SaravaNan, I will write to you a personal mail.
There were several songs those days which had what we call as "iyaibuth thodai" in Tamil ilakkaNam. (ending in similar sounds, as against ethukai - which is having same second letter, with first letter being same sound (either nedil or kuRil) vambu, thumbu, kambu, ambu and mOnai (first letter being the same anbu, azhaku, aRivu, amaithi). You notice that ehtukai is more mellifluous than mOnai. Iyaibu, which is the same last sound (illai, thollai...) is not given much importance in literature as this was considered as too easy to come with. (As evidenced by tonnes of nonsense by VM/TRajendar).
Early 80's saw a wave of these songs (contrary to those poor souls amazed by the lyrics of chinna chinna asai and think that it was the first time). I guess it all started with vAn nila..
1. vAn nila, nila alla (pattinap pravEsam)
2. thErOttam, anadha sehnbagap pUvAttam (nUlvEli)
3. pAvai nee malligai, pal nila punnagai
4. SOTD
MSV/KB/Kannadasan indulged in some interesting lyrical excercise. Most of these which required rendering the poem with minimal orchestration called the great skills of spb. (only one "pAvai nI malligai was by Jeychandran and VJ)
aadi veLLi, thEdi unnai > andhadhi (new stanza begins with the last word of the previous)
vaN nila, - iyaibhu thOdai
thErOttam has even more complex, amazing lyrics.
thErOttam anadhan shenbaga pUvAttam
kAviri pongkitum nIrOttam
kaNtathum nenjinil pOrAttam
thErOttam..
pUnthOttam kaNda mAnAttam,
ponvaNdattam, idum pUvAttam
vaNNa vaNNa mugam pAlAttam - antha
vaNjiyin mellidai nUlaattam
....
kaNNadasan did not churn out same iyaibhu cliche after one mega hit. He came up with something even better than that.
BTW, It was actually van nila nila alla that launched spb as No.1. Till then it was KJY.

Raj, when someone has given as many gems as SPB has, more than anyone else, for several MDs, you are bound to get more songs of him than others. Otherwise, I dont think there is any intended bias against other singers here. A lot of rare singers/MDs have been featured here in SOTD.

Song of the Day: mannavan vandhaanadi from Thiruvarutchelvar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mannavan.rm
- A classic to get into the weekend! (No update tomorrow due to the long weekend here.)
- MD: KVM. Sung by P.Suseela. Lyrics by Kannadasan.
- Raagam Kalyani.
- This clip includes the introductory chant, that lasts for almost a couple of minutes.
- PS apparently mentioned that this was her most unforgettable song, saying 'Romba Kashtappattu Padina Pattu Illaya'.
- Chandrasekaran writes in a thread on Kannadasan:
In the early 90s I saw a TV program in S'pore featuring KVM and Pugazhendhi's interview.
They mentioned about their experience composing the grandeur Mannavan Vandhanadi Song.
The song reflects all the details of the magnificent Kalyani raga. The words were
superbly interwoven with the swara structure. Pugazhendi mentioned that both he and KVM
were awe struck when Kannadasan, composed the line Ri... ri ga ma pa da ni sa.., while giving
suitable words for the ending notes (ni, dha, pa, ma, ga) and begining
notes (sa, ri, ga, ma, pa, da, ni). Pugazhendi, when reminiscing this incident, was in tears
and mentioned that Kannadasan had a fairly good knowledge of ragas and notes.
- In the introduction to that thread (http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/4999.5180.07.11.34.html ), Sankar writes:
In the file ‘ Thiruvarutchelvar’, no one can forget the great song ‘ Mannan Vandhanadi’. This song was penned by Kannadasan and music by legendary KVM and sung by P.Suseela. I do not think we can ever get a better song in the Raga Kalyani in our tamil movies when compared to this song . This song has all the nuances of Kalyani in a capsule form.
In the Charanam, look at these lines,
Viraivinil Nee… Ni
Mana malar Tha .. tha
Thiru Marbaa… Pa
Thamadhama… Ma
Mayil ennai Ka… Ga
Ni.. tha.. Pa.. Ma.. Ga….
The words end in the avorahanam of Kalyani ( descending order of the musical notes)
Similarly, there is one stanza which will have the first letters in the arohanam ( ascending order).. I do not recollect the exact lines..
Sa…
Ri.. ri ga ma pa da ni sa..
Ka.. karunaiyin Thalaiva
Ma.. Madhi migu Mudhalva..
Do we have any such poet today ?

A big thumbs up for this song. this used to be the torch bearer in the Ilangai vaanoli programme " Naatiyap Paadalgal". Sivaji's majestic varugai also adds lustre to the song. This song and " paarthen sirithen " are my favourites among the many gems of KVM.

