Recently, I saw the video cassette of Kallaingar M.Karunanidhi's Pavalla Vizha. Illayaraja has written a wonderfull song about kallaingar M.K. as it goes like ...Thaane, Thannai Thaane, Thannai Thaane Tamizhukku Thanthane... He is an exceptional lyric writter as u can see in Manniye mannikuille Mallayillam Kathirazhage...
I am starting this thread to be able to discuss and share his wonderful lyrics also.

LuvvunaLuvvu has lines which go..
"Desiya geetham onnu ilaiyarrajavai poda solluvom.."
I dont think IR is that much of an egomaniac to praise himself in a song written by himself.
As far as I remember, it is vaali, the super jaalra

reviver-of-doubt: if he is an egomaniac to sing "indha kaala ilaignar seiyum kaadhalukku, ilayaraja seiyum paattirukku", and allow lots and lots of songs in his praise(from poonthottam to ...) , he might as well can write these lines..

Any other songs which anyone knows where IR suggested the starting line for the Song.
I would like to compile a list of such songs so we can really understand the extent of IR's imagination in composing a song naturally.

Dorairaj Pichaiyan,
Any song that has the word "dhoori" in it has got to be "IR's touch".
Vaali wrote two:
-Dhoori dhoori dhummakka dhoori
-Dhoori dhoori manadhil oru dhoori
and R.V.Udhayakumar wrote:
-"pachai malai poovu" in between the song the words, "dhoori dhoori" round out stanzas. There's no other reason for this occurance in the song other than IR's obvious fondness for it.
I read an article that mentioned that in the late 80s IR became very sentimental about giving the first few words of a song. I don't know how far this is true and how long this practice lasted.

Some more beautiful lyrics of Ilaiayraaja....
Amman Pugazhai Paada Ennakku - film KANNATHAL
Engirundoo azhaikkum en geetham - En Jeevan Paaduthu
Enna Samaiyaloo (A raagamaligai) - Unnal Mudiym Thambi
Ramanamali - a devotional album - excellent lyrics by IR - feel it by listening to it.

The song "Idhayam Oru Koil' from Idhaykkovil.
It sort of loosely describes IR's philosophy..
"Paadalgal oru kodi..ethuvum pudhidhillai..
Raagangal kodi kodi..athuvum puthithillai.."

When people can bear the following lines
"Thanneerukkum Mannanaikkum kalyAnamAm sAmi.."
"Thannerukkum dhAgam edukkum..."
"moochukkum moochu vangum"
"adhisayamE asandhu pOgum.."
"packet size vennila" and all that over-done lyrics, and claiming him to be the ulaga-mahA-kavi, why can't one accept vAli or IR?
Whenever someone refers to vAli, they criticise him for all the poor lyrics written by him by simply ignoring the vast collection of good songs written by vAli. Ofcourse, many of the old songs which we generally might think as written by kannadsan, have been penned down vAli. I had such surprises when I bought some of the old film cassettes from HMV.
Some of the recent ones - mOga mul - "nenje guru natharin", "innarul tharum annapooranee" from AthmA and I can add lot more to this.
IMO, vAli does not hype about his talent like others and to overcome the emptiness which he might feel in the film songs, he has been writing lot of non-film works. Is anyone reading his series in Anandha Vikatan? When someone asks him to write a song (which has to be bad!) and if he is going to be paid for that, why should he refuse it?

Nila adhu vanathu mela - did any one say it was on the road, Palanadhu -? means what,
Then could not think the 3rd line so FILLER used,
Ohya oooai...Pongapa
best example for total failure.
Remember this kanadsan's word:
Yarum irukum idahthil irundhal elam sowkiyame...
Karudan sonthau, athil artham uladhu...

