i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

You are right!
Dont worry my boy!You have got plenty up there, to ransack.
Yesterday I saw a trailer Kamasrasu. From the looks it appeared to be a Telugu dubbing and by no means would add pride to Kamaraj.I saw one more sloka getting raped. This time by the Rendu Tune Rajkumar! Can someone stop this MUSICK Bandit!

I am just posting this from a thread started by Logic Gates. Found it interesting.
"Lets not brand MDs like ARR & IR as copy cats. They have not blatantly lifted any tune till now to my knowledge. Ive seen lotsa posts saying that 'this song has traces of this', 'the beginning of that song resembles this'....blah blah !! IMHO, these dont amount to lifting. Everytime they compose a new song, they sincerely try and are committed to compose an original song. This effort is what matters most to me. They just dont cheat ppl. Somehow resemblences creep in, but they dont do it on purpose.( MDs like Deva, SAR , Sirpi etc dont fall into this category ).
i bet i can come up with comments like 'the arrangement is similar to xyz song', 'the rhythm pattern sounds like xyz song', 'the background beats and loop resembles xyz song' 'it sounds similar to a song based on the same raaga' etc...for any song. The point is that, even if u sincerely and honestly try, there is bound to be some resemblance..The simple reason being 'Music existed in this universe even before life evolved. Whatever ppl do is just a permutation & combination of whatever is eternally existing'. Millions of musicians had existed in this world before any of our present day MDs were even born. They grew up listening to a variety of music and hence even if they consciously want to avoid resemblance, sub-consciously it will some how creep in. Now to compose original music against all these odds is in itself an achievement leave alone delivering hits and soul-stirring music."

'aerumayileri viLaiyaadum mugam ondru'(umaRamanan and SL) was set to the 'maanguyile poonguyile seidhi onnu keLu' tune

Irreverence?
But according to Gangai Amaran(who was the director of the Magnum Opus Karagattakkaran) Manguyile was inspired by Erumayilerivilayadu Mugam Onru.
MSV, largely inspired by SDB's "Roop Thera Mastana" has done "Nee Ninaithal" in Nilave Nee Sakshi (LRE duet).Aradhana's Tamil version "Sivagamiyin Selvan"'s "Etthanai Azagu"(SPB) was a real hot number, a must listen for SPB fans.
Also RDB's Ek Mein our ek Thu (Khel Khel Mein) was brought to Tamil by MSV in Shankar Salim Simon.Vanthale Oru Magarasi ..(Vijayakumar Singing)
Sappuna Mera tutu Gaya - Copied by chandra Bose in MadhuraGeetham as "Kannan Enge?Kannen Enge?"
Can someone find out the Original of the interludes in the Sangili song " Nallorgal Vazvai kakka"?

I feel IR was indeed deeply inspired by the original "Gori thera" (KJY) when he composed "En manatha Pari koduthu" in Ullam Kavar Kalvan .I also think that this movie was a remake of Chitchor. The Tamil version is sung by P Jayachandran.
But the the KJY song was certainly at the back of his mind in "Poojaiketha Poovithu".It is certainly not a copy but a real inspiration; and a very good one.

O_IS_G,
Ek Mein our ek thu is a blatant lift from a nursery rhyme("Happy and you go").
RDM is very good at lifting and he took it from a popular nursery rhyme.

Karthik S:
I saw in your I2FS page that "Minnalai Pidiththu" song was inspired by some English song.
Have you listened to an old tamil song
" Chinna chinna izhai pinni pinni vara
chiththirai kaiththari chelaiyadi - namma
thennattil ennaalum , kondaadum velaiyadi"
song. I forgot the film. But, its a popular one. Poeple here can definitely identify.
I thing Mani sharma blatantly copied this song into "Minnalai pidiththu".

Vidyasagar - Having given the best for 2001 should come under scrutiny.(Yaravathu Vazhndal piddikathey!)
I .Aathu Meetula - Gramathu Adyayam (IR)
thoranam Adidum-Vetrikku Oruvan(IR)
Thamara poovukkum -Pasumpon(vidyasagar)
II.Pullanguzhal Mozhi -Urum Uravum (Shankar-Ganesh)
Dhinhindara -Poovellam Un Vasam(vidya sagar)
I am geeting the feeling that, despite his talents,Vidya sagar is not able deliver Original stuff in a sustained manner. He sounds tired in Thavasi songs.I did hear the a song with a similar orchestra with that of the title song during my West African trip last week.
Also i heard a new song which was a blatant copy of "Something,Something" (Anjali).Particularly the humming "chu chu chu".Can anyone throw light? My poor french prevented me from getting the details from the Cab driver.

"But according to Gangai Amaran(who was the director of the Magnum Opus Karagattakkaran) Manguyile was inspired by Erumayilerivilayadu Mugam Onru. "
I hope there is no mischief here but just misinformation. This was disclosed by IR himself in a concert in SriLanka. See www.raaja.com. According to IR himself, it is in the same metre but different tune. He also mentions another song 'rAththiriyil pooththirukkum thAmarai' also as being in the same metre.
We should keep this thread to pure copy and to some extent inspiration and not comment on the MD himself. As for IR, there are quite a few resources on raaja.com to understand not only the man's music but also the man himself. If you want to comment on IR or another MD it should be done in another thread.

Just wondering,How can one tell a song is being
copied without using the mds name? :)
I dont think anyone commented poorly on the MD (ofcourse commenting on Arr is not counted here, for many he is worthless musician , uses loops (wow!) and he has spolit tamil music)
Most of the postings on copying by these musical "Sherlocks" here are statments with very very minimal or no musical knowlege. When some one comments on ones creativity, knowlege about that subject is very important. Being a fan is different for being a critic. Defining copy by mere ears cannot be accepted, that kills the spirit of music listening.
I really wonder when peopele say beats are copied, and the famous word "LOOPs" are lifted
do they really know it techincally to comment on a technical aspect of music.?.
what is a copy and what is an inspiration, this is not defined any where, cannot be defined.
Making commercial music in indian film is a big game for survial. I am happy still our mds are sticking to their job most of them really work hard to show their talent, Inspite of lots of pressure from various level during a film production.
This thread is going in the wrong direction.
Kutram kandupidithu "name" vangum pulvargal.
thats all.

On the Gangai amaran quote i certainly remember seeing it .Mischief or Misinfo wont last in a forum where you see some real BIG CATS on the prowl. If required i can sign a declaration!May be it has something to do with Amaran's terms with Raja.
Music apart from harmony and melody includes sincerity and honesty. Some MD tomorrow, may use the Thyagaraja 's Jagadha Nandha" or Vivaldi's " The Four seasons" and claim it as his original work.We have come across people like that in the Indian music scene. There may be some heartburns when your Idol gets the stick for lifting.
I am of the opinion that this a cleansing excercise in a small way.It also makes people listen more. There is a practical case. These bombay brats took the all old RD Burman / Kishore songs and did a remix.True, the remix filth sold a hundred thousand copies. But it generated tremendous sales for the original after a while. The original always stands out.
But for Sirpi's theft and its subsequent discovery i would have never listened to the Great NFAK.By mistake i was thanking Sirpi when the credit should actually go to the discoverer.
At times you do get the feeling that the search and discovery proves no point;my admiration for SDB has come down a bit after listening to Beethovan.these are the neagative aspects. But i got a new, much bigger world of Beethovan,Bach and Tchaikovsky. I have not stopped listeneing to Kagaz ke Phul thateither.
Same criticisms were levelled against CHO;but i feel Thuglaq has sharpened the ideas, judgement and political debates amongst ordinary men. This is what a real critic can contribute to the society. You do come across half-baked men like Subbudu at times.Just ignore them.
