Saravanan,
You made my day! I am so glad somebody else knows/remembers these names too. Pankaj Kapoor and Satish Shah got some mileage with movies (in totally different genres), APSingh sort of resurfaces every now and then. Saw her recently in a family villi kind of role (in the footsteps of Kiron Kher, Rohini Hattangadi - what a shame that her talent is wasted in these kind of roles!) Sabira (not Sabrina) Merchant I never saw much of after that. Hers was one of my favourite shows. Jayant Kriplani was fun in Mr. ya Mrs., which is why I mentioned it in one of my earlier posts. T. Talsaniya was relegated to anxiety disorder roles for the rest of his career.
I recently met somebody who was a participant on Siddharth Basu's Quiz Time (way back then). Most likely saw that episode too, because I rarely missed them. What he told us about the filming of it was very funny and in fact, he was pretty miffed that when they telecast it, they had actually added some footage of Basu giving a hint (that all but gave away the answer) for a question that had their team stymied. Basu never gave the hint when it was actually done with the participants. My friend was shocked when he saw it on air, especially because it made them all look like real fools that they didn't have the answer even after such a helpful hint! Reminded me of the movie "Quiz Show"!
So, which were your favourite shows?

Most of the TV faces had better opportunities once the skies opened up and satellite channels swept in. Plus, DD lost enormous mileage after that.
I think I read somewhere Sabeera Merchant went after some scholarly pursuits - anyways she wasnt that hardcore a quizperson as Basu or Derek O'Brien. However Basu stuck to DD faithfully - never featured on the sat channels till BBC Mastermind. There used to be several good basu quizzes I'd accidentally come across on DD-2 in the mid-90s. Come to think of it, there werent many good quizzes on sat channels themselves, till O'Brien's Bournvita one. Derek's brother Andy O'Brien used to write for Amrit Bazaar Patrika's Sportsworld - Calcutta strong quizzing base gave Derek a headstart to launch himself.
More on those times later.

brings back all old memories, when we used to run frm our schools on saturday evening to see gaint roboit. every kid in the street becomes a robot. and all those serials like barabappappaaaaa, ek do teen char, different strokes, i luv lucy, circus, vyomkesh bakshi, karamchand, subah [ which was sadly stopped midway due to public opposition]. well tamilDD too had its part with adade manohar, rail snegam, dinesh ganesh,en iniya indira etc.. soem of the serials wud make us laugh for entirely diffent reasons when viewed today. btw iam not getting the names of someserials like 1. a thriller in which tom alter and nina gupta acted.2. anoterh thriller int amil revathi suresh menon combo probably with IRs bgm in to it.

Basu wrote his first book India Quiz around Sep 89 I guess. Soon after April 90 issue of Gokulam had an interview of Sid and Anitha.
Hi RS! :)
Click on this link http://www.angelfire.com/tn/justkool/SOTD.zip If you search in it, you will find a lengthy discussion on DD tamil serials.
Ek do Teen Char started out...hmm, May 4 86 and went on until June/July end. Some inspiration from Famous Five. Coincidentally both serials ran concurrently for a while. It had Vikas Khanna(as Ajit), Love Baronia(as Baba) among others. Vikas was featured in Vikatan I think as a seasoned child artiste with 45 films already. My fave character though was Ramu. A rerun of 1,2,3,4 happened in Jan 1989 on Sat evenings.
Circus ofcourse had Shahrukh and was a nice way to end the weekend in May-July 91.

However my all time fave much more than 1,2..4 was Hum Panche Ek Daal Ke(Apr-Jun 89), somehow that impacted me more.

Indradhanush was interesting too with all that cloning stuff.

Bhatti's Ulta-Pulta(late 87) was a rage in the mornings :)) Flop-Show(Thurs, 1991) was even better. Dont remember his offerings after that.

xpr8r, yup! :) Indradhanush was excellent and far far ahead of the drab good-goody scripts meant for kids! Far ahead of the times, and not just because of Appu's computer. There was a funny cook called Narasimhan. The episode in which Appu's bro gets transported to 1940s via a Time Machine was very realistically done.
Same time as Indradhanush(May-Jun 89), 5Pm featured 'Ashish'. Now this was an unbearable bore!

A pity that Indradhanush got the axe! I thought it was done with the right amount of science, effects, technobabble and humour (for those days, at least!)

Interpreter,
I used to like Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Idhar-Udhar ( where the entire Pathak family had us in splits- Dina, Ratna & Supriya), Nukkad, Malgudi Days, a serial by Sai Paranjpe ( Can't get the name, it had her daughter in it), Darpan (on Sundays, with a mesmerising title score by Salil Chowdhry), Satyajit Ray Presents--

Pretty much the same list here too. (How could I forget Malgudi Days?) The Sai Paranjype one is the one I couldn't remember the name of in my earlier post - yeah, it had her daughter Winnie Joglekar in it. Anybody else remember the name? (Sai's other good one was Adhos Padhos with Amol Palekar and Talluri Rameshwari in it.) Darpan was excellent. Wasn't Idhar-Udhar a loose remake of Three's Company? It had Ravi Baswani in John Ritter's role (may his soul rest in peace.)
