Pudhukavithai was invented to invigorate the language itself. This way the word gets held in relief on its own to stand for more than its common use. There are many great exponents of this form...Abdhul Rehman, Mu.Metha, and VM too to an extent. But coining new expressions is one thing and making them palatable is another.
Here is a pudhukavithai sample of VM from TFM that I found unsavory:
Puraa rendu vaanam sendru
megam engum maeyuthae
nila koodu thannil thonguthae
vaanam engum vaira pookkal
vennilaavai moikkum eekkal

Some recent stuff from VM that I like (forgive me, everyone!):
Check out the vivid imagery evoked by these lines:
vaNNaththup poochi udambil
OviyangaL adhisayam
Or, the subdued intensity in these lines:
udalukkuL engE uyiruLLadhenbadhum
uyirukkuL kAdhal enguLLadhenbadhum
Or, the imagination in these lines:
alai nuraiyai aLLi avaL Adai neyyalAgAdhA
viNmeengaLaik kiLLi adhil otti vaikkalAgAdhA

"Nilavu oru pennaagi" is a great song by Vaali and shouldn't be compared to the song I mentioned.
Kanchana, no need to apologize for liking VM. I like a lot of his stuff, I just wish he worked harder and strived for higher things more often.

similar.

I share your views on VM. After reading an assortment of prose and poetry by him, I feel he can be offering more in terms of thoughts and kaviththuvam to us thru TFM. All we see in TFM are annoyingly few, fleeting glimpses of his creative potential.

Udhaya, Kanchana:
Given the specs & schedules wht I write for my client is a piece of code which just fulfils his requirement. Similarly, a kavingar will loose his enthu over the time due to various constraints put before signing for a movie. So, there is no point in expecting some standards/quality. Once a while a kavingar will try to prove his skill & knowledge, just to keep himself in the market demand. Thats it.

Bhaskar,
Thannithotti thaedivantha kannukkutti naan.
Nichayama "Kaithaakkum" not "Kaidhiyaakum" or "Kaidhaiyaakkum".
Kanchana, how come poets always compare the thogai mayil to women, then?

Udhaya, no better classic analogy to capture the beauty and grace but a thOgai mayil, and therefore, falls under poetic license?
Some more unusual lines:

karunAgam enap pinnalittAL
kuRunagai ennum visham koduththAL

Kaidhakkum endraal enna meaning ? Enakku puriyala ?
I am very very very weak in Tamizh, naan Tamizh

My Guess is Kaidhakkum means Arrest!
But Kaidhiyakkum means "Make a prisoner" endraa ?

on: Tue Jun 23 00:53:23 EDT 1998
Bhaskar, are you serious?
You had me totally fooled that you were a native speaker. Bravo! I have so much respect for you.
You guessed right on Kaidhaakkum, it means arrest and Kaidhiyaakkum means make a prisoner.
Kaidhaiyaakkum means make a donkey(in Madras thamizh).

Udhaya MAmaE,
Yes, I was serious! Thanks for the clarification!
I know Madras Tamizh to the Core :-))))
I got the meaning of your
Kaidhaiaakkum dubakoor! before itself! :-)))
I was wondering about the other two!

I was listening to this VM tune I think, can't be sure anymore, which had some new words whose true meaning and context are new to me. The song is "Adada Ithuthaan Sugamo" from "Thudikkum Karangal".
Neeloarpanam kangalil jaadai kaattum
Naan thottathum kunguman saayam theettum
What is Neeloarpanam?
Also, in the same song:
viralgalum viralgalum urasidum pozhuthu
kaadhal theeyin jwaalaigal
Jwaalaigal, is that the term for roaring flames? Is it a thamizh word?
- From: Bhaskar (@ freeway.proxy.lucent.com)
on: Tue Jun 23 16:03:06 EDT 1998
Udhaya:
Just a wild guess ...
Might be "Blue Waves" of the sea....
Jwaalaigal might mean magical ....
