Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

Sirithal - One of the killer Non-IR songs of the 70s - Long Live Radio Sri Lanka!!! (it was a favorite there) One MSV type song from another composer!

Venkat, you also opined like I did!!!! Saravanan, your Vani Jayaram write-up is a collector' volume. By any chance, were you auditing at Flakt India or with SBB?
bb, missing a lot of the songs, should catch up soon.
if someone can supply that famous tune - Ramba, Urvasi Menaka, it will complement some of the songs of the day here!!! including the Sirithal; Avaloru Menagai; there are many non-IR songs that Radio SriL played to a IR fans surprise!!!!

Song of the Day: thiruppaarkadalil paLLi koNdaayE from Swami Aiyappan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thiruppaar.rm
- MD: G.Devarajan. Sung by K.J.Yesudas.
- In the Classical Ilayaraja articles (http://www.newtfmpage.com/ci/ ), Lakshminarayanan writes:
The second bhairavi that MSV gave was 'thirupaarkadalil pallikondayae' (swamy iyyappan). What a lovely song! What an unbelievable classical presentation of the essence of bhairavi! What a marvelous rendition by K.J.Yesudoss! You have to enjoy this song atom by atom (anu anuvai rasikanum!) There is no doubt that the ultimate classicism in carnatic music lies with few ragas like bhairavi, thodi, sankarabharanam, begada, karaharapriya and kalyani etc. The ascendency in the scale of knowledge and performance of even the classical musicians would be evaluated by the critics according to the mastery and proficiency that they show in handling these ragas. Such is the weightage that a ragam like bhairavi deems from the purely classical people.
- Was G.Devarajan the MD of the Malayalam version, and MSV the MD of the tamil version?

bb, I do not think MSV was the MD for the Tamizh version. It was Devarajan again and in fact, the tunes were (if I recall) in both versions were the same. For a bhairavi from MSV we probably have to settle for the last chranam in "Atisaya Raagam"!

MSV was not involved in any way with this song. GD did the music in the Thamizh version too. Wonderful song. Sung by nAradhar amidst the clouds in the movie.

Swami Ayyappan showcased Devarajan's mastery as a composer. He scored such unforgettable gems like "Thiruppar kadalil", "Sabari Malayil Vanna ChandrOdayam", "HarivarAsanam" and "SivaperumAne.. Kannaperumane"! While "ThiruppArkadalil" saw the composer literally 'churning out' the essence of Bhairavi raga, "Sabari Malayil" ranks as one of the best Ananda Bhairavis in film music and "Harivarasanam VishwamOhanam" went beyond the boundaries of a film song (Yesudas' rendition of it gives you goosebumps)
"ThiruppAr kadalil" is probably what you'd reccommend to anyone who wants to understand and appreciate Bhairavi raga. Excellent tune and amazing rendition. Thanks bb.
PS: Can someone pl. clarify if "HarivarAsanam" is a traditional devotional song or was it composed for the film? Thanks.

SOTD enbathanala? Unaikandu mayangatha will remain the Bhairavi landmark of TFM.
Swami Ayyappan was one more watchable "God" movies of the 1970s apart from Deivam and Varuvan Vadivelan.Harivarsanam set in Madhyamavathi is a traditional song.Even Ambuli s "Thedugindra Kangalukkul" was a hit those days. The freak "Ponnirathu koopayayi kail edungal" by Ponnusami was ok.

sk - thanks a million for the much clear version in mp3. I strongly recommend it to everyone to listen it again in mp3.
he, he :) Swami aiyappan was the pinnacle of "devotional masala", complete with the entire repertorie of drama, action, etc. Including an attempted rape, melodrama cries and the jigsaw is complete with "thangap pathumai ondru" - dance of Jyothilakshmi-jeyamAlini genre. I remember the valiant attempt my grandma was making to "shield" us kids from this song, offering us murukku, seedai, etc. to sidetrack our attention from the screen. It had(s) the most undesired effort - even today, when I think of Swami..., I think of this dance :)))

Pleasant song - Swami Ayappan had good music from GD - my memories are all those shots of devotees walking towards Sabarimalai - kerala scenery looks so green..
Has anyone seen kaaliambal - starring ramya krishnan and an elephant who is a fan of rajini - watch this movie for childish, mindless devotional masala :-)

OISG,
Agreed, "Unaikkandu mayangAtha pErgaLundO" is definitely a stronger composition in Bhairavi (almost like a Krithi) while ThiruppArkadalil is a slightly lighter number and can especially be recommended to the uninitiated.
Thanks for clarifying that Harivarasanam is a traditional composition. Any idea who wrote it?

I had been to Sabarimalai twice and they have sometime around Deeparadhanai to sing this. Our Guruswami confirmed(a veteran of 21 years then) this.
On Unaikandhu - Sivan true to his Bhajan background has modelled this song on the bhajan "Ubachara mulanu che kona vayyah uragaraja sayana" (pardon my language). The other Bhairavi in Arunagirinathar " Aadavendum mayile" is a step or two behind.
Venkat
I remember Lakshmi in Thangapadhumai ondru sadhiradhudhu -not Jayamalini(I did not go with my Grandma!)-Another great song by Madhuri -who sung only under GD in Tamil.
To all Dfers,
I am meeting the one and only Saravanan tomorrow. He confirms that I will be the first Dfer to meet him personally. It will be my pleasure to present the details of the meeting with one of the brilliant storehouses of TFM information.Boy!I am thrilled!

bb- thanks for this classic. Not sure about the lyricist.
Peter Pan, thanks for mentioning ‘Siva perumaanae—Kanna perumaanae’- it is an amazing PBS-PS song wherein PBS prays to Siva (Anbu vadivaaga nindraai Sivaperumaanae) and PS prays to Krishna (Gokula baalaganae Kanna perumaanae)
Other than Harivaraasanam, another memorable Iyappan song by KJY is ‘Poi indri meiyodu neikkondu ponaal’ in the film Saranam Iyappa-1980.
Isai Nanban- Thanks!! No, I didn’t do any auditing in Flakt or SBB.
OISG – same sentiments here :-)) Naalai indha velai paarthu odi vaa(nga)!
Btw, Madhuri did sing one song for S-G: “Ennanga Sammandhi, eppo namma sammandham’- Kaalam Vellum-1970 (with TMS & PS)
Raj- I guess he’ll find that I am only a chip of the Old (IS Gold) block ;-)
sriram, appadiyae mooku kannadi (or better still boodha kannadi), hearing-aid, walking stick (or would you prefer a wheel chair?) ellaamum vaangittu vara sollunga-punniyamaa pogum! Lollu --hmmm—irukkattum—irukkattum--

bb - unable to recall who wrote thiruppaR kadalil. But harivarasanam was written by Kumbakudi Kulathur Iyer (in one of the old cassettes I have, I had written this in the sleeve - so not an authentic info.). The name is strange. But, I guess this is a village near palaghat.
