Vengayam- yes, that’s the song- and a wonderful one it is!
An imaginative composition by Ramanujam. The song was popular in its time, though the film was a disaster. SPB and PS had many stunning duets in the 70s, and this will rank high in that list—
The song goes:
SPB: Sirithaai--
Andha sirippil oru mogam
Azhaithaai--
Andha azhaippil oru ragam
Kettai--
andha kelviyil oru naanam
koduthaai--
adhai maravaen oru naalum
PS: Sirithaai--
Andha sirippil naan malarndhen
Anaithaai---
Andha naippil naan kanindhen
Kettai---
Andha kelviyil naan magizhndhen
Koduthaai---
Andha karunaiyil ennai marandhen
The lines you mention are the highpoint-- the step-by-step build up and then the graceful descent—Exquisite!
It goes like this:
SPB: Deviyin paal manam
Devanin gopuram
Azhagin---
madiyil--
vasantham--
malarum---
PS: Aththaan--!
A truly memorable song!

Have to add this to the Ramanujam discography:
Srikrishna Arul Padalgal - sung by VJ.

Song of the Day: ini achcham achcham illai from indhira.

- I like this song because of the unconventional structure of the song. Rahman has tried a different approach to this song. The song starts off very slowly, and moves into a chorus-sung feature. There is no pallavi-anupallavi-chararam structure. The entry of tablas is also good, the song moving with minimal percussion before that.
- Vairamuthu's lyrics are also very good in this song, bringing out the theme of the song quite well. The lyrics and the notes of the song are here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/arr/vid_i.txt
- Indira was the directorial debut of Suhasini, tackling a oft-beaten theme of inter-caste clashes. This song was the introduction of Anu Hassan.

Acc. to AS in an interview, malarOdu from Bombay was her first song. http://www.screenindia.com/apr17/music3.htm
But I haven't found any mention that she actually sang that song in any of the websites. Have to check the casette itself. :). (All places mention Sujatha & chorus... athukku thaan AS laayakkunnu ARR mudivu pannittaanO ennavO. :)

BTW, this is one of my fav. ARR songs, precisely for the reasons bb mentioned. Especially the unconventional structure of the song. First time kEttappO "ennadA ezhavu ithunnu" thaan thOniththu. But after repeated listening you get to appreciate the novelty. :). (No, you don't just get used to it as with many ARR tracks. ;)

Catch comments for the last two SOTD;
ponnenpathO is one of those songs which will lurk in your mind for next couple of days once you listen it. It is almost like Internet Explorer > easy to install and use, but hard to get rid of :). SPB idolizes Ghantasala and has told several times he wants to emulate him. But, he is a great mimic too and has impeccably mimiced such varied voices as - Ghantasala, BMK, suruLiRAjan, Malaysia V,...
Sirithal antha siripil is a real great song, long time since I listened it (bb, do you have it?), but I can remember the whole lyrics of this song.
(here is another stanza)
...
mangalac cAndRu mugathinilE
kungumam padum azhakinilE
kaNkalin inba oLiyinilE
eNNam mayangumO
kAthalE OdivA
kAviyam pAdavA
azhakin
madiyil
vasantham
malarum
anbE...
Almost VM kinda lyric :)), but just imagine how refreshing it might have been in those days, before VM industrialized these words.
Today's SOTD - bb is on dot in his comment. This song always left me with a feeling of being unique. Indra came just when I was getting tired of ARR, but this song bought a refreshing change in his approach, but this did not lost long. Duet, Indra, TiRuda tirudA, kizhakkuc chImaiyilE,... was the best time ARR had each one so different from other.

Song of the Day: siriththaai andha sirippil from Ananda Bhairavi.

- The song that people have been talking about in this thread and elsewhere for the past few days. Thanks to Saravanan and SK for this song.
- Sung by PS and SPB. MD is Ramanujam. More on the song here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/20880.03.21.22.html and http://newtfmpage.com/forum/8894.20880.03.21.22.html

bb - (Saravanan, SK) - thanks for letting me listen this after aeons. First time listeners may not appreciate fully well why some of us are raving this (partially due to the audio quality. You can notice throughout the song the judicious use of guitar, veenai, flute, keys and mirdhangam. This song could easily pass as a MSV composition - esp. for the way percussions are handled. These are the kind of songs that keep PS on the top, that unassuming but perfect voice.
Saravanan's what is the age of this song? Guess 1977-78? Was Ramanujam associated with MSV at some time (his songs have a MSV-feel) or is it simply the status of the industry when everyone wanted to create MSV-like compositions? There was a period in Malayalam when every song MUST be sung by KJY or like KJY (approx. 20 years).
If anyone doubts why I compare this so much with MSV - listen again to kaaRRukkenna vEli (SJ, Chorus) and sugamana chinthanaiyil (SPB, SJ, Taxi Driver) for the patterns of composition).

Venkat:
Sri Vidya Creations' Ananda Bhairavi came out in 1978. It starred Ravichandran, KR Vijaya, S Varalakshmi and Jayadevi.
There were 4 songs and all of them are worth remembering. Besides 'Sirithaai andha sirippil', the songs were 'Thamizh vendhan Pandiyanin angam'-VJ, 'Kodi kodi ennam adhu kondu vandha sondham'-TMS-PS and 'Umayavalae Mariamma'- S Varalakshmi.
No, I don't recall ever reading anywhere about Ramanujam's possible association with MSV. I particularly like the veenai after the first line in the Pallavi and the flute after the second line.
I am sorry about the poor quality- but I recorded that song many years back from a small recording center in Virudhunagar. In fact, the audio quality in my cassette is even worse. It was SK who bettered the quality to this extent and coverted it to mp3.

A song that takes me back many years. Even though the audio quality is less than adequate, I am glad this one made the SOTD. A gem of a song indeed. thanks!

wow!
Thanks for the rare gem. Song has a lot of Malayamarutham base, but I think strays out of the raagams at a lot of places too. First (pre-IR) song with a MM base?

Saravanan, - When I said poor audio quality it was in no way to undermine your efforts. It is a great pleasure listening to this song after so many years and I should thank you for this. Your efforts in preserving rare songs and bringing them to limelight is laudable. I first wrote my mail in the morning and now I am back from a day long workshop - amidst tonnes of lasers, Carbon-Carbon stretching and coherent fiber bundles this was ringing in my ear, throughout the days. When you listen to these songs it transports you back in time.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be.

Thanks bb for song. Nostalgia, SPB of the late 70s..what else could one ask for. Aahhh...those days when TV remained a distant dream (thankfully) for Coimbatore-ians and a song's survival depended solely on its 'aural' merits. Tastefully composed interludes and a nice sense of unpredictability. The song has a 'kalyani-ish' start and the pallavi ends with a bhoopalam like feel. The stanzas are predominantly in Valaji or something close to it. Ramanujam's composing maturity is palpable. Wonder what he is doing now !!!