Tamil film industry has always a place many talented behind-the-screen hands. One of such gems is AP Nagarajan, who produced and directed many classic hits under the banner “Vijayalakshmi Pictures”. Aa.Pi.En, though short, had big keerthi’s. I think his golden period was 60’s, a chain of success like Navarathri (1964), Thiruvilayadal (1965), Saraswathy Sabadham (1966), Thiruvarut Chelvar (1967), ever-rich Thillanaa MohanaambaL (1968). Though the films like Kandhan KaruNai (1967), Thirumaal Perumai (1968) did not hit the commercial box, it never lacked the richness in pick-up of short stories, talented cast, excellent trick shots, beautiful dances, and of course “grand music”.
Bunch and bunches of hit songs came out from all the above films. Maximum credit goes to the endrum iNai piryadhu irundha “KV Mahadevan and his associate Pugazhendhi”. Never to miss to add: KVM’s music always had the excellent support of the very meaningful and simple and interesting lyrics of KaNNadaasan. Pen and Paper and Music Direction are ready, but who will make it real? Of course ‘THE MALE voice’ of TMS and the ever-grand influence of P.Susheela, shouldered the ‘maximum’ responsibility.
If I start listing the songs from each film, ‘bb’ would not post any more song from APN’s films and so, let me bullet only those from “Thiruvarut Chelvar” (cast: Sivaji, Gemini, Muthuraman, Nagesh, Savithri, Padmini, KR Vijaya, Manorama, G. Sakunthala etc)
= Irukkum Idathai Vittu illadha idam thedi – by Seerghazhiyaar (Govindarajan)
= Aathu veLLam kaathirukku azhukku thuNi neranjirukku – by AL Raghavan and LR Eshwari
= Piththa Pirai Soodi (starting)….. continues with ‘siththam ellam enakku siva mayame Iraivaa’ - by TMS (top-class devotion in TMS’s voice)
= Maasil veenai-yum Maalai Madhiyamum - by TMS
= Kaadhalaagi Kasindhu KaNNer Malgi - by Master Maharajan (S/o. Tiruchi Loganathan)
= ThaaL thirvai aalaya maNi kadave – by TMS and Master Maharajan (who gives only aalabanaa) – ‘bb’: please post this awesome piece some time later !!!
= Aadhi sivan thaaL paNindhu aruL peruvOme – by TMS and P.Susheela
= Nadhar Mudi Melirukkum Nalla Paambe – by TMS

= The ever-green and so delicious number “Mannavan Vandhanadi” by PS.
In fact, as all of you may be aware, the film starts with the “thogayara” of this song. As ‘bb’ said, this goes for 1+ min and then after that “TTTTTaaaaaaan”, there is ‘Naattiya PeroLi’ Padmini in Nataraja pose next the BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG idol of Lord Nataraja. Then you have the dance starts with the lead “mannavan vandhaanadiiiiii thOzhi…”…. Out great Sivaji enters into the hall with that Raaja Gambera Nadai…. Simply class. If you get the DVD, just enjoy his every single style through out the song…
All parts and piece of this song are ever lingering. I can say it is a “Saagaa varam petra paadal”. One of the greatest product” from TFM is “Mannavan vandhaanadi”.
APN+KD+KVM+PS+Sivaji+Padmini…. What a team!!!!!!!

Some more to add:
1. This song was the best favorite PS’ number of (Late) Dr. Mohan Rao, husband of P.Susheela. She mentioned this when she took part in Gangai Amaran’s music programme held in 1995 at Naradha Gana Sabha, Chennai.
2. KVM+Pugazhendhi mentioned during interview for Madras DD (in early 90’s), interviewed by Vani Jayaram, that the work right from lyrics till final recording took a span of 10 full working days.
3. In 1987, a special light music programme organized by Mumbai Tamils in ShaNmugananda hall on the HOLI day. It was lead by KVM and his band with only 3 singers TMS, Seerghazhiyaar and P.Susheela. Pugazhendhi was the main conductor. PS sang this song in the second half of the programme and it was amazing to hear the ‘ditto’ of the original after 20 years of recording. There was a huge demand of ONCE-MORE and PS did honor to repeat it from “thooviya poovinil menigaL aadida”. Kudos to Pugazhendhi who never slipped in his jathi’s.
4. When Nadigar thilakam Sivaji passed away, many paid tearful homage. PS was also one among them. I think Mannan interviewed he (Sun TV). PS said Sivaji always showed great interest during recording of the songs and encouraged the artists (So as MGR). It seems, she was bit anxious in the beginning before recording of “Mannvan vandhaanadi”. The entire crew motivated her, Sivaji’s being the maximum, she could successfully complete the song. Also she recalled Sivaji’s involvement during recording of Thillana MohanaambaL.
A lot more can be shared about this song… let me leave it to other listeners and lovers of music.
Thanks bb.

Thanks bb for Mannavan Vandhaanadi. Great song by PS.
Subbu - a good write up on APN. All his movies were classics. He knew how to put everything together, excellent dialogues, comedy, grand set and costume design, classical music and top acting (sometime over the top acting by SG :-).
Thillaana Mohanambal/Thiruvilayadal are 2 examples of classic Tamil films.
Great song for the looooooooonnnnnnnnggg weekend.