Dear Srikanth,
If Raja-fantics are biased about Raja, You are biaased against Raja. Okay, so, Raja has given lyrics like "Nila adhu..". Infact, I can justify that also...because the character who sang that song in the movie was a hopeless "paamaran", who didnt know much beyond doing a day's hard work and squandering the riches in the night you-know-how.
But, let that pass. Probably, kannadasan would have have come up with better lyricss for the same situation. So, let "Nila adhu .." stand condemned.
But does that mean you should blindly attack Raja?
Did you have the patience to go through the old responses? Has anyone praised "Nila adhu..?". No, they have praised" Yaarum vilaiyaadum thottam", "Idhayam oru kovil" and Ramana Maalai.
Srikanth, it is not these Raja fans who are blind. It is you who are blindly attacking Raja fans . You didnt even check up which songs Raja fans have praised him for writing well. You blindly and randomly come up with a 'lousy' song written by Raja and rest your case that Raja is a bad lyricist on that song. Is this fair? I am disappointed with your attitude ,SRIKANTH. Condemn SPMahendran for his blind fanaticism. But not SM, Shankar and Nakkeran(and me too:)) ,who all have always taken pains to substantiate their claims with valid examples. I am sorry , srikanth, you have proved your bias against Raja by blindly attacking him left, right and centre.
I still respect you for your musical talents. But please, that doesnt give you a licence to blind attacks.
Srikanth, please dont think I am advising you(I am too small for that!)..but I know you are knowledgeable and that's why it pains me to see that you are behaving no better than SPMahendran- he blindly states "IR is best" without quoting proper examples and you blindly say "IR is worst" quoting all the wrong examples!
Now, I know you'll be tempted to reply saying "I have utmost respect for Raja as a composer..but these Raja fans are blindly worshipping them..so, I want to chide them..so I am criticising Raja.". You have done that enough number of time s in the past. We understand your anguish at blind worship. But I am not a blind-worshipper of Raja. I know precisely why I admire him. i know exactly why I call him the genius that he is. From their postings, I can say the same for SM, Shankar ,Suresh, Vijay , Nakkeran and many others. We are not claiming "raja is the best lyricist in TFM". We are simply saying Raja is a very good lyricist with some superb lyrics to his credit. If you disagree, go through the old responses and see what songs we have cited to prove our claim. If you dont have time, let me help you: We have quoted "Yaarum Vilaiyaadum thottam", "Idhayam oru koil" and "ramana Maalai" as examples.
Please Have enough fairness to analyse these songs and tell us what is wrong with these songs.
It doesnt befit someone of your acclaimedly high stature to cry outrage on merely seeing a topic like "IR is a superb lyricist" and randomly take a Raja lyric , dub it as nonsense..and say"hence, Raja is not good asa lyricist"
Srikanth,I pleaad to you with folded hands ..Please forget the IR fanatics . Your stature is too high to keep on responding to them. My personal wish is that in the future if you see postings like
"IR is best.ARR is muttaal. MSV was trash", you ignore them. Lesser mortals like me are there to contend with people like the poster who posted the above sentence. It doesnt need a srikanth to refute such posters. You are too big for that.
OTOH, PLEASE DONT RESPOND blindly to any praise of Ilayaraaja. If you come across a topicc that praises Raja, please do go through the old responses, try to understand why the poster is praising Raja and if you feel that the poster is praising Raja for unnecessary reasons, then and only then, post your response saying why Raja should not be praised.
Otherwise, what will be the difference between a SPM and you?See my point?
Srikanth, I have a great respect for your talents and I am sure that unlike people like SPM, you are not Raja-bashing out of bias. But the way you do it makes people think that you are biased. So, my point is why waste time on that?
Please dont think I am advising you. I am just pointing out a few facts. Ponder on them, if you have the time.

Hi
Raj:
I did not intende to post here, when I read other postings, I thought I should comment, because Raja's greatest disappoinment was his voice, as a MD, it was acceptable, but he forced people to accept his lyrics (few of them were ghost written).
My blood shoots up when people just crown Raja for things he does not deserve. I tend to reply at once. In future, I will try to restrain from this crazy act
Srikanth
