This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

PART 41
SOME FILMS OF 1964 and 1965
Although KVM had 24 films in 1963, he only had 6 movies in 1964 and 13 movies in 1965, making a total of 19 in two years. And I must admit that not all his movies in these two years had good songs. Therefore I am selective of the films and the songs. Readers may wish to differ on taste.
AAYIRAM ROOBAAI (1964)
This is an aerage movie where Gemini Ganesan, MR Radha, Savithri and Ragini play the leading role. The songs are about average too.
P. Suseela sings a sad song picturised on Ragini:
Nilavukku Nizhalundu
PB Sreenivas and P.Suseela sing this duet song:
Paarthaalum Paarthen-Naan
Unnai pola Paarkkale
Kettalum Ketten
Un Pechai Pole Ketkalai
P. Suseela sings this song for Savithiri:
Aanaaku Anthamadam
S. Janaki sings this sad song
Amma Ille Appa Ille
PB Sreenivos and Suseela sing this song for Gemini and Savithiri in a train scene.
Patpodi
This film did not do well, and the songs were of average score.
ALLI (1964)
Sowkar Janaki and SSR act in this average movie. There is only one song that is worth mentioning. It is sung by P.Suseela for Sowkar Janaki. The song goes:
Unnai Naan Ariven
ULLASA PAYANAM (1964)
SSR, Vijayakumari and MR Radha act in this average movie. There are good songs here. A rare film where S. Janaki sings in full.
TMS sings this song for SSR:
Poottiya Manathai Thiranthuvidu
Poda Poda Paithiyame is an other solo by TMS
Paartha Kankal Naangu is a duet by TMS and S. Janaki.
Sithira Penne Sithira Penne is a song by S. Janaki and group.
Vanathil Aayiram is another solo by S. Janaki
IDHAYA KAMALAM (1965)
This is a movie that capitalised on the popularity of Malaysia Ravichandran. KR Vijaya acted in double role. TS Palaiya and Rukumani too appeared in important roles. Sheela too acted in an important role, and soon ended up marrying Ravichandran on a temporary basis. This film would be another important mark that KVM has left for posterity.

