Sive : Just a selection of raagams that fit in one CD I guess.
Kumar : Poovae Sempoovae is in "Gowri manohari".
Raagam database is http://asp.newtfmpage.com/list.asp

Poovae chem poovae is not strictly in GM - the very first note - Ga3 ma1 pa- poo vae - is a non GM note - GM takes Ga2
I would say it is a combo of GM and Shankarabharanam
- From: IR (@ 4.3.188.45)
on: Thu Mar 1 07:21:48 EST 2001
It also takes N2 in "Nan seidha paavam" - Ga3 ma1 pa dha2 ni2 dha2 ni2 ni2 - which means may be Hari Kambhodi too!

Has anyone heard "pongum kadalosai" by vaani jeyaram from m meenava nanban? i wanted to know the raga.
- From: Neels (@ 203.199.87.3)
on: Sat Mar 3 06:19:16 EST 2001
Vijay,
'Pongum KadalOsai' is VALAJI raga (some call it Valachi).
It is Malayamarudam without the 'Ri' note.
Eg. of Malayamarudam :
'KaNNane Nee vara KAthirunthen' from 'Thendrale ennai thodu'
- From: Vidhya (@ 24.128.190.214)

"Brindhavanamum Nandakumaranum " is Arabhi
- From: IR (@ 4.3.189.238)
on: Sat Mar 3 12:12:45 EST 2001
Brindaavanamum Nandhakumaaranum is in Saama not Aarabhi.
Kaalayum Neeyae is in Basanth bahaar

Neels, actually I asked that question because "pongum kadalosai" sounded close(atleast to me) to "yeh agar dushman dushman" from ham kisise kam nahin(its a qawwali). This song was supposed to be set in Kalavati.
and actually just now I found out from this link that Kalavati is the hindustani equivalent of Valaji;)

Pongum kadalosai has traces of Valaj - but it has tons of other notes - making the job of identifying the exact raga challenging - ofcourse it is definitely not set in "a raga" :-)

Geetha,
"KannALane" I think is a combination of KeeravANi and Sindhu Bhairavi.
Is 'Theertha Karai thaniLe SheNbaga PushpangaLe' by Yesudas (MD: IR) set to Karaharapriya? It looks like a lighter version of this 'gana' ragam. Any idea?

Anybody listened to Karthikraja's dum dum dum?
I understand that there is a separate thread for that but since this is with reg to raga, here goes...
The song in DDD 'ragasiyamai'...which raga is it? When I listened to it first I jumped to the conclusion that it is panthuvarali. But repeated listening has me thinking that it could be malayamaarutham.
It has strong traces of an older song (not sure of movie or composer) 'thendral ennai mutham ittathu...'. So which raagam is the ddd song?

geetha,
this is with reference to the nityasree song i was talking about(quite a long time back)-it is indeed in raagam kaapalini-thanx for the info.i got the casette recently-just to add on-the composer of the song is none other than nityasree's mom herself!

Friends,
What is the raga of one of the Top Tamil film compositions, 'VArAi nee vArAi' (Manthiri KumAri: MD: G. Ramanathan)?
It's seems like such a simple song at first, but has the most complicated twists and surprising turns in the melody.
It has traces of Shuddha DhanyAsi and Abheri. Any idea? Thanks.

Neels - Abheri and sudhdha dhanyasi being janyas of Karaharapriya have the same aaro - but Abheri has dha2 and ri2 in its avarohanam besides SD notes.
This song sounds more like Aabheri and there are some lines which uses Sudhdha dhanyasi's avarohanam (abheri sans dha and ri) which makes it confusing.. but other lines clearly include sa ni2 dha2 pa ma1 ga2 ri2 sa.. I would classify this song under Abheri!
Another twist - if you listen to the line - Oh ho maarudham veesuvadhaale and the interlude after that - I hear the following notes - pa ni2 sa ; ri2 ga2 ri2 sa !!! Now, Abheri does not have Ri in aaro!!
And that is the only line which has ri in the ascending scale!!! I would still classify this under abheri!! and may be the MD did that to add beauty!!! just my thoughts...

IR,
Thanks for the insightful post.
I still marvel at the composition which is so simple, yet so complicated. Only a genius like G.Ramanathan can score such numbers.
Another song from the same film sung by the same duo, 'Trichy Loganathan' and 'Jikki', that comes to my mind is:
'Ulavum Thendral KAtrinilE'. Very western in its style (harmony et al). Sounds like 'Kathanakutoohalam' in Pallavi and in the CharaNam it is some other Raga. The progression of the melody is unpredictable. A classic no doubt! Any idea what the raga is?

Neels - thanks for the song info - great song! I would say it is "based on" Shankarabharanam....
Infact this song reminded me of "An English Note" that Madurai Mani Iyer - a renowned Carnatic Vocalist popularised. That note is set in Shankarabharanam - a lovely piece indeed! These 2 songs sound very similar :-)
The note also includes Ri3, Ma2, Ri1 etc to add beauty. If you observe the line goes something like this: Ga3 Ri3 Ga3 Ma1 Ga3 Pa Ma2 Pa Ri2 Ri1 Ri2 Ga3 .....
All of those non-shankarabharanam notes are notes that immediately precede the Shankarabharana notes... wow indeed a treat to the ears!
May be "Ulavum Thendral Kaatrinile" is also tunded similarly!
Let me know what you think! If you want to listen to the "note" that I mentioned - You could find it at musicindiaonline.com --> Carnatic Vocal --> Madurai Mani Iyer --> First Song
