raj- I am sorry- I don't remember listening to the 'Inba mugam ondru kandaen' song.
The only song I seem to recall from Saravanabava & Unity Pictures' Naan Valartha Thangai-1958 is 'Aangal manamae appadithaan'- TMS-PS. I think music was by Pendiyala.
Perhaps a.a, S Ramaswami or Vicky can give us more information on this song.

Saravanan/Raj: I dont recall any songs from the movie "Naan Valartha Thangai", except it was directed by the same guy who directed some well known Telugu and Tamil movies named C Narayana Rao. His films in tamil included: "Ethirparathadu"-1954 (Sivaji, Padmini, Sahasranamam, Chitoor Nagiah and S Varalaksmi), Annaiyin Anai (1958), Patni Dievam (1957), En Thangai (1952) apart from telugu directorial ventures including "Madalasa (1948)-Anjalai Devi, C Krishnaveni and Sri Ranjini Sr; Dakshayagnam (1942)-Gagaih, Garikapati Varalakshmi, Bezwada Rajaratnam (a prolific singer/actress)and T G Kamaladevi (0f Malleswari Fame) and Bhakta Kabir.

Earlier I had promised to write on some of PS/G Ramanathan colloboration. Some immediate thoughts on:
1. Raja Yogamae...Anuraga (Vanangamudi/1957/Sivaji/Savitri/P Pullaih/G Ramanathan/P Susheela/Chorus)
2. Chinnanchiru Kuruvigala..Singara Paravaigala (Sri Valli/Sivaji/Padmini/G Ramanathan/P Susheela/Chorus not the 1945 version of T R Mahaligam/Rukmini/AV Meiyappan/A T Krishnaswamy))
3. Thillalangadi.....Therinchikavenum..Alolam (Arasilangkumari/1961/MGR/Padmini/Raja Sulochana/ASA Samy/G Ramanathan/P Susheela/Chorus)
The mentioned songs are rare gems and unusual off-heard melodies of P Susheela and demonstrates her march to achieve perfection in the art of playback singing. Together, these songs entertain, engross and enlighten today's patron with the greatness of the TFM's past, especially that involved P Susheela's voice that soothed our stresses and enwrap us in reveries with her deeply meditative, melancholic but assured and comfortable tone, the second one being Ravvu Balasaraswathi (listening to her early repertoire in "Apavadu" (1941)- Credits: R Balasaraswathi/Raghuramiah/B Appa Rao/Narasimha Rao/Suluri Rajeswara Rao/K S Prakash Rao/Gudavali Ramabrahmam - Kokila Pata - showing she was ahead with her progressive tendencies in reference to her contemporaries or Pasupuleti Kannamba/CSR Anajaneyulu in " Thelli Prema" (1941)- Credits: S V Venkataraman/D Gopalam or Tunguturi Suryakumari in "Chandrahasa (1941) - Credits: Moti Babu/V Seetarama Sastry).
The songs were little discreet with no spotlight, perhaps, Ramanatha Iyer let it be suggested that he did'nt want to eclipse his other monumental works (unmatched accordian prelude in "Kanvazhi Pugundhu Karuthinil Kalandha" - M S Rajeswari/TMS/Marudhakasi/Thooku Thooki or a pioneer waltzy beat in "Ulavum Thendral Katrinilae"- Credits: K. M. Shreriff/Maruthakasi/G Ramanathan/Modern Theatres/Ellis R Duncan/T R Sundaram).
In all the above colloborations, P Susheela was a friend and pupil of G Ramanathan as was Gabriel Faure to Camille Saint-Saens, especially when it comes to cello compositions (Sicilienne being a good example).
Featuring poised woodwinds/percussion and calculated choral accompaniments, these songs blossom into a breezy unbroken melody with GR sticking to his vintage orthodoxy and P Susheela's voice providing the needed long-breathed vocal utterances.
It represented the GR/PS examples of combined structure, virtuosity and musical intellect. These compositions demanded a vocal mastery which P Susheela surprisingly accomodated (listen to "Then payaum Solai..Ilan Thenral Velai from "Raja Yogame" or Kumbalaga Paranthu Vanthu Kummalame Potta from "Chinanchiru Kuruvigala") embodying her individual passionate tonal qualities in each one of them without a flaw. It was like a combination of perfect climate and soil to yield " Valpolicella"-a veronian wine variety.
Her dramatic and musical interpretations of various screen-heroines were invested with a psychological depth which made her performances and recordings definitive and soul-stirring.
The debate surrounding the real quality of her voice continues to be fanned by her devotees and detractors, intermittently reaching fever pitch at times in one of the other on and off running threads...........but this has not diminished her mercurial dominance over the years....after all she is a legend.

Okay, I just want to share one experience with all of you. Thanks to kalai (he must be tired of me thanking him by now!) I got to hear the Christian song "Aakasangalai" by PS for G Devaraajan. What a soulful tune! Honestly, when you the golden voice of PS, you are transported to a temple or a church, for she has the ability to bring out such devotion in her song. Every note is steeped in that piety and enviable melody and sheer sincerity. PS's repetition of the word "Amen" at the end of each stanza is like the jewel in the crown as far as this song is concerned. The soothing soft interludes and accompanying instruments as well as the chorus add further beauty to this masterpiece. PSs voice comes out clear, soft, sweet, serene, sublime!

