Friends,
I consider 'Swami Ayyappan' to be the best Ayyappan movie made till date. It had a seamless blend of mythology and the contemporary stories, with a bouquet of evergreen devotionals.
As regards Lord Vishnu in the film, the role was played by a person who appeared ideal for the role, some Neelakantan or some such actor, who had earlier stolen the show with his bewitching smile as Krishna in ThEngaai's 'kaliyugak kaNNan'.

OISG: 'thedugindra kangalukkul' was sung by P.Suseela not Ambili Rajasekaran. It was for child artiste Baby Sumathi (sister of Master Prabhakar). Suseela tried her voice best to suit the child. Good attempt.
This film was originally from Malayalam and later dubbed into Tamil. Subramaniam chettiar produced in both languages. Actresses like Srividya, Lashmi were famous in both, acted in the movie.
To inform you, Even TMS songs "Sabari malayil" and "Swamiye saranam saranam pon ayyappa" Title song was sung by Yesudas in Malayalam.
But Yesu's Tamil pronouciation was not so good. He sings like "Thiparkadalil palli kodaye". It should be PaLLi kondalye... But palli (in Tamil) means Lizard, correct? Some more such bad pronounciation: Theru kovile odi va
Harivararsanam (Yesudas sang it privately) is being used in Sabarimalai even now at the time of 'Nadai Adaippu' (closing of devosam/temple). Not this film version is being used
thanks

Song of the Day: sindhanai seyyadaa from Petra Manam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sindhanaisei.rm
- Sung by MLV, with Sivaji reciting dialogues in between.
- What is unique about this song? It is in the form of a conversation, between a mother and a son. There are no interludes in this song. Instead, Sivaji pours his heart out. He is grieving, and MLV sings to console him. The lyrics are very interesting. It starts off with a thirukkuRaL (I think).
Sivaji apparently has fallen from the riches. He had everything and then lost it. He is afraid to live, and asks "eppadi vaazhvEn".
MLV replies
"namadhu naattin vaazhkkai nilai Ezhmai allavaa
..
azhuvadhanaal arugil vandha Ezhmai theerumaa
aRivu koNdu vElai seidhaal meeNdum vaazhalaam"
Sivaji is not convinced. He says that he doesn't know anything, doesn't know how to work, and is not sure how to live.
MLV then cites Gandhi and Budhdhar. She says, "Gandhi Ezhaik kudisaiyil vaazhavillaiyaa".
Sivaji says that no one will come near him due to his current state.
To this, MLV replies that she (his mother) will be with him always!
Check out Sivaji's emotional rendering. How easily he conveys the mood of the movie through this song!
- I don't know much about the film. I think Sivaji played a role inspired by Periyaar in this movie. The MD for the movie is S.Rajeswara Rao.

This song made my eyes glisten. The nurturing spirit of the mother, her limitless love for her son, and her consoling wisdom - all coalesce in MLV's rendition. Sivaji's dialogue is a study in tamizh pronunciation. He aptly conveys frustration and a loss of self-esteem; his outbursts synge the heart and we feel his pain and (mis)placed pride in every new horror of poverty that he contemplates.
A poignant narrative of a song.
Thanks.

Oops, catchin up tryin hard.....;--)
Swami Ayappan songs are to Hindu holiday/devotional music what Christmas Carols are to Christmas moods. All of Devarajan' tunes are perfect, absolutely nostalgic of the december ayappan season and inspiring like carols. devarajan has only one ayyapan song that is a super classic in one other film I thinK: Pambayaru Pirakkunna Sabarimalayil.....
btw, Wasn' Devarajan a Tamilian?
bb, more such songs during December will be super!

{warning:digression}
Yes, these give a markazhi feeling. Sometime sending chill down the spine.
I can never forget the nightmares, when I used to be forced to wake up for "arai aaNdu partichai" during dec. After all my attempts to resist fail (just before my mother utter the word - kadankaaraa) and soon as I brush my teeth and drink the coffee and sit straight and open the book - the 'loutspeker' would scream "maa malai sabariyilE manikantan sannithaanam".
Even today, when I hear this song (seldom, really), I shudder, quiver, tremble, dither and twitter.

Ramki, from what I read on the net it looks like CR's Navrang came earlier which makes this version a replica.

Song of the Day: kaadhal mayakkam from Pudhumaip peN.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kaadhalmayakkam.rm
- A melodious song by Ilayaraja to get to the weekend. Pandiyan with heavy glasses and Revathi dance around gigantic paper mache bells, in this Bharathiraja film produced by AVM. The song is set in one of my favorite raagams, Sudhdha SaavEri. InnaruL tharum annapooraNi, in this raagam, was featured in SOTD earlier. I like the interludes of this song too.
- Vairamuthu has done a good job in this song. I like the lines,
Naan thoongum veLai kanavugaL thollai
naan thoongavillai kanavugaL illai
- Cinema Virumbi noted this in the titbits thread:
1.In Bharathiraja's 'Pudhumaippenn', VM wrote a song as:
"Aayiram janmam eduththaalum unnaip pirivathillai!
Unnaip pirivathaanaal, Kanne, ini janmame eduppathillai!" For this, IR had already planned a tune in mind and kept requesting VM to fit the song into the tune. As it was getting very difficult to break the lyrics, VM scrapped these two lines and wrote afresh "Kaadhal mayakkam! Azhagiya kangaL thavikkum! AalinganangaL paravasam ingu anumathi ilavasam .... etc.," and the rest is history!
- Sung by Jayachandran and Sunandha (her first song in TFM).
- Set in Sudhdha Saaveri Raagam. InnaruL tharum annapooraNi, in this raagam, was featured in SOTD earlier.
- From http://www.chennaionline.com/bandstand/sunanda.asp ,
During her second year, she met Illayaraja through her father's colleague at the Prasad studio. Her rendition to the Krithi 'Rama Rama guna seema' convinced the maestro of her readiness to begin a career in play back singing. "First I was asked to see, how a song was recorded, just a day before my own recording was fixed. I know I was slowly preparing myself to face the situation," reveals Sunanda. Her voice was taped for the song 'Kadhal Mayakkam' in AVM's movie Pudumaippen. The song became an instant hit and reverberated in the light music halls and in the radio. "Raja sir (Illayaraja), offered me valuable advice on how I should adapt myself to the studio conditions and in fact working with him is a memorable experience," she says. It was Illayaraja and Lyrist Vairamuthu, who taught Sunanda the subtle differences in the Tamil and the Malayalam diction, which she points out, was helpful in singing in Tamil.

Thanks bb. Nice song.
Bharathiraja’s favorite ‘Apparitions in White’ add to the horror of a bespectacled Pandian,to completely ruin the pleasure of watching the song.
Sunanda sang only a few songs- apart from Vellai manam, Aanandam pongida and Mannava mannava that she has mentioned in the interview, some other songs are:
Poo mudithu pottu vaitha vatta nila- En Purushan Thaan Enakku Mattum Thaan
Poonthendralae nee paadi vaa- Manasukkul Mathappoo
Sangeetham kelu-Jeeva
Mudhal mudhalaai naan, Hey Kuruvi & Madhura samba marikkozhunthu- Thangachi
Solli solli vandhathillai-Senthamizh Paattu
Shenbagamae Shenbagame- Enga Ooru Paattukkaran
Natchathira jannalil- Sooryavamsam
My favourite is ‘Un ennam engae engae’ from Thambi Pondaatti.
I remember reading that Sunanda and Chitra were classmates.
