This is my question....Udit Narayan, Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam, Kavitha Krishnamurti,Sonu Nigam - All sing in Tamil. But their Tamil is really very bad. Are Tamils deaf, tolerant, or have no PERUMAI in their own language? Is there really a shortage of good, tamil-speaking singers? Or is this really Tamil Inferiority Complex?

Female : harini
Male: Hariharan, S. Mahadevan, U. Krishnan
these are the only tamil(well sort of) singers that are in the scene now.
There is no one else in the vision in the horizon. I repeat NO ONE.
so we have a big dearth of talent in tamil nadu with regds to native singers.. like it or not.
Udit Narayan , suckwinder singh is considered by a top MD in India to be better than the available rest.
That speaks badly about the talent available.
One more thing... It doesnt make a difference if a MD composes bad tunes or uses bad singers.. the people ill not like it. This will get reflected in drop in sales as has always been the case.
Since thats not happening. it means people who matter dont care!(or worse they like the voices)
believe me MD's will know in quick time if their songs are failing because of bad singers...
and also trust me when i say people dont buy those cassattes because its thrust upon them or they have no alternative...
tamil cinema music sales has gone into this non-sale droughts many a time in the past and it can happen if the quality is unsatisfactory.
Since thats not happening we'll assume most like it and get n with life.
as to u purists who have a problem with it well! please dont buy em.
And dont shout unless u r good enugh to hold the mike or feel there r 10 good tamil pronouncing people who r good enugh to hold the mike!

ShankerM: Hari is correct.I also have the same reason..
Srini: I am lucky I started with tamil, i am saved.

Actually, ajlg, I am on my way out! This has been so fun, so so fun, that I need to stop laughing.
I will do what I can to give voice to my dissatisfaction with regards to TFM. Collective action, is a kind of a misnomer in forums like this. Thanks to you all for making me see my own naivete.
What's most disappointing to me is this simple fact: World over there is an interest in preservation and propogation of many cultures and languages. There is a Gaelic revival in music, there is a new interest in Yiddish, there is a return to Latin in Choric Music, an cultural focus on Arabic as a language and its poetry....
Somehow, Tamil, which is just a rich and just as old, is falling by the wayside...and what's even more telling: The Tamils don't give a damn!
More power to you guys! Way to go!

Indhu, if u want to preserve or propagate Tamil, there are many other ways to do it.
I may not give a damn about Hindi singers mispronouncing in Tamil songs, but I may be helping out at the local schools to prepare the syllabus to teach kids here (in Perth) Tamil, so that they don't miss out, make it a point to buy whatever Tamil materials r published down under, make it a point to support any Tamil cultural events with my family, and not to mention, help out with the non-profit radio station operating here. You see, that doesn't make me someone who doesn't give a damn about Tamil right? Nope, it makes me someone who is practical and actually doing something constructive to revive Tamil, rather than sitting around fretting about the fact non-Tamils r trying to speak/sing in the language.

The immigrant "tamil" experience cannot be conflated with the "tamil in tamilnadu" experience. I applaud your efforts, what's more I wish I could do the same here in Mumbai. Not that I have not tried (believe you me). Tamil "culture" and Tamil "popular culture" are two different beasts. I could hold Kamabaramayanam upanyasams here, and my mother and a few assorted cousins will attend. And that's as far as that would go.
Trying to maintain your culture with as a minority "community" in Perth is way different from trying to propogate your culture as a "madarasi" in mumbai. I have written scores of articles on Tamil poetry, translated tamil works of literature into english and have had them published in national dailies, I have conducted interviews with tamil musicians and dramatists. I have tried to put Pongal side by side with the Maharashtrian "Sankranth."
Talking/Teaching/Supporting Tamil within a "Tamil" community in Perth (where there is only an "immigrant" history - and a recent one at that ) is way more encouraging as there is no prior knowledge or bias of tamils/tamilians in general. I know Tamils in Canada, in Fiji, in Germany...are all doing the same thing for their language and that is commendable. Tamil as a language/culture does not have any preconceived baggage there - and it is mostly patronised/supported by the diasporic tamil community. The difference: the tamils in tamilnadu are not the diaspora. The tamils/telegus/kannadigas are all "madarasis" in Mumbai.
I am not fretting, really. If a people don't have any pride or regard for their own culture in their own land, then not even a godsend can inspire them. The loss is theirs, and of their own making.

Naaz Ahmed (@ 24.76.127.63) on: Tue Dec 11 11:06:05 EST 2001
Priya, is that Satyakala-Rajesh song you are referring to from ThaniMaram?
Naaz Ahmed
BTW: I have a good collection of these songs on cassettes - here in North America! :-))

I remember Indhu once mentioned she is a Brahmin Tamil. I'm really curious to know what's going on. Maybe Indhu is a Mumbai native who's living in Canada and has a housemate called Naaz Ahmed and they both use the same terminal to surf the net. Or maybe 'Indhu' gets paid to surf the net and generate certain topics to test the reaction. Or maybe Indhu has a split personality...My lateral thinking is taking off at all tangents but not quite working too well...
Maybe there's a more simple and harmless explanation for all this... oh well, whatever..

Good work, guys. I am on a current scholarship in North America. And Naaz is indeed my roomie here. Yes, we do share the same terminal and she is sitting right beside me as I write this. (Hello All, NA). We tend tosurf the net togehter most times. She is the VJ fan. She is way better informed about Indian music. I am not.My knowledge is limited and I know more about Tamil music than her. And I am from Mumbai and I am a brahmin and I will be returning home, to Matunga, on April 29th 2002.
I (or Naaz) had no intention of misleading you. Sorry for the confusion.

please guys save this thread from another big digression?
don't ask Indhu or Naaz as to why they are room mates?
avoid discussions of the follw topics
1) on why a girl and a boy shouldnt be room mates
2) the pros and cons of love and inter religion marriage
3)whether 2 people can stay together b4 marriage etc..
i getting quite tired of formhub kind of topics and I now fear there is 1 big "opportunity" brewing up here. :-)
So I'm premptively nipping it in the bud... :-)

Thank you, Bharath, for being so perceptive about my predicament of sharing a house here with two guys and a chinese girl (only 'til april, thank G). Try explaining that to my grandma - your listed "avoid" topics - in madhuranthagam. For your info: NA is NA (not available - already engaged.)
What is DHCP?

ManiSharma has his own audio company and he releases his film music songs thru his company. But he uses Udit,Hariharan Shankar etc., more than anybody. Even though they dont sound Telugu/Tamil whatever. He justifies his usage of these singers by the record sales he is having, the way songs were hit. So the pressure on recording companies on MD's may not be the reason why MD's use popular singers in other languages in Tamil/telugu etc.,
I am not sure how things are going to change. I dont know who/how many are bothered that a language should be pronounced properly, singers should have good qualities etc., as sales of casettes are never decreasing. They are always soaring.
A tamil lover, one who enjoys a good lyrics, may never get back the things again. But thats things are changing and life goes one. One needs to change with the time. it took lot of time to change this way and takes the same or more time to revert back if there is any possibility.
And people will never stop buying as people want to have the latest thing in their house ( human psycology ) and listen the latest available music in the store. With things are pretty much easier now a days, MD's will never change as sales never go down.
As I said in my earlier posting, even if claims one has written pure tamil, how many are there to understand and deny that, how are there to care for that.
