srinath,
"Sorgame endralum" is no average composition. My god,the chord progressions are heavy, especially the last the part of the first interlude.I would rate this as complex as any of raja's composition.I was listening to "Kamalam pada kamalam" from Mogamul and in a purely classical arena ,raja has introduced some awesome western interludes which are simple but gives tremendous lift to the song. This needs sheer guts and I am amazed.I am sure this is out of context with this thread but "Sorgame endralum" is a real inspiration song for any music lover.

Anand:
By avg. I meant a bass score which was not exactly begging for attention. Of course, for trained ears, it would be easy to distinguish it. Ever heard the layman talk of the bass guitar until Oorvasi, Kadalikkum Pennin Kaigal and Humma ? These are all songs where the bass sticks out like a sore thumb - but to the common man - "Appa ! Soopar base guitar pa !" :-(
You are probably aware of how the bass and rythm guitars are supposed to move in tandem. I am sure the chord progressions and bass would have been lost on most listener's in this song. I wouldn't have even mentioned this song had I not thought high of it !

Hi,
Anand : This one is for you.
In "Magalir mattum", a song barked! by SJ,
"Kutu kutunu kotanum" -- worst song ever done by Raja, how Raja could let SJ scream in 3 different tones - (thinking everything is new voice modulation) I hate that song, oops NOISE.
Also Kamal - what was he doing?

Srikanth : I agree. In general, I have a feeling IR does not do full justice to his choice of singers. Some examples readily come up in addition to the one you mentioned.
1. Yen Vaanile is spoilt by Jency(IMO)
2. Yenthan Vazhkayil (Chinna Kanamma) is a deadly song spoilt by Mano.
3. Ival yaaro (Raajavin Paarvaiyile) is sung badly by SJ - here its not exactly bad singing but the fact is her voice sounds strange and has no youth in it, while the song is supposed to be a duet.
These are all great songs apart from the singers. Of course there are many other songs spoilt by IR himself through his voice (IMO) - not to say that he fails everytime, but his successes are few.
One good aspect about his Telugu and Kannada music is that he calls SPB most of the time.

Srinath,
Maybe you should change your name to Bass Srinath :-) Well ..atleast Srikant should change his name..too many Srikants around :-)
Re: bass guitar. I think in general people are unable to appreciate subtlety. This always happens in every society. Take for eg. how extreme the electic guitar has been taken to by the heavy metal guys.
To understand IRs music one needs to pay more attention. He is not an average kind of guy. He is not in the calibre of Back Street boy or Spice Girls who top the charts but who will soon be eclipsed by some other group very soon. This guy has got musical talent. Sometimes I feel his arrogance (they say so) or indifference comes from the lack of complete appreciation of his music by the masses.
I really wish he conducted concerts and other things to popularise his style of music. Just withdrawing yourself to your own world does not always work. But then again people have their own individuality and I give them room for it.
In order to prevent censure from Ravi, I have to relate all this to the title of the thread. So I saying IR's dabba songs are trivial/ignorable consider the high quality of his other outputs.
:-) :-)

I always wondered how IR could create Ponmeni Nanayudhe - Can anyone get turned on hearing this song, (not watching sssilk) - this would qualify as pure dabba if you ask me - why would you ask me is an interesting question.

raja m: seems that u were not "concentrating" on the song , but u were on sssilk. the lyrics are "ponmeni uruguthe"!!!! the song stands(or fails, if u feel like it) solely due to the rendering of SJ.

Hi srikanth,
Some songs were composed for particular
Situation, like If some song needed for
firstnight situation, IR cannot compose
supprabatham. So don’t criticize genius.
Sorry,
Gowdham

I stand corrected about the words. It failed my exam :))

balaji,
all the songs in maharaasan are not dabba.the film might have been a dabba.
'raakozhi koovum neram' from maharaasan was a big hit. it is a catchy number with a good tune.
- From: balaji (@ schubert.crhc.uiuc.edu)
on: Sun Sep 20 21:10:04 EDT 1998
vijay: ofcourse not. if i remember right, the film was released right beside yejamaan, and was a total washout. the "raakozhi koovum neram" is also not a good number IMHO. also, the song didn't become a hit. it was totally overshadowed by the songs in yejamaan. there was an equivalent oomph song in yejamaan which was more popular than this one!!!
- From: balaji (@ schubert.crhc.uiuc.edu)
on: Sun Sep 20 21:11:29 EDT 1998
vijay: anyhow, u have implicitly accepted that the other songs in maharasan were ultimate dubbas.

Yethammayya yetham manasukkulla yethammayaa yetham - a horrid song sung by M.vasu and Chitra, give them credit for grasping the tune,
Othadi Othadi orama Othadi
Maama un ponnaakkudu (take SPB away and see what is left of the song). I am including the above two not just because they are 'dappangoothus' but I feel even dappaangoothus can be well made with a good tune and rhythm base. I guess we can include all those pretentious melodies ( 'so called melodies' out there ) which are supposed to haunt/urukkufy the listener like some songs in the Bhagyaraj movie which was remade as Mr.Bechara in Hindi, all songs in Walter Vetrivel probably excluding 'Chinna Rasaave' ( a passable song). There are so many movies like above two where the melody is just a drag , which were just a concoction of IR's old tunes and sadly lacked expression , the basic ingredient of a melody.

"Yethammayya yetham manasukkulla yethammayaa yetham" is a great melody except for the stupid lyrics. Its a typical raja fusion(folk and carnatic).
I would'nt rate it as a daapagunthu song.I humbly beg to differ with sriram Lakshman on this.

Yennappa Mahadeva,
Romba yethamayya unakku. Maybe it is not a dappanguthu song, but to me it is not a great melody either. I feel the tune portion is not strong enough for it to be termed a melody regardless of whatever Raaga base it might have had. I would rate 'solam vethakkayile', 'raasave unna nambi', 'ponnula ponnula pannina mookkuthi' etc as good IR folk numbers with melody, not this.Appuram unnai call panren.
Shankar, I have not forgotten the song. I feel that IR gets lost in the charanam and the song becomes tiresome. This is IMO.

IMO, all the songs in "Kalaignan", except for Endhan nenjil are trash (noisy empty dabbas !)
- From: Viswa (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Mon Sep 21 03:23:15 EDT 1998
More trash dabbas from IR : KattaLai, Periya marudhu, Thozhar pandian, etc. In fact, a good number of reviews in mags. like Kalki, AV, etc. went like this :
"Isai Ilaiyaraja vaam - title il varugiradhu !"
"Ilaiyaraja vukku yaaro proxy koduthirukkiraargal pola irukku !" etc.

Viswa,
technically, the songs of kalaignan were good.
U can't say the songs are all dabba, i would have appreciated the songs more if somebody else had scored the music!!
