bb: I think you are referring to Gayathri. I doubt if this movie has Rajini playing a role as I vaguely remember seeing this movie.

As bb said, the interludes are good for hearing. Otherwise too much of iraichal and high pitches by Janaki. keeeeechi thalli vittanga. Similar keechified songs kadalin deebam onru (female), kanmaniye kadal enbadu etc. may be poor quality of this song in the link add oil to the iraichal

Engum Niraindha is a song of epic proportions, two different charanams, three evocative interlude, and an ambient prelude - the unpredictable opening with a flute staccato or something tells you that you are getting into a wide wide ambient song with lots of highs and low notes. The third prelude flute and backing is a classic IR sound.
Yesudas who usually never fails in the higher scales does not really get there without being noticed in this song. Janaki steered straight with her full throated pitch - that is my only problme with SJ as narayanan aslo feels the same.
This song and another IR ambient song - Thenil Aadum Roja with a similar effective prelude are two of my IR songs that stand up as India' epic sounding songs, In the hindi world - I take Ravindra Jain' - "Sunaiyana" and "Hey Goriyan Rey" as unbeatable epic proportion songs. In malyalam - Salil Choudhry' Evide Kaatinu Sugandham & MSV' VeenaPPoove are close. These songs are the most accurate in bringing a dramatic lively colorful illustration of the wide open fields of Indian country life. The songs have full scope for singers and musicians to express those sounds and feelings!

Rana, showing amateurish films Asoka, Kabhi Kushi etc.. or Mohabatein, and other recent freaky stuff, I just don't understand why Indian films should get any attention at all. Is it because now Indian actresses are "opening" themselves to the moral trends of the day and even perosnally inviting foreign critics, producers to check it out or is it because Indian male actors are willin to come out of the closet because international film makers are mostly happy and closet types? Man, i can't figure why all this nosie. Bend it like Bechham had all the hype and now it is now well settled at 20 million dlrs for last 5 weeks/!
i am not saying i am not supporting, show some style, originality and class fellas.

Song of the Day: mangai oru thingaL from mun oru kaalaththile.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mangaioru.rm
- A rare song of SPB and MSV. Thanks to Saravanan for digging this out. The song meanders as a rendition of a long poem, but SPB has produced enough variations to keep the song interesting. A must listen for SPB lovers. MSV's orchestration is minimal.
- Saravanan writes on this rare song:
‘Mangai oru thingal’ is from the unreleased film Mun Oru Kaalathilae- perhaps recorded in the early 80s. Sung by SPB. Music by MSV. I have heard this song a few times in 1983-84 in Radio Ceylon. The other songs in this film were ‘Kodaiyilae pachchai thanni’-VJ, ‘Nallaarukkum nallaarukkum namma mala thenu’-PS and ‘Otta paanaiyila nanda vitta’-PS.
Mangai oru thingal is a song where the imaginative lyrics (Vaali?) take the center stage- and MSV wisely makes the music so inconspicuous with just the guitar providing an encouraging backdrop, and gives SPB a free hand with the song, and how SPB has enjoyed himself!
I love the song for its lyrics and SPB’s voice.

SOTD can be heard just for SPB, I agree. It feels almost like an unplugged version. Cannot listen to any present day voices for a while after listening to this song.

Vijay, right, many SPB+MSV songs look like unplugged versions. I wonder how much did MSV dictate to SPB. I doubt if MSV gave this much freedom to any other singer. I don't see this kind of a composition with other singers like TMS or PS.

Anohter song that takes me down the nostalgic lane. This is SPB all the way and these were the kind of songs that got us hooked up to him much early in his days. Feel that "thazha thazhappu" in his voice. That sense of being overwhelmed by the beauty is made evidence all the way. Amazing lyrics. MSV knows where to underplay and leave it all in the hands of SPB.
Yes, vijay you are right, this song kills all the current crop. When you imagine that this was an onset of a newcomer and search for similar sings in the current generation, you come out feeling empty.
If I can get the MP3, I will do some cleaning up. Another song close to my heart. Million thanks saravanan!

Venkat- I remember us discussing this song some time back--the song brings back so many memories.
It was in 1983, that I came back to Madras after three long years of being away, and got back to Radio Ceylon with a vengeance.
Pongum Poombunal was an integral part of hurriedly getting ready to school. This song, along with 'Thennangeetrum thendral kaatrum', 'Naan iravil ezhuthum kavithai muzhuthum', 'Chandiranai paarthaal sooriyanaai therigirathu', 'Siricha kolli mala kuyilu', 'Vaan meedhile adhikalai nera ragam'---belongs to that time frame in my memory.
Sk has been initiating me to the marvels of mp3 technology. Hope to share some more songs with you all soon.
Btw, you're right- MSVkku vaasikkavum theriyum, adakkivaasikkavum theriyum :)
I can send the mp3 to you, if you wish.

raj - being an ardent fan of spb myself, I represent bb in your court, without being summoned :)
Yes, PJ, KJY, MV are some of the best singers tfm had. But over the twenty+ years of following tfm, spb amazes me even today for the following reasons;
Everytime you think, "oh that is it, he has done him best here", you go back and find another treasure from him. Just in today's song - aren't you amazed by the delivery of spb. That sense of being overwhelmed in the voice. I can get the feeling of him on the verge of almost about to break into a cry. That awe-inspired crying that is due for these words.
Another factor is his dedication in work. He is not a native Tamil speaker, in as much as KJY; but even after years of singing in Tamil you hear his aweful pronunciation. (Just the other day, I got irritated hearing thiRuppar kadalil 'palli' koNdayE). spb gives his best for every song. PJ has the same problem as kjy. mv has his limitations (imagine mv singing this, or for that matter anyone else!! If I think of TMS delivering this lyric, I ROTFL).
It doesn't mean that I do not like the trio. But they do not surprise me everytime I hear a new (old) song. I guess, bb picks up songs for their uniqueness and spb delivers its in every song he has sung. Seeing more spb, thus, does not surprise me. I would not like to see another quota system implemented.
