Sindhu/MS,
It's not pure Sindubhairavi. The charanam looks like Latangi or Sarasangi. Please confirm.

IR,
I have a long-standing doubt. The song 'Pudhu vellai mazhai' from Roja is said to be in Kanada. That's almost ok. But, the last line of charanam takes the notes :
un kathodu yaar sonathu
p g2 s n3 d1 m1 g2 r2
Is this piece in Keeravani, or is this just a mix of foreign notes ?

rajesh - it does sound like keeravani notes :) just that line
Dorai - Kaamavardhini and Kaasi Raamakriya are other names for Panthuvarali/Purya Dhanashree
Ezhu swarangalukkul, Ninnai Charanadaindhen, Thu ithni pyaari ho are a few good ones that come to my mind right away...

S R1 G3 P N2 S S N2 P G3 R1 S-what raagam is this?
Nityashree has sung a song on lord shiva in this raagam...
(the Ma of revathi is replaced by the shankarabharanam Ga)
dr. sk,
remember my old doubt abt. vaasandhi?i got it confirmed-it is a janyam of chaarukesi.
and i still think lathaangi does not have any janyams.....

hello,
Please tell me the raga of Vaseegara..from Minnale.

sindhuja - there is a raga called veena vaadhini in which Nithyasri sings a song called "mangalaalaya maamava deva" - a Naarayana Theerthar composition - that would be similar to the scale you mentioned - but R2 instead of R1 (in other words hamsadhwani scale and n2 instead of ni3)
are you sure about r1? and r u sure it is not a vakra scale(zig zag)

vaseegara seems to be natabhairavish ...

IR,
i'm absolutely sure of the scale-there is R1,and it is NOT a vakra raaga.coz, the song has a chittai-swaram for my confirmation.
as i said,it is revathi with the M1 replaced by G3(the G in shankarabharanam, kalyani etc.)
the song is sabaapathi,umapathi.....

sindhuja,
I looked at the Ragapravaham book for your notes. There are two ragas matching it:
1. lAsaki (janya of vakulAbharaNam s r1 g3 m1 p d1 n2 S): s r1 g3 p n2 S (same avarOhana)
2. pAlini (janya of vakulAbharaNam).
The latter has two scales: Apart from s r1 g3 p n2 S, it also has s r1 g3 d1 n2 S (same avarohana) from a different source.
Most probably your song could be classified as lAsaki.
Since m is missing it could also be janya of nAmanArayani, but I could not find any janya under that.

sindhuja,
The Ragapravaham book lists 69 ragas for latAngi.
Also the book "Ragas in Carnatic Music" mentions that latAngi has large number of janya ragas.
Almost all 69 janyas look to be very rare. In fact I have heard only two janyas before - skanda manorama and hamsalatha (mentioned in Ragas in Carnatic music with only one known composition).
Some janyas are: dAnaranjani, dosharahitaswarUpi, govindadhanyasi, Adan, Veeran etc!
There is a composition "Sreeanathanamu" by Thiruvotriyur Thyagaraja in Ratnakanti (janya of latAngi - s r1 g3 m2 p n3 S - S n3 p m2 g3 r1 s).
Hope this helps.

reena,
every raaga is defined by a specific set of swaraas-by knowing(or hearing, rather) the swaraas the raaga is found.if we are too familiar with a raaga, just by listening to a piece of music in that raaga we can recogonise it(i.e without thinking abt. the swaraas present in the raaga etc.)anyone can appreciate music, but understanding it has to be intutional only.

hi is there any relationship between the raaga of the song chinnakkannan azhaikkiran (i.e. reethigowlai) and the raaga of the song paadum podhu naan thendral kaatru paruva mangayo thennankeetru. Because when i start singing chinna kannan azhaikkiraan after finishing its pallavi i tend to sing yellagaL illa ulagam yen idhayamum adhu pol nilavum (an extract from paadum pothu naan thendra kaatru's charanam.
Is this thought worth it or its a vague, arbitrary jumping without having any base?
Pundits please clarify as you know that i'm musically not sound.

The Nithyashree song you talk of is KA [PALINI] which is in the Ragam PALINI - sounds a bit like Revathi indeed. The composer has incorporated the name of the song into the composition. Vasu got it!

Yenge Enathu kavithai is composed in Latangi Raga. Especially the Charanam "Malai Anthikallil Manathin Sandhugalil..." is pure Latangi

Dorai/Sindhuja: Enge Enadhu Kavidhai is predominantly in SINDHUBAIRAVHI, the choruses are in LATHANGI, with a mix of SARASANGI.....It ends in the Arohanam of KEERAVANI, stopping before the top Sadjam.
