that her father was all-in-all for her. He, a veena player, taught her “sa ri ga ma pa” and mentored her in all respects.
The programme ended with a young singer singing “PaLLi aramaNa veLLi aramaNayil”.
Ending clips were showing PS with her pretty grand children :-)

Subbu
Thanks for the write-up. I thought PS was talking all along in Malayalam until you brought up the percentages! Having base in Madras probably made it difficult for her to learn Kannada and Malayalam.

I think it is not Sindhu, but siNdu (kudumi).
Posts such as the one from Sindu are nothing but reactions to what we write about others elsewhere.

this is about the clarification on the malayalam song "kaala chakaram"..
As Subbu and kaumudi said, it was a old song recorded in 1973."MusicIndiaOnline" given the wrong info. I have got a CD with the song mentioned the year as 1973. I dont know the same is there in the new "kaala chakram" also.

Let us start discussing about her songs between from beginning..
Yesterday in one of her old interview she told that she came to madras to learn "vidhwan" course. she has given some programmes in radio like "paapa malar". Director Prakash rao was looking for new singers and mr.ragavarao (from radio station) send four singers to MD. PS was selected after voice test. As we discussed earlier her first song is "yedukku azhaithai yedhukku" from "Petra thai" or the equivalent tel. song "enthuku pilichavendhukku" from kannathalli.

"Ennai Eduthu Thannai Koduthu..Ponavan Ponandi" from the movie "Padagotti", this is absolutely one of my favorites, from the time That intro is something. I heard the original track pyramiding Smt. Susheela's voice. I would call it her signature piece. She showed us what we expected of her, dramatizing the florid passages in that divine voice of hers or simply gave it her personal touch. The subtle rhythm and sophisticated tonal controls delivered an musical ambience in an unusual way. It is a puritan classic.
Her voice is huge and gigantic but with amazing flexibility supported by exquisite VR's musical patterns. It is a force of nature capable of performing the most mind-boggling like coloratura (should I admit on par with Joan Sutherland's rendition of Vincenzo Bellini's "Norma" or "Son vergin vezzosa" from "I Puritani"). Only Susheela's voice and her very secure technique can sing very demanding piece.
She meets the high note requirements easily and seems extremely aggressive. Here, the diva shakes off all here jealous critics that she is the only real dramatic mezzo soprano out there and set the standard for a masterpiece.
To ask for more expressive power would be missing the point; that is not what this rendition is about. It is perfectly chosen to display the best qualities of Susheela's voice at its peak.
She sang in very high tessituras (an operatic term) and managed to make every word comprehensible (unlike the current crop). It was spectacular in their regularity and precision and had very accurate pitch but at the same time more poignant. Smt. Susheela makes the listener aware that she is aware of every word she sings and every one of them brims with dramatic meaning at strident high notes (seems to me she has Montesarrat Caballe's platinum overtones at some finishing edges).
The orchestra of VR is competent (likened it to Dvorak's arrangement for Largo) against the background of Susheela's serene expressiveness and warm acoustics as she redeems the song. She gave us the real thing.

Correction: That intro is something should begin after the end of Smt. Susheela's voice.
