i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
1.Vedha:i know he always go for a hindi tune in his films(mostly for Modern theatres). No alterations! he just copy a full hindi song !
best examble:Manam ennum medai mele(Gil tho ye kulu yahag)
2.MSV: i hear that(from Sujatha's book"Neerkumiligal") "thulluvatho elamai" was a song copied from english to almost all famous indian langages. Is there any other songs MSV copied?
3.Illayaraja:Even the GOD of MUSIC Raja sir did some thing like this.He just used that "I love you"style from BOneyM Sunny for "darling darling"in priya.I have heard a totally same song like "Kanavu kanum valkkai yavum" in Hindi also.(i forgot the film).
and i dont know who is the MD for the song"ehu pal vadiyum mugam! ethai parpathu than sugam".But i heard the same song in an english film.
4.ARR : i was told from my friends that he did copying intelligently.drum beats and some music styels from cassettes like "enigma, ace of base".And the humming before the song "thillana thillana" is a 100%copy from the film"the island of Dr.Mozeru".
5.SA Rajkumar : a lot of help from hindi! best example "mallikai puve malligai puve parthaya" from "didi tera thevaru thevana"
5.DEVA:hee..hee..the master.(better we see how many songs he did on his own instead of seeing how many songs he copied!)
like wise there is a lot of songs are copied from Tamil to Hindi also..
Now its your turn friends....

In the issue dated 24 Feb (page 120) Kumudham wrote
a silly note about IR's copying. To me it simply
looked like a cheap shot that Kumudham took on IR.
I will write the exact wordings later when I go home.

I remember reading the article about ARR's copying in kumudam.. it was written by a reader, and it was NOT an article written by someone from kumudam who did some groundwork on that issue. The article has more fluff than stuff. May be, the recent kumudam article could be something similar. These mags rake up such issues once in a bluemoon just to increase their circulation by teeny-weeny bits.
I'd appreciate if someone could post the contents of the kumudam article here

"Kandukonden Kandukonden" by Hariharan is a lift from "Chinna Kannan Azhaikiran" by Balamuralikrishna. Atleast list to the starting of the song.

I said this b4. Let me repeat. The vaasal vandha vennilavu allavaa... bit in Sona Sona is a direct lift from the chinese new year song Gong Xi Gong Xi .... Malaysians and Singaporians would readily agree. Anybody heard this song in the net? (I mean the Gong Xi one)

Hi All
Every MD's has a Style of copying there own songs.
Some do it with a purpose, but some do it due to
dearth of tunes.
IR :
----
If any great music flops, just because of lyrics, he is a genious to make it a hit.
(Eg) 1. Kuyilukuppam Kuyillukuppam Gopuram aavadhenna.. - flop
Thooliyilay aadavandha vaanatthu minvillakkay.. - Hit
2. Ennadi muniyamma un kannila... Flop
Ottha ruba thaaren ... - Hit
3. Sariya Sariya ennai kathalitthathu - A big
flop that went almost unnoticed.
Kuzhaloratthil oru thodiyambookam - A malayalam song in the movie 'Adharmam' was a great hit that fetched several Awards.
ARR :
----
A genious to recycle or remix a same type of music again and again and again in different languages.
1. Pacchai kiligal tholodu... gave a birth to
chutthi chutthi vandhenga..in Padiappa.
2. Kuchi Kuchi Rakkamma ... again in
a song in JODI. ( I forgot the lyrics)
3. Vennilavay, vennilavay again in song in PUKAR.
4. A variety of his BGMs taking the form of a Song
in his next movies.
S.A.Rajkumar
------------
Needless to say, he maintains a record in remixing his own [Pattu onnu naan Padattuma] style of music
right from his first film to upto date.
And familiar hindi film beats gets a takeoff in his tamil films.
eg. Deedhi tera deev.. deevana... (as)
Malliga poovay Malliga poovay parthayaa..
DEVA
----
Master of all. Why to copy his own songs while a plenty are available thro' out the world.
Mr.Xerox has straight lifted several songs, but he
is a speacialist in remixing the same to a definite hit.
Eg. Buffalow Soldier -> Akila Akila..
Get down Get Down -> Oh Nenje Nenje..
........ I think if I continue the list the
space will not fit.
I think, his continuous Lifts.. Spoils the great tradition of Tamil film Musics.
Any Openion.

The first beat before "kuluvalilay" is not as said before but is exact replica of Michale jacksons "BELE Jean"

on: Wed Mar 29 20:31:15 EST 2000
ok, ARR obviously lifted the beats for "mukkabla mukkabla" from some afro-american guy ..some Dr. something ..
IR is nothing behind I think ..
the first flute bit that comes in "geetanjali" "amani padave" (in telugu) is taken from one more telugu movie"sirivennela" where hariprasad chourasia gave the piece..
then in "apoorva sahodargal", the "bababaa bababbare" bit where the dwarf sings a song is a straight lift from a 70's english song ..
also if there's a telugu guy there, in one of chiru's movies there's this very nice song "subhalekha rasukunna edalo epudo" (cavorts with radha) whose tune is a slight change of "ek din bik jayega maathi ka mol" ...
Deva anyway is a GOD in copying .. tamil anu malik..

guru,
i had the same thing in my mind. actually whenever i listen to MJ's Billie Jean song it reminds of Kuluvaliley. Also "Telephone MAni pol" from INDIAN has the same beat as MJ's "All I want to say is that They dont really care about us".

English songs are the most original. Among the Indian MDs, only the old hindi directors are original. ARR and IR keep lifting tunes from these sources left and right, right ?

arr ir:
You are referring to 'vidHaatha talapula' from sirivennala for which the prelude was (reportedly) played by HPC. Apart fom both aamani paadavEy and vidHaatha have flute preludes, there is nothing in common (in terms of notes) for these two songs. And by the way, there are tons of songs which have flute preludes. If you want to talk about copy give a) specific examples and b) describe the exact notes/sections/phrases which are similar. Don't make vague accusations and, more important, don't quote hearsay passer-by comments without confirming the same.
'subHalEkha raasukunna' is not at all similar to 'ik din bik jaayEgaa maati kE mOl'. No this is not an opinion, it is a fact.
Sometimes it is better to be silent and let others think that you are ignorant, than to speak up and remove all doubt!!!

`pudhu mAppiLLaikku, nalla nEramadA'(Apoorva sahodhararkal) is a recycle of `nAn pArthadhilE' (anbE vA) as admitted by Raja himself, I think...

to eden
it wasnt admitted by raja or anything, gangai amaran said in an interview that raaja composed the song using the same meter ( basically i dont have fundaes, can anyone explain ) something like you can sing pudhu mapillaikku with the lyrics of naan paarthadhile...(and vice versa of course)

I think only the pallavi is set on the same meter, the rest of the song (Charanam 1 and 2) are different. nAn pArthathile pallavi fits very well to the tune of pudhu mAppillaikku , hallmark of a subtle improvisation in the melody :-) IR has done it with a midas touch :-) Nevertheless, i don't see any covetous attempt being made in this regard for want of creativity.

IR admitted that he did recycle 'nan parthadadhile'. He did this in one of the concerts
and mentioned this to tell the public that music
is just cheating and he gave this song as an
example. He said Kamal wanted a song like 'Nan
parthadadhile'. IR immediately came up with this
tune. Kamal liked it and IR later told him that
he used the same song Kamal mentioned to come up
with the new tune.
