This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

Mani Sir, thank you again for giving so many details. You have touched upon some excellent songs. 'Parakkum paravaigal neeye' is among my favourite PBS songs. Jamunarani's humming is really bewitching and enhances the beauty of the composition.
Similarly 'Malarai parithaai thalayil vaithaai'-( Lyrics by Trichy Thyagarajan- he also wrote the lyrics for 'Ennai paarthaal parigasam' and 'Emaatha therinjavan sigavaasi', apart from 'Sindhithaal sirippu varum').
LRE's voice sounds so young and fresh in this song. Her lines 'Manathai parithen uyiril vaithen, uravai pirithaal enge selven-Paruvathil sirippai kuraithirundhen, sirithidum urimaikku kaathirundhen-iruvarin kanavum palithiduma, perumayai sirumai jeyithiduma-' are memorable.
'Ponnum porulum' too is a lovely song.
Thanks again for bringing back to memory such wonderful songs!
Some minor points:
1.The MS Rajeswari solo in 'Kavitha' is not 'Oor irandum'- it goes like this:
'Oor irundhum veedillai
uravirundhum thunai illai
ondrume puriyavumillai
vaazhvadhum yenendre theriyavillai-'
A pathos filled song, sung exprssively by MSR.
2.That 'Thithikkum thamizhile' song - I feel it is an Irukuralisai, and not a solo by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi. Perhaps her sister Jayalakshmi sang along with her. I love the description of thamizh in the lines 'Kaththum kadal pirandha kaalathile pirandhum kanni paruvathodu innum irundhu varum thiththikkum thamizhile--' -Beautiful lines!
3. Small correction in the lyrics:
-Oruthi oruvanai'-
'MARAIKKA muyandren mudiyavillai'
-Miaw miyaw poonaikutti'-
'Avar azhai SOLLADI sellakutti'

Manisegaran, interesting titbit on Padmini's comeback. How did she do in this comeback? Did she go on to do more movies?
Also, I am surprised that Kannadasan let go of a song with faulty lyrics, hoping that the tune will compensate.

Thanks for enriching the discussion. I was looking for the lines of Malarai Parithaai, and was not able to get it from memory. So decided to post first. Now the song is complete. There are many who think LR Eswary is not a good singer. I feel she is one of the best around. UNfortunately it is the MDs who give her medoicre songs. She has left some wonderful gems, including this that you have pointed out. I am happy you share the same sentiments of on her songs.
An old book of Suratha says Thithikkum Thamizhile is by Soolamangalam Rajalechumy. I myself heard the song a few times only. When Azhagu Nila was broadcast, this eaagerly awaited song was cut off. Anyway as I had expressed earlier, many written documents do not convey the gospel truth. It is auditors like you and a few others who are putting aright what had been distorted by the cine people. Thanks for straightening some points.

Padmini continued to act and had some chances.

Thanks for getting back to continue on KVM. The
recent material provided interesting info!
'endha oor endravanE' is a very good song. Some
people, however think that it is an ordinary formula song. :(
bb:
If you are referring to 'thookannaankuruvi koodu'
song, I don't think the lyrics were faulty.. they
were just casual.. with no particular ideas in those lines.
For example, the song has one part which goes as..
kooraikkudisai naduvilE andha padukkaiyai pOttu
oru kuththuviLakkai Eththi vachchu oru kOlaththai pOttu
aara amara machchaanOdu padikkaNum paattu
aanaagappatta rAjA kooda mayangaNum kEttu
adhai vittu..

Isn't Chandrakantha (acts double role) the heroine
in thuLasi mAdam? I think V Gopalakrishnan is
the other hero in that movie.

I thinks Chandrakantha acts, as you rightly pointed out. Before Kalakoyil film was screened in an open field in a plantation settlement the song "Maiyai Thottu Ezhuthiyavar" was screened as a trailor. I think I saw Chandrakantha and a little bit of AVM Rajan.
Thanks.

Mani Sir,
I went thru your latest post just now. Wealth of information, as usual! Thanks.
Some thoughts:
1.Vaanambadi (directed by Go.R. Nathan?) was the remake of a Bengali film (Sesh Parish)
2.After watching ‘Ezhai pangaalan’, Kamaraj is said to have remarked that the film would have become a hit had MGR been the hero.
3.‘Konjam thallikkanum’- Kadavulai kanden featured Chandrababu with Sukumari. Sukumari wore a shirt and pant in this song and matched the stylish steps of Chandrababu with amazing grace!
4.I vaguely remember that there was a solo by MS Rajeswari (beginning with ‘Udhayasooriyan’) in Kaithiyin Kaadhali.
5.Yaarukku Sondham- Chandrababu’s song ‘Ennai theriyalaiya, innum puriyalaya, kuzhandhai poley en manasu, en vazhiyo endrum oru dhinusu’- good lyrics by Maruthakasi.
6.‘Deal deal deal’- Jamunarani scintillates in this fast-paced breezy number- especially her intoxicating voice captivates in the lines ‘Enna vittu, en kanna vittu’.
7.Isn’t Chinnanjiru malarai by both PS and LRE?
8.Tulasi Maadam- featured AVM Rajan, V Gopalakrishnan, Saradha and Chandrakantha in a double role. It was a meandering tale- Chandrakantha is AVMR’s wife. She develops tuberculosis and so her mom-in-law sends her out. The other Chandrakantha, a Christian, feels sorry for her and takes her place in AVMR’s house, while the sick one goes to the other’s house. All sorts of confusion follow! Finally all is well that ends well.
KVM gave excellent songs:
S Janaki gave two very good solos:
1.Kalyana sappada podum munne
2.Ammadiyo athanukku
The SJ-Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi song (Maiyai thottu ezhuthiyavar) is not a thalattu- Both sing thinking about their lover.
AVM Rajan sings in his first night: (TMS): Chithirai maadha nilavinile-
V Goplakrishnan, being puzzled by the strange behaviour of Chandrakantha (he doesn’t realise that she is someone else) sings ‘Aadum mayile aattam engey’ (TMS)

