A JOURNEY WITH K.V. MAHADEVAN

This is an effort, in a modest way, to trace the great contributions of KVM to the Tamil Film Music. As Tamil Film songs originate from the Tamil films, I am aslo taking the liberty of discussing the background of the films where KVM had comsposed- with the intention of adding spice. I believe this article would serve as a nostalgic tonic to the fans of old songs.

  FILMS OF 1962
  
  In 1962 KVM had composed good music for a number of movies.
  
  SENGAMALATH THEEVU
  
  Ananthan, Rajshree, Ramadas, Kallapart Nadarajan, MR Radha and a few others star this film. The songs are still ringing in many of our hearts. The famous songs are:

  Panju Arunasalam was an assistant to Kannadasan. There is a song that Panju Arunasalam composed all by himself when Kannadasan’s arrival was delayed. Yet Kannadasan made some corrections in the song sung by Soolamangalam Rajalechumy and group.

  SOME FILMS of 1963
  The year 1963 seem to be very hectic for KVM as he had scored music for many movies, compared with the previous years. There were 24 movies to his credit. We will see the non Sivaji and Non MGR Movies

  Vanambadi is a movie where Kannadasan himself had a share in the production. It was released as Kannadasan Productions and so one could imagine the quality of the lyrics. SSR, Devika (doublke role) Muthyuraman, Sagasranamam TR Ramachandran TR Rajakumari, Pusphalatha, Master Kamalahasan and Jothilechumy are among the main stars.

  This song was a rare treat to the lovers of Tamil poem. A Kaviyarangam was staged in this song scene. And KVM composed the most appropriate tune to strike a good balance.

  NEENGATHA NINAIVU
  Neengatha Ninaivu is the remake of Deedar in Hindi. The Tamil version is starred by SSR, Vijayakumari, Kalyana Kumar, Pushapalatha , A Ramarao and others. KVM gave some of his best in this film: This is the film where Vali composed for KVM for the first time. But somehow Vali and KVM were not comfortable with each other in this film and after. They started to be comfortable only from Pesum Deivam.

  This is a song with such simple words, and yet with deep meanings. A talented and able poet could compose to any situation, any given tune and in any age. Kanndasan has left this song for all future poets to follow. But we are yet to get songs of this equivalence in play of words. (The closest I could think of is Paal Thamizh paal by Vali in Ragasiya Police 115)

  Background to the above song:
  
  Padmini is the longest acting star among the Truvangoor sisters. From a dancer she became a heroine and acted in many movies. When Padmini got married she went off to the USA for a long time. She even announced that she wanted to settle in the states. While she was away, Saroja Devi was shining in Tamil cinema. She produced silver jubilee runs with MGR, Gemini and Sivaji. She was the dream queen for that short period of time. Suddenly Padmini reappeared after three years and wanted to act. She was booked to act, this time with an average actor at that time, who had few cinema chances. It was SSR. The film was Kaattu Roja. The cine circle started to hiss around that Padmini had aged and she had to take leave for good. But this went to the ears of Padmini who took it as a challenge. She was determined to prove her youthfulness. Kannadasan wrote a song for Padmini, shooting questions at Saroja Devi who was at the height of her glory. The song is:
