I read an article on Kandukonden Kandukonden`s audio cassette release function in todays online Hindu in "talk of the town" section.VM sems to be very much frustrated with ARR especially the way in which his lyrics are treated by ARR of late!. Is it his response to the comment about the so called `lyrics` in Alaipayudhe?. Infact VM seems to have quoted the songs of "kandukonden Kandukonden" as one those examples. Guys, any comments.

vairamuthu with his crappy lyrics and who is surviving purely because of ARR just cannot comment on ARR, end of story, period.

Why is it that every issue has a good and evil, a right and wrong with us when majority of the time the truth is in the gray middle?
Vairamuthu has every right to suggest to an MD to not drown out his lyrics. This does not make him arrogant, especially when he specifically has mentioned it as a request not to be misconstrued by the media (which it most certainly has). Making film music is a participatory art. If a violin accompanist was off-key he would definitely hear it from ARR wouldn't he?
Yes, Vairamuthu has given some god awful lyrics, but the man has definitely given his share of gems. Even as recent as "Sangamam" his lyrics were powerful.
That ARR is going to bring in new lyricists is great news for everyone; he should have been doing it all along to keep his music varied and fresh. But that shouldn't cut off Vairamuthu who still has a lot left in him.

I would actually like ARR to take vairamuthu's advice seriously and score some songs without a strong BGM or without dominating instruments because that would expose vairamuthu's crappy lyrics even more. then vairamuthu would be the one receiving criticism from everyone and he would keep his mouth shut for a long while.
Sounds like a real good idea. This would be the smartest way that ARR can get back on vairamuthu.

i personally think that it is good for ARR to go for some new and talented lyricist. vm has spoilt quite a few (actually, many) good songs of ARR with his inane lyrics.

I totally agree that rehman music is overshadowing the lyrics lately. If this guy is going to continue with these sort of crap music he should get out from the tamil music world, and should be heading off to bombay or london. Ever since he stepped in the tamil movies the standard of the music has gone to the bottomlevel. For example look at these songs muqabla, petaa raap, absolutely dreadful. So Mr Rehman as far the tamilians are concerned for the sake of the tamil movieworld, would you please take your bunch of crap singers from kerela like hariharan, MG sreekumar, unnimenon etc ,and you also can settle in the shantytowns of kerela with them,so the tamil cinema can live happily everafter.

Yaempaa ippidi thingakkizhamaiyum adhuvumaa vaayak kindura?
I'll do a reverse Manohara, "Pongiyathu poathum porutharul." Perhaps, you should too, Gratien Anand.
I wanted to learn what Gratien meant, the dictionary only had these two results for my search.
Gra·tian (grshn, -sh-n). A.D. 359-383.
Emperor of Rome (367-383) who ruled jointly (from 379) with Theodosius I. Unpopular for his persecution of pagans and heretics and his weakness for frivolity, he was murdered by followers of the usurper Maximus (died 383).
gra·tin (grätn, grtn, gr-t)
n.
A crust consisting of browned crumbs and butter, often with grated cheese.

SM, you probably know this but Muqabla was written by Vaali and Paettai Rap was by Shankar.
Those two songs were confections, fluff songs to please a certain group of fans. Even in the 60s
& 70s we had profound songs such as "Jollilo Jimkaanaa", "Koththavaranga Pola Udambu Alaek".
It's the deterioration of mainstream melodies with their needlessly lowbrow lyrics and pop culture namedropping that causes me concern.
Coming to VM's frustration with ARR. I feel it' very valid in "Kandukondaen Kandukondaen's" case. Have you listened to "Yaaroa Yaaroadi" from that soundtrack? One of the singers for that song sings it like she was on helium and recorded the song exposing her bare body to the winter winds. It's bad enough that this puts enough wrinkles on VM's complicated phrases. But she goes on to rush her words rendering a mortal blow to the language.
VM has written about some gods playing hand ball or some such fantasy and all I could make out was:
"...eeeki poalae daavadikka
In dheera naar pandha dikka(i.e. "Indhiranaar pandhadikka" for you Tamils)"
If I were VM, I would have internal bleeding listening to this.

Oh, I just realized that "Yaaroa Yaaroadi" is from Alaipaayuthae. Well, the parties involved are the same so the issue is still relevant.

FOr your info pg:
"nEtru munniaravil unni
ththilap poomadiyil"
is one of the sample lines. Neththilaththai pichchu erinjuttaanga ! Wondering if adiaaththaadi is split like:
"adi aath
thaadi, nee pO
gumpaa thai enna
maanE "
This type of chukkumu laGuthi ppili lyrics are really tearing tamiz apart.I get reminded of a T.R.Ramachandran's movie where one guy reads a board
"braamaNar
gaL saappidum idam"
No wonder soon VM/ ARR use "ambikaa kaapi" with "ambi" as the first word :-) (sorry for the stink - could not tolerate such lyrics !).
So donot try to decipher is my serious suggestion. Even if you manage to do you will end up with the great lyrics like:
"en cell ellaam pookkaL pookka seyvaai"
"i viralil idukkil olive eNNai thadavi"
type abaththa kaLanjiyams.

Regarding Composing session of
Cheran's movie:
Movie field always tries to balance
Art and Commerce.
I think after Cheran attempted good
movies and got shot, he is in a paranoia
and is trying to give a dance number from
that sister's song! And Deva's tunes
and Vairamuthu's imagery would have sounded
very soft and unsuitable to his situation.
Remember Kannadasan has written for a similar
situation "Kanna Karumai nira kanna". But now
if you write such a song, people would not
want to listen!
Vairamuthu always has the option of
not writing for such a situation. But
if you do art for a livelihood, it always
hits you this way. You become more like
a carpenter and less like a sirpi.
And any creative artist has to create
something that gives him or her artistic satisfaction and also that which meets audience current needs. Yappa, kashtamda saami!
Good artists never compromise. They would starve
rather than bypass their artistic judgement.

Udhaya,
I know that those songs were penned by Vaali and Shankar. My posting was because Mr.GA complains about music overshadowing lyrics and gives as examples, the above two songs. I understand VM's frustration. Azhagu Thamizhil oru paattu ezhudhi adhu makkaLa poi sera vidaama music overshadow pannaal, lyricistukku kobam varradhu nyaayamdhaan. But, for certain banaal lyrics (like the above which are to satisfy a set of people), it is better that the music overshadows the lyrics (actually, the MD is trying to help the lyricist by not exposing his crappy lyrics).

This lyrics exchange is quite hilarious, really..
BTW, when i hear 'yaaro, yaarodi' i think of 'naan vaakkappatta' (phew..what a song, interludes...) from Cheran's Desiya Geetham. Both are similar in that they are the 'thozhiyar' kind of songs, but mayhaps 'yaaro' is not quite set in the rustic milieu that the IR no. was.

I'm not implying any similarity in tunes, but both belong to the same genre of 'thozhiyarudan naayaki manavaalanai kanaa kaanum' kind of songs; mayhaps 'yaaro' is not quite set in the rustic milieu that the IR no. was.
