IR,
I have a collection in which he plays swarams without BOW for arnd 10 mins....itukku enna solrathu....some people call konashtai, some people call it talent...some people call it Janaranjagam(regarding physical konashtai.....athu ellarumthaan panraanga TNS oda Jaangiri pizhiyara style,Sanjay Subhramanyathoda Vanthi edukkara Style,Unnikrishnanoda Thottil aatra style...ithukku ellam enna solveenga?)....but definitea Kunnakudi's depiction of raaga doesn't sound traditional at all....avar vaasikara Kharaharapriyakkum kaalangaalama irukkara karaharapriyakkum sema difference irukku....neenga enna nenaikareenga?

Ram - you should listen to Kunnakudi's playing in the early 1970's (cassettes or recordings) and compare it with his style of playing today. YOu would know the difference - avarum oru kaalathula adhe karaharapriya va karaharapriya va vaasichavar thaan - ippo thaan ka ra ha ra pri ya nnu pichchu pudungi peththu kozhappi vaasikkaraar - what I meant to say was - he is a violinist and he practices gymnastics on the stage - stage manners nnu oNNu irukke - he turns around and talks to a lady/winks at her, then turns his back to keep tala for the khanjira guy facing him, idhellam simply not accepted :-) TNS, Sanjay mannerisms are not dramatized, adhu part of their singing - but Kunnakudi on the other hand makes it a point to act it out :-)

I was reading more about Andhi Mazhai stuff at Ilayaraja's music site:
http://www.raajangahm.com/music2.html
The guy somewhat concurs with Sindhuja and MS (in keeping with "namba" IR's philosphy of yeverybadi is right"
thala suthudu pa ... anyway I will try comparing with Rahman's "Ramaa yeh kya hua" and "Ruthu aa gayi re" and other Puriya Dhaneshri numbers to see correspondence in "feel" with Panthuvaraali.

Anyway, listen to Puriya Dhanshri at:
http://www.itcsra.org/sra_raga/sra_raga_that/sra_raga_that_links/raga.asp?raga_id=18
then compare it with phrases in Hariharan singing "Rama yeh kya hua"
or Lata's "Mere sau sanson" - very strong correlation ... still trying to find it with Andhi Mazhai (seems to be a drought even though I have left Madras).

Sittu Parakkuthu Kuthaalathil in film Nilave Mugham Kattu is KeeravaNi I guess...(not sure)

So the whole point is no one can be sure of the intended rAgam other than the composer himself. This conclusion seems pretty much obvious(and my query(as to how to find out what the intended rAgam is) seems extremely silly now).AnA ivlo chinna vishiyathai kooda inda mara mandaila yetharthukku IR daan varavendirikku!!!!IR must be very patient to answer these silly doubts!
But,now remains another question which MS asked, and which has been my doubt too-y is it that only some rAgAs (or rather some songs) sound
like more than 1 rAgam(i.e shruthi bhedam is prominent)? If u take, say,Tenral vandu ennai todum,it is very, very clearly hamsanAdam(and not Gambheeranattai, which is 1 of its shruti bhedams)Here all our intuitions work the same way?:-)(this song including D2 which is not actually there in hamsanAdam is another matter-pl. don't bring in THAT here). So,what is it that makes only some songs sound as more than 1 rAgam?
The very first part of the prelude in andhi mazhai goes like-Pa Sa Ri Pa Sa Ri Pa Sa Ri Pa....
Is it coz of the prominent occurance of Sa and Pa that does not lead to any confusion?(OLaralaa?IR,mannichudunga!)

Ram..."Sittu parakudhu kuthaalathil" from nilave mugam kaatu is MMG i guess. Regarding 'Manguyile Poonguyile' - dunno the intended raga.

DRB,
I guess Ilayaraja's "Ennai Thodarndhu" from the obscure film "Maamiyaar Veedu" is the last & latest Lathangi in TFM. :-)

Pinna inge namba yennatha kizhichindu irukom? :)
Still, all these discussions are helping me along with my learning and appreciating how much there is to figure out beyond just banging a few familiar tunes on the keyboard.

SIndhuja :-) I am not sure if I have a proper explanation for that. May be because of the way the song itself is tuned? May be because of the supporting instruments playing multiple chords/tunes?? (I dont know much about chords to even talk about that!)

Ok..I guess it is time to move on to the next topic :-) (pOdhum shruthi bEdhak kodumai :-) )
I was listening to "zindagi jaam se" by HH from the album Hazir. The tune sounded so familiar that I ended up humming another beautiful number of Kishore/Lata/RDB (and had a great difficulty finding the song since only the tune was lingering :-) ). I shall upload these two songs to the ROS accounts.
I find that the follwoign set of songs have almost the same feel.
(1) zindagi jaam se - HH
(2) rim jim geere geere saavan - Kishore/Lata/RDB
(3) idhayam pOgudhe - Jency / IR
(4) yey pyaasi mohabbat - yey pyasi jawaani - Kavitha - Gupt
(5) chinna chinna vaNNakkuyil - S.J/ IR - mounaragam
(6) nenoka prEma pipaasini - an old SPB telugu goldie
this scale seems to be a combo of keeravani + occassional usage od D2 and frequent usage of Ni2. I would love see your comments on these songs. Is there any particular raga which gives this haunting feeling ? Or is it just an illusion that I have ?

I couldn't stop listening to that song again again...the song is a real powerful rendition....although vaarthai kolai by Shankar Mahadevan...this is the 3rd consecutive time i'm listening to that song and each time my resolve to support for Keeravani based raga strengthens....yaaravathu muzhusaa kaettu seekaram sollungappa....thalai vedichudum pola irukku