Saravanan:
Yes, chinnanjiru malarai maRandhuvidAdhE has PS also.
A very sweet song indeed.
Looking at the beats in that song, it appears
to be a song where two friends are going on some
horse cart or something. I wonder whether the
picturization of the song is that way.

Something away from KVM and his music. bb...its for u.. Mani Sir... excuse me for the diversion..!
As I was a "wild" fan of the ever-awesome actress Padmini, I would like to give the "bada" list of films which acted after she came back from her marriage. The come-back was with big hit “Chithi” with MR Radha and Gemini Ganesan.
Around 60’s and 70’s, Padmini acted as Lead or a Main character in all the films. She never appeared in a mediocre role at all till she settled in USA.
Just before her marriage:
------------------------------
Mannathi Mannan (MGR)
Deiva piravi (Sivaji)
Raja Desingu (MGR)
Meenda Sorgam (Gemini)
Rajabhakthi (Sivaji)
Arasilankumari (MGR, Nambiar)
Punar jenmam (Sivaji)
Sri Valli (Sivaji)
After marriage:
------------------
Chithi (MRR, Gemini)
Rani Samyuktha (????)
Senthaamarai (Sivaji)
Vikramadityan (MGR)
Kattu Roja (SSR)
Veeranganai (???)
Kaliarasi (???)
Thaaye unakkaga (Sivaji – Guest)
Saraswathi Sabatham (Sivaji)
Iru Malargal (Sivaji)
Pesum Deivam (Sivaji)
Thiruvarutselvar (Sivaji)
Kankanda deivam (S V Subbaiah)
Paalaadai (Sivaji)
Thillana Mohanaambal (Sivaji)
Kuzhandhaikkaaga (No hero)
Guru Dakshinai (Sivaji, Balaji)
Vilayattu Pillai (Sivaji)
Vietnam Veedu (Sivaji)
Rikshawkkaaran (MGR, Manohar)
Iru Dhuruvam (Sivaji)
Paanchali (Gemini and others)
TherOttam (Gemini)
Edhir Kalam (Gemini)
Thirumaal perumai (Sivaji)
PeN Jenmam (Major)
Thenum paalum (Sivaji)
Kulama Gunama (Sivaji)
Thirumagal (Gemini)
Annai Velankanni (Guest)
Aadhi parasakthi (Guest)
Appa Tata (Gemini)
In late 80’s, she again came back and gave a super hit as “Paati” Poove Poochooda Vaa (Malayalam and Tamil versions) Also same good movies like "Thaaikku oru thalaattu (Sivaji)", "Lakshmi vandhachu (Sivaji)", "Aayiram kaNNudayaaL"
I think she can act even now with more maturity…!

Thulasi madam songs -were all done by Kavi.Ka.Mu.sherif?

Saravnan,
Thanks for the information on Thulasi Maadam. I hope I can get a copy of the movie in video or VCD. The song Aadum Mayile was not available in malaysia-both Radio Malaysia and the recording shops. Finally it was imported from overseas. AS soon as it was made available I recorded it.
Vanambadi is based on a Bengali Novel. Screenplay and dialogue by Valamburi Somanathan.GR Nathan directed and was in charge of filming as well.
I am not aware of Kamaraj's statement. Its a vast field and we all share different information in pieces. But I dont see any MGR formula in this average movie. Only one thing is clear. You can easily straighten the tail of the dog, but can never predict the success of the movie.
I agree on Sugumari's versatile movements, matching Chandrababu. SHe dances with him well in Eppo VAchikkalaam in Panda PAsam too. She comes inf Vaarai En THozhi Vaarayo song too. A good dancer anyway.
Deel Deel Deel, as you have pointed out is a good song, by Panju Arunasalam.
Chinnanjiru Malarai is fist sung by LR Eswary and P Suseela. The second version is a solo by TMS. A remake of Deedar.
Thanks again for enriching, and filling the gaps.

Saravanan,
Yes, There is a song UDayaSooriyan by MS Rajeswary in Kaithiy9in Kaathali. Coincidentally written by TN UDhayasooriyan. P. Suseelas ings Rajavum Vanthiduvaar by Maruthakazi. A very average movie.
Thanks
