I found this rare write-up on Sunanda in chennai online. There is a reference to this song - kaadhal mayakkam which incidentally is her first. the writeup is as follows:
-------------------------------------------
In the strange world of music, where we often come across artists who would boastfully describe what music means to them, we could find one for whom music's divinity springs forth from the inner sanctum and manifests itself as kindness and respect for others. Living in a harmonious family and dragging herself to the unfathomable levels of achievement. For play back singer and carnatic performer Sunanda Menon, rendering her voice to some of the best remembered film numbers in itself is not a greatest accomplishment. "It is not just enough to sing a few songs and claim that I have done something. At least I know that music is an ocean and you cannot see the other side," she says with her polite tone and a sweet smile emanating from her lips.
Sunanda's tryst with music, dates back to her childhood days when she intently observed her brothers repeating Swaras and Varnas after their master. It is said that she even occasionally used to repeat some of the songs they sang. The family understood Sunanda's inclination for music and encouraged her to learn more. Her brothers Sunil Kumar Raja, and Surdas Raja, in particular, nurtured her passion for music. Initially, the quest for musical magnificence was mounted by the three together. An observant, Sunanda picked up not just the taste and style, which incidentally was that of Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, but also many small semi-classical songs in Malayalam. One such song, 'Iswaran Manushyanay Aavadarichu' composed in rag Mukhari and often sung by K. J. Yesudas earned Sunanda the first prize at a prestigious state level competition.
"People use to say that I sang three songs instead of one allotted for every participant, and those were
followed every time when the audience applauded," she says finding it difficult to recall, since it happened when she was just 4-years-old.
At school, endearing teachers could be a difficult task for the kids. But Sunanda's music did even this for her. In the drawing classes when children are normally engrossed in dabbling with the paint, for a change in Sunanda's school they were made to listen to her songs which drowned her drawing teacher more than any one.
Every encounter that Sunanda had with music doubled her delight. The serene atmosphere of Sri Krishna temple in Guruvayur provided the ideal setting for her. Flanked by her brothers, Sunanda's performances at this temple gave her immense satisfaction. This is also the place, where she along with her brothers, gave recitals of poems for a documentary film titled ‘Noku Kuthi’, which won a national award for its impressive choreography. As a teenager, Sunanda dreamed of becoming a doctor. "I consider doctors to be angles who often saved the humanity from serious diseases. But, when the choice came, it so happened that I opted for music," she says. Her college life was spent in the campus of Queen Mary's in Chennai in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Music. During her second year, she met Illayaraja through her father's colleague at the Prasad studio. Her rendition to the
Krithi 'Rama Rama guna seema' convinced the maestro of her readiness to begin a career in play back singing. "First I was asked to see, how a song was recorded, just a day before my own recording was fixed. I know I was slowly preparing myself to face the situation," reveals Sunanda. Her voice was taped for the song 'Kadhal Mayakkam' in AVM's movie Pudumaippen. The song became an instant hit and reverberated in the light music halls and in the radio. "Raja sir (Illayaraja), offered me valuable advice on how I should adapt myself to the studio conditions and in fact working with him is a memorable experience," she says. It was Illayaraja and Lyrist Vairamuthu, who taught Sunanda the subtle differences in the Tamil and the Malayalam diction, which she points out, was helpful in singing in Tamil. She became the protagonist behind many hit numbers. 'Vella Manam Ulla Machan' in the movie Chinna Veedu directed by Bagyaraj, 'Anandham Pongida' in the film ‘Seraipparavai’ to name a few. Coupled with many stage performances both as a light musician and as a classical singer, Sunanda's popularity went up in the late eighties and in the early nineties. The song 'Mannava, Mannava' in the movie ‘Walter Vetrivel ‘earned her greater acclaims.
Although a singer of mass appeal, Sunanda's own musical liking is more for the melodies of Hariprasad Chaurasia's flute recitals, powerful and pondering music of Bade Gulam Ali Khan. However, her regards for K. J. Yesudas, S. Janaki, Latha Mangeshkar, whom she grew listening to are no fewer. Particularly, the versatility of Asha Bhonsle startles her. In the recent days, reading about the spiritual inducement behind the greatest compositions of the musical trio of Carnatic-Thiyagaraja, Siyama Shastri, and Muthuswami Dikshidar- enables her to develop great devotion for music. "Nowadays, we work with material intentions. But, look at those giants, they composed music only for God and their love for him," she says.
Nurtured in a traditional background, her open mind for other forms of music, notably western is astounding. She has sung in some of the latest Tamil pop albums, such as Vanavil composed by Sachin Chaodry.
Music apart, Sunanda has a wider interest for reading. Her food habits are varied, since she has lived in many south Indian cities. But she relishes tandoori items with chicken. Licking a small piece of mango pickle along with her meal is also a particular liking for her. But I particularly avoid citrus fruit juices, and ice creams during my recording days, because, at least to me, they affect my voice.
Sunanda's career in Music is supported and motivated by her husband Ramdas Menon, himself an Erudite musician. "I like his sincerity, punctuality, and more than anything, his supportive nature, " she acknowledged.
Presently singing for a film, Sunanda also gives carnatic music concerts in famous sabhas like Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, India Fine Arts, Kartik Fine Arts, Mylapore Fine Arts, Nellore Thyagaraja Sabha and also during some temple festivals. Her great interest for composing her own music is apparent from the recent cassette Om Ganesha in which she has sung the 51 pootries (Praises) of Lord Ganesha.
Whatever her accomplishments may be, she seems to be looking forward to than in marveling at her milestones. It is this attitude and the spontaneity with which the music flows from her,
that marks her success in life.

Song of the Day: engum niraindha iyarkaiyil from idhu eppadi irukku.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engumnirai.rm
- MD: IR. Sung by KJY and S.Janaki.
- The song has a unique pallavi that runs long. The pallavi goes as: "engum niRaindha iyaRkayil enna sugamO, pOngi varum Chinnan chiRu uLLangaLil enna kanavO, eNNangaLil enna suvayO". The interludes are also rich and beautiful, especially the second interlude. Vintage IR stuff.
- The film starred Rajini, Jaishankar and Sridevi and was based on a Sujatha novel. The film came in 1978, making this one of IR's earlier numbers.

I wish songs like these were remastered and were avilable in better quality :-( One of my long time IR favourites this is one song that will probably always sound fresh to me. As Saravanan mentioned in the other thread, SJs humming along with the accompanying string portion is one of the many memorable features of this song.
