Jeyaram,
In 1969, Indian govt introduced "Best female playback singer award". In fact, it was decided in 1968 itself but firsrt award was given in 1969. Am not sure why such award was absent earlier.. U know, our PS got the very first time itself for "Naalai indha veLai paarthu". It was a historic victory :-) I guess she received the award from Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
During an interview / chat with MSV, MSV asked PS... "how did u sing that song?"... PS said "neenga solli kudutheenga naan paadinen avlavu dhaan".. MSV was surprised.. she was such a great personality with humbleness..
Subsequently, a major felicitaion to her was arranged in Chennai. U know who was the guest... none other thah Lata Mangeshkar. Lata praised her rendition to a great level...
We can write a lot... but there won't be an end to it... PS is PS :-)

Subbu,
Very interesting information. As you say, the list is endless for PS, the veteran who withstood times.
I want to mention about the divergent "Indru Vandha Indha Mayakkam" from Kasethan Kadavulada (ofcourse MD is MSV). PS showed that she was at ease at such freaky number. Her voice and rendition was very different in this song , suiting the tune and lyrics.

Jeyaram,
U gave a powerful qualification for PS as "the veteran who withstood times". Yeah, it was a sea change in music style from 50's to 60's and 60's to 70's and so on. She was able to do any type of songs viz., 100% carnatic based songs, then semi-classical, pakka filmi-types, folk songs, village types... may be she was not very apt for westren type of songs (exceptions are "mella mella ennai thottu manmadan un velayai kaattu...", "Pesa koodadhu", "Darling darling darling I love you.."). Let it be devotional or love duet or sad/pathos, jolly types, pakka tappanguthu, songs with lot of passion, angry, frustration (Nilavu vandhu paadumO)... she excelled...
Coming to your second part: Listen to "naan saththam pOttu thaan paaduven" from "VeLLi Vizha, "mella mella" from Vazhkai, "Pachai kiLi muthu charam" from "U Su Vaa" (a typical LR Eswari type song) and many other fast beat based. Her voice was so flexible to suit such songs..
Of course 'aging' always becomes a villian for any artist and on top of it the "time". I heard after she lost her husband in 1990, she lost her hopes/confidence/happiness etc, but after some time she again picked up with God Sai's grace and she is able to sing well even now on stages. Somehow I feel that she is very free these days even when she appears in public, interviews, programmes (as judge)...
Pls let us be in touch and share our thoughts.. :-)

Vicky and a.a:
Continuing on rare duets of PS, today I came across a rare PBS-PS duet which starts as 'azhagE amudhE' from the movie, Raja malEyasimman. MD: VR. It is a very melodious song. The movie itself is atrocious, but this song is great.
a.a:
Did you get time to encode 'ulaavum thendral' from Kodeeswaran? I am eager to listen to that song.

SK: Its a rare song indeed. I have a vague memory of it. Thanks for sharing the same with the forum. We all are blessed indeed to have dedicated PS enthusiasts and movie buffs amidst us who are endowed with treasure of information about her filmography.
a.a: Eagerly awaiting "Ulaavum Thendral Nilavai Pirivathu". Could you make it in mp3 format.

Vicky:
There is another PBS-PS duet..
'pooththirukkum vizhi eduththu mAlai thodukkavA'
this melody fills your mind with a happy feeling. PS's singing at the beginning is 'amudhu'! This song is from the movie 'kaNNAdi maNdapam', a flop rAjA rANi movie from the early 60's. Anandhan was the hero. MD is also unknown.. TD Padman. The melody is very much like VR style.
I will make mp3's of both the above discussed songs available on the Psusheelafans club in the next few minutes.

pooththirukkum vizhi eduththu is from the movie Kalyana mandapam. Hero Ravichandran. MD: Rangasamy Parthsarathi (Avan piththana, Kalyana oorvalam)
kaNNadi maalikai MD was Padman.

sk- thanks for bringing up such forgotten, lovely songs. 'Azhage amudhe' is a very good example of the early duets of PBS-PS. Especially the lines 'Aasai kanave, anbin vadive' (I think), which are repeated, once in a low pitch, and then at a higher pitch and the playful humming which follows, with PS beginning with 'Anja nenjan, en azhagesan' are truly enchanting.
Btw, who acted in 'Raja Malayasimhan'?
Reg. "Poothirukkum Vizhiyeduthu', the MD for Kalyana Mandapam was R Parthasarathi. KM starred Anandan and KR Vijaya.
As far as I can remember, T Padman scored music for only one film -'Kannadi Maaligai', which had the melodious 'Naanam yeno'-PBS-SJ and 'Siritha mugam venumadi penne'-PS & chorus.
Btw, is it 'Kulaavum thendral' or 'Ulaavum thendral', as I had asked in my earlier post?

Saravanan:
I bought a VCD of 'rAjA malEyasimman' last year. The movie is pretty ordinary. (Produced and directed by B.S. Ranga.) Ranjan is the hero. Raja Sulochana is the heroine. Sowcar J comes as Ranjan's sister. There are many songs. PBS, PS, SJ, MSV, JR, SCK, GKV all have sung songs. By the way, the titles mention that GKV has also acted in the movie.. perhaps in some small role. I bought this VCD mainly for the 'azhagE amudhE' song. But, after spending a whole 2.5 hours watching the movie, I found that the song is not there in the movie! Very strange, because that song is the ONLY positive thing about that movie. The movie came in 1959 it seems. There is also a decent PS solo which starts as 'veNNilavE nillu un eNNamenna sollu'. All songs are by Marudhakasi.

sk- Thanks for the details. I seem to remember a rare duet by SCK-SJ (maybe their only duet)from the film. I am not getting the opening line just now.:-(( Again, this must be among the earliest songs which SJ sang for MSV-TKR.
Interesting news that GKV acted in the film. Of course, he acted as Mohan's father in 'Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu'- maybe, since MSV-IR were the joint MDs, and he was closely associated with both of them! He comes as a musician in the film. But V Gopalakrishnan dubbed for him- don't know why, as GKV spoke perfect tamil.
You have mentioned MSV as among the singers of Raja Malaysimhan. Then this must have been his first song (Of course he did hum in 'Thaazhayaam poo mudichu'-Baagapirivinai-also 1959.)
Can you list all the songs of the film, please?

I sent you a mail last week and again today with two songs as compensation.
Vicky,
I sent you a mail too. Your favourite song from `Kalyanam Pannippar' will be sent to you shortly.

Hey friends it is a great combination if she sings duet with TMS don't you all agree?
- From: Subbu (@ 216.52.49.5)

Mithra, I beg to differ with you... There was uniqueness in the duets either with TMS or with SPB or PBS or with AM Raja... May be because of the Typical heroic voice of TMS, the duets with PS were perceived as grand. I too fall in that category. But we all assured that PS duets with PBS, AMR, KJY, SPB were definitely with rich melody...
Some ex:
Kaatru veLiyidai kaNNamma (with PBS from Kappalottiya thamizhan)
Nilavum malarum paadudhu (with AMR in Then Nilavu)
Vizhiye kadhai ezhdhu (with KJY from Urimai Kural)
Iyarkai yennu iLaya kanni (with SPB from Shanthi Nilayam)...
and many more....

I got the 2 songs and I have uploaded them in the Rare PPP page. I have also sent you an email.
Manisegaran:
