All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...
Frankly speaking, I got this idea during the discussions with Vijay, Suresh, Srikanth, etc. in the thread, Raja Should Retire ?! :)

Suresh:
'Mogamul' - IR is not the MD. But excellant
songs. He is a one-timer. He directed, screen
played and MDed.
'mAlaiyil yArO' - swarnalatha has rendered like
SJ. Thanks to IR. Otherwise i won't be listening
to any other song. One day i listened this
song 10 times continuosly. Unbeleivable song!
I like the swing in the "thendRale pAttezhudhu".

MannAru :
"MogamuL"'s MD is indeed IR. The film was directed by Gnana Rajasekharan (perhaps he produced it as well). I remember this because this is one of the first occasions that IR used M. G. Srikumar.
Suresh :
The song "Un pArvaiyil Or Ayiram" was sung by Chitra (and KJY). SJ's song in the movie was "Poovai eduthu" with Jayachandran.
The chorus at the starting of the "Vandhadhe" song beautifully brings out the settings of a beautiful hillside at dusk. In fact, there is a bell-like sound that is used with the rythm.

Mannaru,
Infact, When i first heard Maalaiyil yaaro, the first thing i wanted to find out the singer knowing that it was not SJ. Swarna has really done an excellent job and she comes damn close to SJ in this song. I am not sure if SJ could have done a better job! Amazing.
Also I too feel the same abt "... thendRale pAttezhudhu.." Amzing Man!
This thread is fascinating!! More to come!

'unai kanatha kannum kannala' from idhyakamalam with music by KMV is simpl mesmerizing.it is a haunting melody and brings with it a mild feeling of loneliness and sorrow.
I think many of the elder generation would remember this song as iam sure this would bring nostalgic memeories to them .

This is indeed the best thread going right now. Whenever I hear "Dharisanam Kidaikkatha", it takes me back to my first love in my adolescence. The emotion and longing the IR packs in the singing and the prolonged "...Aaeeeeeeeeeeen" and the utterly devastating finish, "Deviiii" with the mirudhangam pouring forth like a fountain, wow, that song packs a punch.
"Kannil Enna Kaarkaalam" is another song that is absolutely therapeutic whenever I need solace. Whenever people sing the praise of a new singer, I remind them of this song and SPB's soulful rendering. Even if someone gave me a warm hug it couldn't comfort as much as SPB's voice in this song. And no matter how far Vairamuthu degrades himself in the future, he has given me these lines of empathy, "Nee vendum nizhal vendum sugamaga azha vendum". Everyone must have felt the inability to console themselves and longed for another's strength sometime in their life; these lines capture that need splendidly.

There are really too many songs, many of which are found in previous postings. But I'd like to mention two that are especially cloase to my heart.
1. The song "appanenrun ammayenrum" from Guna... I think this is one of the best uses ever of Ilayaraja's voice. The song so neatly sums up the despair and condition of Kamal in the film, and sets the tone for the sheer seriousness of the film from then on.
"bandha paasa chettril, vanthu vizhuntha thEgam, entha gangai aatril, intha azhukku pOgum"... There is such an exquisite feeling of melancholy to this song.
2. "Penmaanae sangeetham paadi vaa" from Naan Sigappu Manidhan. Beautiful tune, lovely singing by SPB/SJ, and really lovely interludes.

The Song
"Uravugal Thodar kathai" from Aval Appadithan has two versions: One by Jayachandran and the other by Kamal. It's a melancholic sounding, yet soothing song, especially with the Kamal version, which has an earthy quality to it.. The lyrics are superb too.
Another one is from one of IR's latest: "Thendral Vandu Theendum Bodu" from Nasar's Avatharam. Both IR and SJ have done a trerrific job. The tune, the interlude.... what a piece of music... It haunts you...

Neels, are you sure about the two versions? "Uravugal" was sung by KJYesudas. The only song sung by Kamal in Aval Appadithaan is, "Panneer Pushpangalae." Let's see what others have to say.

Viswa,
Thanx for correcting me. I have heard "Un Parvaiyil" only once in the female voice and I assumed it was SJ. "Malayil Yaro", in this I found Swarnalatha's voice to be disctictly different. It really adds to the mood of the song. Nice to know that so many people like this. And Mogamul was by IR. I have the tape with me. The bell like sound in Vandhade was a touch of class. There is excellent use of bell sounds in the song from the Rajini film (Maapillai"?). Starts as "Ding Dong Dong". Chitra's voice sounds like a bell in that. Excellent duet.
I will first put in songs for which IR is not the MD but the songs are class:
1. Vizhiye Kadhai - Urimai Kural. A class duet by KJY and PS. The only song that rivals this is "Kannan Oru Kai Kuzhandai". MGR films always have good songs. The songs are generally lot of fun. But this one really moves you by the sheer beauty of the tune and the voices that sing it. "Manjal Vaanam, Thendral Kathru". This place is really lilting. And when it is goes "Unnakagave Naan Vazhgiren" you are really bowled over. You can hear this countless number of times.
2. Then Sindhude Vaanam - Zamindar Magal (?) the MD is G K Venkatesh (IR's guru). A great melody. The first words itself tell you that it must be raining. Sometimes I am very happy that I havent seen the picturisation of some songs. I hope this was picturised well. The ragam is Kalyani and it is very well used.
3. Ammadi Ponnuku Thanga Manasu - I dont know the film so someone help me. I guess the MD must be MSV. Though the words dont say it, I get a picture of the song being sung in some fields when the hero is ploughing the fields. I think it has much to do with the accompanying music. Honestly I havent heard the full song many times, but it just wont go away from my mind.

Hi
Viswa, you have struck at the heart of music - by asking this question! Hats off. Look at what this is bringing out!
Here are some songs that have deeply emoted me:
1. Thendral vandhu theendum bodhu:
What to say? There is SO MUCH goodness in the song. It makes me feel so innocent and lighthearted. I am so happy to
know many people felt the same!
2. Nagaswaram bit in interlude of 'Poongadhave': (Nizhalgal)
Find the cassette and listen to this bit specially. The Nagaswaram bit tells a beautiful story. It makes a statement first, then explains it then there is a rise and finally there is climax too - all within a minute! And above all, it is so powerful and brought tears to me. It is not a
instrumental piece, it is like a man singing his essence out!
Of course the introduction to the song -
which is grand string section - makes me feel
so royal!
3. Ponmalai pozhudu - Nizhalgal
The sweet beginning in Guitar calling and
strings responding; the tabla
joining in, the new synth sound flowing, the flute
outlining and setting the stage for the singer.
It is such a great feeling of wellbeing! The whole
song maintains such a lovely flow - in spite of
breaks in rhythm and even a 'soga' melody in violin. Even if there were no lyrics, you could figure out that someone is exploring and admiring nature.
4. Kaatril endhan geetham: Johny
You are not a girl, you have not been in such a mental state in recent past, but when you hear
the song, you immediately feel what she is feeling - so much depth, so much moodiness and yet so much awareness and understanding.
When I hear the song, I feel I am with it totally!
Here is a side story:
Recently I saw in TV, broadcast of a special performance which Gangai Amaran conducted
for the welfare of S Janaki, She was among the
audience. Lots of new young girls were singing
her songs.
When the intro to this song was played, Gangai Amaran stopped the orchestra, came down to her seat in the front row and asked her
(in his inimitable style) 'Indha pattoda humming
engalukku marandhu pochchu konjam paadi
kaamingaamma'.
She was casually smiling and laughing and her speaking was so ordinary and even ugly! She then looked at her husband (who nodded).(someone tells me he is no more - sorry if I am wrong)
She then hummed the intro theme in to his mike. My God!
Silirthu pochchu! What a talent! What a range!
What an emotion!
Ennulle, Ennulle also evokes a similar emotion
of being vulnerable.
More later,
RJAY

Since I wont be coming to the office tommorrow let me post a few more songs.
1. Vellai Pura Ondru - Puthu Kavithai . This song appears as a duet and a solo. In both forms it is good. Based on Kalyani. Almost all songs based on Kalyani have been great. IR has used a lot of Kalyani in an excellent manner. A good song to sing. The tune is great.
2. Nee Oru Kadhal Sangeetham - Nayakan. IR had tuned all songs in this movie in an old world style. He was pretty successful. Manirathnam tried creating music reminiscent of MGR times in Iruvar using ARR but it failed. This song is again a pure tune and tune alone is its strength. Picturisation of this song is also good.
3. Aagaya Vennilave - Arangetra Vellai (?) KJY and Uma Ramanan. It takes a genius to make Darbari Kanada sound like this. It is an unorthodox look at Darbari Kanada. The charanam is particularly difficult to sing. The words and tune do convey a moonlit night. Another old world charm song. Another Darbari Kanada of IR that I love is "Isai Medaiyil" from Ilamai Kolangal.
