Songs that have made an emotional impact on us

All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...

  Hey,
  I think Uravugal Thodarkathai is infact sung by Jayachandran and not KJY. I also think that Kamal did not have a version. The song really brings up ur morale with lyrics like

  I often resort to this song, its some kind of a song that can lift from ur blues. Like what Phill collins had once sang "When Im feeling Blue all I have to do is take a look at u". I would say "When Iam feelin blue all I have to do is to take this tape to do, then Iam not so blue".
  Another funny thing I encountered was the song "Eeramaane Rojave ennai parthu moodathe" , I once listened to it on my way to my college at Chidambaram in the Bus. The funny thing is that foll lines that would teach everybody the concept of Bouyancy "Thanneeril moozhgaadhu kaatrulla pandhu ". We realy burst into laughter after listening to this. May be that it is appropriate, but still it does evoke laughter for some reason.

  i listened to the song 'uravugal thodarkathai' and the song has been rendered by KJY.it is a classic.what else to say.for anyone trying to record songs from 80's in a cassette here is a sample collection.
  
  90 minute cassette.10 songs in each side.
  i consider the following a classic collection that can be heard for decades.

  I vote to move this thread to the permanent discussion topics. This is the thread I read first and I have enjoyed everyone's posting so far. Ramesh, regarding the tune from Andha 7 Naatkal, our hats must be off to MSV. In an interview, MSV had said that it took him six days to come up with the emotional depth in that tune. No wonder it has such an effect on everybody.

  1. Mandram vantha thendralukku from Mouna Raagam. Soothing drum beats and wonderful mix of sax. Lyrics is really good especially "nanbargal pole vazhvadharku Maalaiyam Melamum thevaienna". I get carried away when the first interlude starts.
  2. What about Nilave Vaa from the same movie? That is a marvellous piece which still remains unmatched in terms of melody and tempo. Both these songs are soulfully renderred by SPB. I believe nobody could have done justice to these songs except for SPB. I have a 60-min cassette full of Nilave vaa song.
  
  3. Vaa Vennila from M.T.Kadhavu. What a humming by SJ. I personally think that no one can match the free flowing humming of SJ. In this particular song, oh! my God it is out of the world. I have 60-min cassette filled with just this song also.
  
  4. There is a song in Magudi by SPB & SJ. This supposed to be the only song tuned in Boopalam I heard and that too for a duet. Can anybody describe this song as I can't recall the lyrics?? Please do not ask how did it then impact me. At times, I get too emotional about Raaja's compositions and forget the actual lyrics but definitely not the tune and instrument mixings.
  
  
  I am not sure whether the no. 3 will fall under emotional category in the way I described. But I wish this song to mentioned here though I would not have described aptly.

  The song from Magudi that you have mentioned is probably "Neela kuyile nenjOdu nAn"... Yes, it's a beautiful song indeed, that has a very soothing impact.
  "NilAvE vA" and "Mandram vandha thenRalukku" are two excellent songs, that can move you.

  It's amazing... Your suggestion for a great IR collection.. I have a 90 min. cassette which has all these songs except 3 (Meen Kodi, Azhagu Ayiram and Erikkarai Poongathe)...

  I am sure someone would have mentioned "Amma endrazhikatha" from Mannan. Lyrics is so good and simple and picturisation is apt with Rajini performing very well. Every single word in the song makes me emotional and it was telecast in on Mother's day. The line "Annaikku andrada abishega alangaram purigindra siru thondan naan thanamma" with the temple in the background with abishegam being performed will really move everybody comparing Mother and Goddess. The song's first interlude gives such a devotional touch and wonderful composed by none other than IR, who loves his mother like anything. In one of IR interview, he sang a couple of lines and he was very emotional and almost in tears and he added that KJY has rendered beautifully than him. Personally, I feel that song would have got more weightage if IR had sung himself. I heard from close sources to IR: as usual for his own satisfaction, he also wanted and began to sing the song but he could not resist from crying and finish the song in full. KJY also expressed that he was in tears immediately after rendering the song. The key factor of the song is its simple wordings, clear rendering of them and importantly the words are very well preserved to be not disturbed by the music. As Balu Mahendra mentioned, the greatness of IR is that he respects others contributions and feelings and he will keep low profile for his music if any scene is picturised suitably and give importance to it. He added that sometimes IR do not play any background music just to give weightage to his camera shots and decides mounam is appropriate than any music. On the other hand, IR is also appreciated for correcting some wrong picturisation with his music.
  
  Another song where Mother and God is compared is writtend and redendered by IR "Petha manasu sutthathilum sutthamada...". The line "Thayum ava samikku melathan... andha theivam athum thaikku keelathan.
  
  Yet another song is the "Naanaga Nannilai thaye". I think Vaali has penned wonderful lyrics for this too apart from "Amma endrazhikatha". Vaali would have written this song with minor contributions from Raaja and he would taken extra effort to please IR for Amma related songs.
  
  All these songs never failed to bring alteast a drop of tears everytime I listen to them.
  
  Sorry if I had repeated these songs in case. I personally felt I wanted to express my admiration and impact of these songs on me.
  
  Apart from songs, lot of background score by IR has created emotional impact on me, which I am not able to express immediately. Quick Eg: In Thalapathy, Srividya was praying in a temple and he feels that someone is calling "Amma" and the spontaneous mixing of Tabla score there is really out of this world.

  Another emotional mother related song is "Thayenum Kovila Kaaka maranthitta" from Rajkiran movie. I would so nobody should be in a position to sing that song, anyway soulfully rendered by IR.

  Amongst so many love duets, composed by IR.... one lovely moon light duet stands out.
  Everything perfect in the song, the setting , the actors, the singers, ... EVERYTHING !
  "KALYANA THAENNILA" from Mounam Samadham. Sung by Yesudoss & Chitra. The song depicting
  Mamooty and Amla, is a very soothing love song.
  Starts with mild keyboards and guitar with a string section
  swaying the mind (Amla sways her saree). Then revebrates Yesudoss's voice. No drums, ... just the Hi-hats going "tchi tchi tchi" all thru. Tablas for the para, brings about a lot of change, when you return to the pallavi (back to hi-hats).
  I think you should hear the rest. The 2nd interlude is a treat to the mind. No one can make, such a subtle mixing, which still sounds natural. The "bloom" chords in the background provide the continuity.
  Ppl who wan't to think about their "aallu" should listen with headphones on and eyes closed. (Not me) !... not yet :-( !

  Yes, the above song is a marvel.
  
  Another one by the same team of IR, KJY and Chitra is "Mazhai Varudu Mazhai Varudu Kudai Kondu Vaa" from the film "Raja Kayya Vecha".
  
  It's a great song, with very innovative use of octave variations; has a simple yet effective rhythm coupled with a catchy tune.... You can listen to it for hours!!!

  mfm, in keeping with the son to mother songs you have listed, the IR song in "En Rasavin Manasula", "Solapasungiliyae. . .en thayi solaiyamma" is the most emotional song IR has ever sung. A movie insider told me that, IR's mother had just died and IR recorded the song as a homage to her. Raajkiran, in order to allow IR to vent his sorrow even changed the mother character's name in the movie to IR's mother's name, Solaiyamma.

  one song that i often repeat to myself whenever i face a difficult situation is "nalam vazha ennallum en vazhutukal" and especially the words "oru vaasal mudi maru vaasal vaippan iraivan" how true are these words?
  
  neela vaana odaiyil from vaazhve mayam is another song that never fails to impact me whenever i hear it. spb alone could have brought so much of emotion to that song. in the same movie, kjj sang vaazhve maayam. the song i think was by vaali. although there was an exhibition of his command over the language, some thoughts like "undaanadhu rendala than oor povadhu naallaladhan" evokes very strong feelings.
  
  talking of two, how can one forget the evergreen classic by PBS in vazhkai padagu where "oruvarin thudipinele villaivadhu kavidhaiyada, iruvarin thudipinele villaivadhu mazhalayada" hats of to the lyricist, the md and pbs of course
