All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...
Frankly speaking, I got this idea during the discussions with Vijay, Suresh, Srikanth, etc. in the thread, Raja Should Retire ?! :)

Thanks Vishwa for reminding me :)
1.Uravenum pudhiya vaanil - Nenjathai Killathe
I remember watching this movie in one of the Devi theatres sometime in the early 80s. If my memory serves me right, there is a scene - part of this song - where Suhasini is at a restaurant - candle-light dinner? I somehow have always associated this song with that scene and it has impressed me more than the more popular Paruvame.
2. Kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu - 6 to 60
Makes me feel that this is song that all people in love - 6 to 60+ - should sing. :)
3. Mouname nenjil naalum nee ezhudum - Movie?
Ungal viruppam at 8.30 provided the accompaniment during my school-going days. I would listen to this song quite regularly while wolfing down my breakfast. Ironically, the mood of the song is anything but hasty.
4. Andha nilaavathaan naan - Mudhal Mariyadhai
This song, IMHO, justifies the thread that I started earlier re: IR and Diamond.
5. Kaadhalin deepam ondru - Thambikku Endha Ooru?
I had this classmate in college who was always singing this song. That he was HOH in love - with a girl he had barely glimpsed - was obvious. He managed to get married to that girl, by the way.:)
I will continue later.

yennavO pannudhappA.....
Ayyo, sollAdheengappA, the effect of "kAdhalin dheepam ondrai" on me is just inexplicable.....
It reminds me of an incident. I think 'T yendha OOru' was screen at Devi theatre in Madras, when it was released. My cousin (now a captain in the army)paid a visit to Madras and wanted to watch a thamizh movie for a change (he is from Bhopal, MP and Hindi is more than anything for him....).
It was first show and when this song started playing my cousin was going HOH and just did not allow me to listen to the song. (Hey, what a song man, Oh. Ah......) He said language was not a problem and added that something was so very pleasing in that song. He wanted to buy the audio cassette as soon as the movie was over. But we couldnt get one. You know what he did? He said
"Look, I cant afford to wait till I get a cassette, so lets see the movie once again....."
Hmmmm... I was there with him at the second show...
Another day, he once again went HOH over 'Mouna Raagam' and kept playing the audio cassette at my home all 24 hours and finally managed to vanish with the cassette :(((
Thamizh words in his lexicon were "inna, vA, pO"
Still, he said, "I donno, but when I listen to Mouna Raagam, i am lost.... i cant explain...."
Suresh
When I first listened to 'orE nAL' i think I was 12 and oops I went groggy from first listening.. Vividhbarathi used to play this song, usually in the mornings, and I could listen to this song (like the cricket commentary..) from all houses on my way to school. Hmmm...
Vijay
neenga sonna pAttu yenkitta illai:(
SG effect ungaLaippOla yenakkum undu. Another song that haunted me was "yAradhu sollAmal nenjaLLippOvadhu" from nenjamellAm neeyE. Ayyo, yenna song?!!! Hmmm....idhuvum SG effectdhAn, it was lifted from a ghazal by Lataji, I believe.....
adada, yennamAdhiriyE 'punnagayil minsAram' ungaLukkum pudikkumA? So, I am not a loner...:))

Ravi : Thanx for the info. Chittira Chevvanam is from Kavi Kuyil. I remember this now.
Let me start with two songs of SJ which were unheralded but definitely great ones
1. Sollayo - Mogamul. This was one of the movies which left the theatres quickly. The music too got lost in the rythm world which was dominant then. What a pity. This movie had some excellent music. Three original songs and one Thyaraja Krithi. The first song was based on Ramapriya. Second one in Natakapriya and this one in Shanmugapriya. This was the first time I have heard anyone using Shanmugapriya to convey "Viraha Dhapam". The sense of longing. You can also feel the longing of the heroine for the hero. The tune is ecellent and IR has beautifully conveyed this emotion. This is not a song which will strike you or move you immediately but keep listening to it and you will rate it high among your favourites. Vaali has written some excellent lyrics. "Ekantha Vellayil Mogamull Paaya".
2. Doorathil Naan Kanda - Nizhalgal. I heard that this song was deleted from the movie. What a pity. SJ is excellent in this. This song has excellent use of violins. A mood song. Creates an undescribable mood in you.
3. Maalayil Yaaro - Chatriyan. Swarnalatha song. This song again evokes landscapes. I havent seen this movie nor the picturisation of this song but it reminds me of a moonlit night near a sea shore. The words also contribute to this. The picturisation in my mind is that of a girl sitting near a beach on a moonlit night and singing it alone. I thought the ragam was Mohanam but my friend disagrees. The pace of the song is excellent and proves the versatality of IR. Swarnalatha's voice also contributes greatly to this song. I also wanted to write about Ennulle but already it seems to be a favourite with a lot of people. Which one was better?
More later.