Nee Pogum Idamellam Naanum Varuven Po Po Po is a song that captured the hearts of many when the song was released. This was wellsung by PBSreenivos and PSuseela. Accordion and piano are well used with semi modern and yet sweet touch.
“Melathai Mella Thattu Maama” is adance song well sung by S.Janaki. S. Janaki was getting lesse chances around this time, when compoared to other singers.
“Unnai Kaanaatha Kannum Kannalla” by Psuseela was composed very well and picturised on the spirit of KR Vijaya. This song is played many times in this film. Somehow KVM has composed a tune that moves one to the very core of his heart, given the uplifting tune. A few lines as far as I remember:
Unnai Kaanaatha Kannum Kannalla
Unnai Ennatha Nenjum Nenjalla
Nee Sollatha Sollum Sollalla
Nee Illamal Naanum naanalla
Nee Ilaamal Naanum Nanalla
Ingu Neeyoru Paathi naanoru Paathi
Ithil Yaar Pirinthaalum Vethanai Paathi
Kaalangal maarum
Kaathchikal maarum
Kathalin Munne Neeyum naanum Veralla
(UNNAI)
Oru Deivamillamal Kovilumillai
Oru Kovillaamal Deepamumuillai
Nee Enthan Koyil
Naan Angu Deepam
Theivathin Munne Neeyum naanum Veralla
(UNNAI)
“Malarkal Nanainthana Paniyale” is one of the best songs of P. Suseela and one of the best works of KVM. KVM told me this was his favorite song.
At a time when PB Seenivas used to be one of the male singers in any film, Ithaya Kamalam had only PB Sreenivos as the only male singer. This was observed and expressed by many criticsw when the film was released. Critics also did not fail to mention that this was a “complete movie”-Good artistes, good story lines, good colour, good outdoor shooting, good lyrics, good music and good songs. Another impact that KVM has left.
KAAKKUM KARANGAL (1965)
AVM sedlom used KVM and this was one of that rare films. SSR, SV Subbiah, Sivakumar, Nagesh and Vijayakumari act in this movie. Some of the best songs of KVM are also found in this movie. Following Neengatha Ninaivu, we can see Vali working with KVM once again. All the songs are by Vali, except one.
TMS and PS sing this love duet:
Nyayiru Enbathu Kannaga
Thingal Enbathu Pennaga
Sevvaai Kovai pazhamaaga
Sernthu Nadanthathu Azhagaaga
The same pair sing this song:
Alli ThanduKaaleduthu
Adi Mel Adi Eduthu
Sinna Kannan Nadakkayile
Sithirangal Enna Seiyum
A Hindi tune -Rasikku Balma from the film Chori Chori is sung by P. Suseela as follows:
Thirunaal Vanthathu
Ther vanthathu
Oorvalam Varukinra Naal Vanthathu
Oda Mudiyaamal Ther Ninrathu
P. Suseela sings one more song and this is the only song by Kannadasan:
Akka Akka Akka Akkakkaa
Aasai Aasak Aasai Vanthiukkaa
Aasayodu Mayakkam Vanthirukka
Poombudi poombudi Poombudi …..
There is a song composed for a Romeo and Juuilket theme and scene, sung by AL Ragavan and LR Eswary. The song is:
ALR - Azhagiya Rathiye Amaravathiye
Adiyen Thodalaama?
Thottu Thottu
Aasaiyai Sollalaama?
LRE- Anbaana Pathiye Ambigapathiye
Avasarappadalaama
Pattuppattu Kariyam Kedalama
This film was well received for the storyline and the songs.
ANNAAVIN AASAI (1965)
We have seen that Balaji went for MSV only in the later days. But his debut was in Annavin Aasai, where he used KVM. This film had Gemini Ganesan, Savithri and Balaji as the leading stars. Here we once again see Vali working with KVM, along with Kannadasan. The songs in this film are still some of the best of KVM.
TMS, AL Ragavan, and P. Suseela sing this all time famous song written by Kannadsan:
Kovilile Veedu Katti
Goipurathil Koodu Katti
Kudi Irukkum Paravaikale
Konjam Sollungal
P. Suseela sings this melodious song written by Vali:
Pooppol Malarai Thottu Vaithaan
Punnagayil Then Sottu Vaithaan
Paarvayiule Ilam Sittu Vaithaan-Ithai
Padaithavan Thaniye Vittuvaithaan…
There is another wonderful song, accompanied by heavy accordian music, written by vali and sung by PB Seenivas and P. Suseela. It goes:
Paatezhthattum Paruvam
Isai Isaikkattum Ithayam
Paadi Sellattum Azhagu
Paarthu rasikkattum Aasai
TMS and P Suseela sing this song by Kannadsan;
Inbam enbatu enna Enroruvan Iraivanai Kettanaam
Antha Iraivan Thanakkum Theriyathena En
Thalaivanai Kettanaam
Thalaivan Thalaiviyai Kettanaam
The same song is sung by Suseela in a sad tone, with a slight change of words:
Thunbam Enbathu Enne Enroruvan
Iraivanai Kettannaam
Antha Iraivan Thanakkum Theriyathena En
Thalaivanai Kettanaam-
Thalaivan Thalaiviyai Kettanaam
PADITHA MANAIVI (1965)
This film has SSR, Vijayakumari, G Varalechumy, MR Radha and SV Ranga Rao in the leading role. There are five songs of which two could be said to be good songs, perhaps to my taste.
One is a solo by TMS:
Anbe Un Peyar Thalaivi
Azhage Un Peyar Mangai
Arive Un Peyar Kankal
Amaippe Nee Enthan Manaivi
The other song is a duet by TMS and P. Suseela:
Antha Mugamaa Intha Mugam
Ithil Entha Mugamthaan Sontha Mugam
SINNANJIRU ULAKAM (1965)
There are a few average songs in this average movie. The songs that are worth mentioning are as follos:
“Manasirukkanum manasirukkanum Pachai Pullaiyaattam” by TMS and P. Suseela
“Sirippen Sirippen” by Seergazhi Govindarajan and LR Eswary.
“Vitta Kuraiyo Illai Thotta Kuraiyo” by P. Suseela.
ENGA VEETTU PEN (1965)
There are few good songs in this average movie.
P Suseela sings this song:
Kalkale Nillungal Kangale Sollungal
P B Seenivas sings this sad solo
Sirippu Paathi Azhugai Paathi
Sernthathallavaa Manitha Jathi
There is a very good duet by TMS and P. Suseela
Theiva Malarodu Vaitha Manam Narumanam
Anbu Malarodu Vaitha Manam Thirumanam
Suseela and group sing a song that goes Karthikai Vilakku
Jamunarani sings a comedy song for Manorama, and the song is
“Kattana Chittu Onnu” based on an old folk song tune.

chinnanjiru malarai marandhuvidaathey - if this was used for the same situation as in Deedar, it's a song showing the children growing up.
Sukumari - Manisegaran sir, unga vcr/vcd playeril sampoorna ramayanathai oda vittu chinna vayathu Seethai yaarunnu paarunga. Is't that Sukumari, perhaps in her debut? She is shown as Seethai until Raman and Seethai reach Ayodhya. After that, we see NTR and Padmini.

The hindi original is:
bachpan ke din bhula na dena
(don't forget childhood days)
aaj hasen kal rula na dena
(you laugh today, do not weep tomorrow)
I believe this is a version of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte though I could be thinking of Babul.

In Thulasi Maadam these two songs are by Ka MU Sheriff:
Aadum Mayile
Chithirai Maatha Nilavinile
kik,
Yes I saw Samboorna ramayanam on TV and I guessed it must be Sukumari. You have confirmed it.
Thanks
