Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi can’t stop raving about the songs of Mani Ratnam’s Yuva. “A.R. Rahman and Mani Sir and dynamite together,” says Vivek on the sets of Indra Kumar and Ashok Thakeria’s Masti, and adds, “The six songs Rahman has recorded for the film are mind-blowing.”

Ajay Devgan, his co-star in Yuva and Masti, uses the same words to describe them. Incidentally, when the film was launched earlier this year, Mani Ratnam had decided not to have a single song in it.

Vivek also feels that Abhishek Bachchan’s is the best role and best performance in the film. “That guy’s career will take off in a big way after Yuva,” predicts Vivek.

  dont u think ur being unreasonable when u say MR-IR movies are far better than MR-ARR movies? I thought a MD sticks to the audio part of the film, and doesn't write the story and screenplay! :)
  
  If u say u liked the music by IR much more than u do of ARR, adhu reasonable. Justified.
  But to say MR-IR movies are better than MR-ARR movies, that's shooting a tad too far.
  
  Mouna Ragam had absolutely brilliant BGM. That was trademark IR. All the movies he'd done for MR had excellent music. But that doesnt mean MR's movies are degenerating coz of someone else's music. Admit it, the music of Thiruda Thiruda was way way ahead of their time. And I'm yet to come across such complete albums as Dil Se or Iruvar where u have no ideas of reaching for the FF button.
  
  But every MD has his limitations.
  I just can't imagine IR composing any song for AE. Nor can I imagine Rahman coming up w/ a "Thenpandi Seemayile".

  Well, that's the reason why many love to hate a MR-ARR film.
  
  But SK seemed to atleast appreciate AE for what it was, rather than bring in all kindsa stupid arguments. So it was not entirely worthless trying to explain that he'd got his idea wrong. I mean, i felt he'd at least view what i was trying to say in a broad sense.

  On the movie:
  
  ARR has actually done a pretty solid job considering the mood and theme of the movie. But overall the movie lacked depth, realism and after all the 3 main characters have been introduced the last 30-45 mins drags on with a ridiculously cinematic finish. Mani Rathnam still hasnt gotten rid of some of the things that he has been doing since Mouna ragam - most of his heroines cant speak proper tamil to save their lives, the dialogue, whoever writes them for Mani since Agni Natchathiram seem to stick to the 3 or 4 words/line limit - as a result realism takes a huge hit and the punch robbed off in certain scenes.And all his characters are this way. Surya said recently that Mani thinks in English and then translates to Tamil and this is the reason for his "crispness" of dialogues. Hmm..it doesnt work for me. Surya, whom I didnt even consider to be anything close to an actor 3 years back has indeed come a long way. He' s easily the most convincing amongst the 3 main leads. I hope he continues to choose unique roles and not get into the masala routine like Vikram. Somehow, Bharathiraja didnt impress me as much as he did others. I thought Umapathy in Agni Natchathiram had done an effective cameo and BR's role, modeled along those lines falls just a little short. Surya's role too at times reminds you of Karthik in Mounaragam/AgniN and of Kamal in Nayagan at times. This movie is a sort of an Agni Natchathiram for the current urban college crowd-all style, noise and little substance. Compared to the other popcorn flicks out there, this movie is definitely unique, bears the Mani rathnam touch and for the most part is a good time pass. But, this is a step down for Mani after his Kannaththil Muththamittal IMO. A one-time watch.