Romba thanks for the info and the link. I am listening to the song as I type this up. Oh my! PS's voice is like honey dripping. Seriously, she sounds so so wonderful in this song. I wasn't aware of this song before.
Thanks for taking the time to provide me the info.
AMRaja also sounds great. Saaloori Rajeswara rao again does his magic with the composition. Great song!

Thanks for the appreciation on the malayalam song "akasangalil itikkum njangade". That motivated me to write this article. I think many people dont aware of her contribution towards xian devotional songs.
P.Susheela’s Contribution on Christian Devotional songs- Part-1.
Tamil Xian’s are used to both western and Classical music. So, many xian devotional songs are based on ragas, which were written and composed by well known musicians. Usually there used to be a song book in church, with around 300 to 500 songs, in which many were mentioned with Raaga and ThaLa’s. Moreover they use good tamil in those songs. Recently, I could listen “subrabatham” on mother mary sung by PS an the cassette was tiltled as “mantrattu maalai”.
In earlier days an LP record with all PS songs were real hits. From my childhood I used to hear from churches and even now I could hear those songs (whenever I am going to native). They are “thuthi thangiya paramandala suvisheshakar namam”, “vanthanam vanthaname “ , “thEn inimayilum yesuvin namam thivya madhuramAme”, “dasare itharaniyai anbAi”, “Osanna paduvom yesuvin dasare”. All this songs are the traditional Xian songs which used to be regularly sing in churches. Another record with xian songs in which PS also had songs which is “Idai vidA sahAya mAtha” which is on mother mary, and I think, almost all catholic xian’s know this song. It is very popular and beautifully rendered. One more is “ayyayya naan vanthen, theva attukutti vanthen”, with a rich voice.
On X-mas days, almost all churches play this songs “bethalayil pirnathavarai potri thuthi maname”.It is lullaby for infant Jesus and she sings as “Thoongu thoongu baala neeye “. One more famous x-mas song is “kanden en kann kuLira, karhthanai intru”, which was resembling a word by a prophet , he was waiting for Jesus’s birth .
On New year eve, she had a great song “intha puthiya Andile, nalla Aasirvathangal, vinn dhevan tharuvar”. Beginning of the year itself a song with blessing. It was recored in mid-80’s .
Later, one more record with traditional songs “ seer yesu nadhanukku jaya mangalam”, “paadi thuthi maname, paranai kondAdi thuthi dhiname”, “sthothiram seivEne, ratchaganai sthothiram seivEnE”, “yesuvaye thuthi sei, en manamE, “yesu piran engal yesu piran (LRE’s version also there). Normally on Sundays, before the prayer start they play songs of 30-min or 1 hour. These songs used to be played in many churches. These type of traditional songs were also sung by Jikki, chitra and VJ. As the tune is same, difference will be the rendition.

Another Casette with Marriage songs, “ maNa vAzhvu puvi vAzhvinil vAzhvu “, “managalam chezhikka kirubai arulum”, “ ethenil Athi maNam undAna”, “Asirvadhiyum karthare” . In this cassette also most of them are traditional xian songs, used to sing on marriages.
She has number of songs on mother mary, “ amma devanin thAye”, “alaikadalin Osayile anbu mozhi ketkuthamma”, “arogya mathave amma”, “kathum kadal alai orathile”, “annayaval kAthchi thantha”, “matha neeye arul vellame”,, many in list. Few songs were by MSV. Recently I had been to vElankanni and many places I could hear her songs. Just for curiosity I asked the cassette shop person ( many shops) about the sale. They have told “jikki’s” xian songs are the best sellers. P.Susheela’s cassettes also go very well. I could collect more than 10 casettes( PS xian dev).
Another famous song of PS is “Naan kaanamal pOna Adallava, kathar ennai thEdi vanthar”.
Earlier days, the church functions will be with few songs, or dances with western based music. Now a due to more exposure towards classical music and dance, people started adding classical dances also. I heared many of those numbers of VJ including the prayer taught by Jesus “paramandalangalil irukkum engal”. PS also with few songs with classical touch “nenje nE Andavari vAzhthu”. In the same cassette with another folk type “Andavanil thottam Azhagu malar kootam”. Few years back , I have attended a school function and seen kids playing dance for this songs.
Another casette with a semi-calssical “Iru karam koopi iRai unai thoZhthAl varum thuyar ellam marainthidume” and a beautiful song, pleasant to hear in morning hours , “malarena manathinai thiranthu vaithEn”.(music :Amaldas).
May be in 1998 she came with one more Casette “deva pidha”, most of them were traditional songs, “deva pidha enthan meippan allo”, kathiravan thontrum kaalai ithe”, “enna en anandham” ... In 2000 in MSV’s compositon a CD named “pughazanjali” and PS had a song “ Nenjamellam inikkuthayya”. One more cassette in the same year “Jeevanulla devane” with some good songs.
Moreover many songs were there with western touch like “anbare koodungal aanandham paadungal”.
It’s surprise, she has got an opportunity to sing almost all famous traditional xian songs. Till I started collecting the songs, I didn’t realize about her contibution. She could bring the essence of “Bakhthi” in all her songs. Great!!
I think her contribuion on tamil Xian songs will be in few hundreds. Most of them are very good songs and will be remembered for years.
One famous song of her is “thEn inimayilum yesuvin namam divya madhuramAme” , which can also sing as “thEn inimayilum P.Susheela’vin kural Divya madhuramame..