Let me give some of the immemorable songs that have taken me to heights of "Ecstasy " :
1. "Kannan oru Kai Kuzhandai" (Movie : "BhadraKali")
- Unforgettable song rendered wonderfully by P.Suseela and Jesudas.Marakkamudiyatha varigal ... idamana IR-yin isai... A song which succintly portrays ideal husband -wife relationship.
2. "Senthazham Poovil" (Movie : "Mullum MalaRum") - Another brilliant gem from IR. Everything is perfect here - lilting music, excellent singing by Jesudas, nenjai thodum lyrics and picturization. Anyday, this song will feature in my list of top 3 songs of alltime !
3. "Malaiyil Yaaro" (Movie : "Shatriyan" ) - What Can I say about this mindblowing song ? S.Suresh has wonderfully described the feelings one gets on listening to this soulstirring song. Intha song en wife sollithan enakku theriym. She likes this song so much. Naanum intha pattin adimai agi vitten !
4. "Gangai Karai Thottam " (Movie: VanamBadi") : Ennal marakka mudiyatha song.
Who can resist Suseela's divine voice ? Can anybody tell me the ragam of this song ?
5. "Deiveega Ragam" (Movie : Ullasa Paravaigal") : This songs defies description.
Another mindblowing piece wonderfully sung by Jency.
Thanks Viswa for starting this thread.
More songs will follow .

'vaa ponmayile' from poonthalir. i feel that the song exactly portrays the situation.i feel like as if SPB is asking me directly. fantastic melody.
'kaatril enthan geetham' the interludes are amazing.the instruments have been chosen and the tune has been set perfectly to match the situation in the film when sridevi sings on a rainy night in the open verandah of a house.
'idhu oru nilaak kaalam'. once again i request anyone who has this song to post it in their sites.
an amazing mix of classical and western in this song. The interludes especially the second one is out of the world and beyond its times.the voice of TVG i think has been put to good use and this song is fast paced and creates a party mood .the husky voice of jaanaki adds well to the mood.
'bhoopalam' from thooral ninnupochu.the opening chorus or humming is deadly.the melody of the song can move anyone.the female voice , is it uma ramanan? and KJY have both sung the song really well.
well, someone had mentioned earlier about the 'maalayil yaaro' song and the mood which fits that of a moonlit night. another song which gives the same effect to me is 'sandhana maarbile' from nadodi thendral.the interludes and the chorus givs the feeling of being on top of a mountain on a moonlit night and that's exactly
where the song is shown in the film.
all songs of nadodi thendral were classics and really special.they were completely different from other IR songs in that period.this is usually the case with bharathiraaja's films.pity, the film was a
dud and the songs were overlooked.till today the songs sound so fresh to me.

Hi Guys,
I was amazed that quite a lot of u have some attachment to songs. All the songs that I listen too and have been more attched to are the 70's and 80's
hits of IR. I can say that I grew up with those songs. I tried to see most of the films in which these featured very late when I was working in Coimabatore.
The main reason is that we had a pillaiyar kovil right next to house and on the occasion of Vinayaka chathurthi there used to be a light music concert which starts at 9:00 p.m and goes on well past midnight. I was supposed to have listened to every one of those till the very end. I should say thats where I my fascination started. I still stop anywhere I get to listen to these foll songs Kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu, Chinna kannan azhaikkiraan, Thatlaatudhe vaanam, Minminukku kannil oru minnal, ore naal unnai naan ...
It brings back my childhood scenes, Mylapore and Chennai and I always carry a whole set of these wherever I go. IR is ofcourse my favourite. I believe that in one of his radio interviews Kamal has confessed that he resorts to the Thalattudhe vaanam song when he doesnt get sleep. But for me I get back my memories of the childhood days I used to spend in Chengilput back in the 1978-1980 when there was no TV and VividhBharathi was the only entertainment . I once heard that song early in the morning and fell to sleep again. There is one more song that fascinated me more than the song itself the picturisation of it. The song is "Yaar andha nilavu". I started to feel one with Shivaji ganesan when I started to smoke. I guess my relatives dont get to see this as Iam still a non smoker as far as my family is concerened. But the beat part was when father confessed once of a similar attachment to that song. So are there any other who share this kinda feeling?. I think that the beauty of the song is accentuated with
these happenings in life. Hope that more come out with such things. I also like to dream about green pastures, cool breeze and solitude to soothe a soul in need of rest. Songs like Kaadhalin dheepam onru, Putham pudhu bhoomi vendum, Kangalil enna eeramo etc

This thread is really getting lot of people together.
Some more solos.
1. Un Parvayil Or Ayiram - Amman Koyil Kizhakkale. IR. In the movie I remember the song to be by SJ and KJY coming in briefly. In the tape it is a KJY solo. During the late 80's I had lost touch with TFM. The only song I knew from this movie was "Chinna Mani Kuyile". When I heard this song I was blown off my feet. I believe the tune is the most important part of any song. This song proves that IR is up there with the best when it comes to giving a good tune. This song again is about longing. This feeling is very well brought out by the tune and the words. If you have a good voice it is an excellent song to sing.
2. Vandade - Kizhakku Vaasal. Chitra. I heard this first in Telugu Chitrahaar and was very pleased. Based on Mohanam, the ecstacy of the heroine is beautifully captured. But it is a restrained happiness not the happiness of the overflowing kind. The chorous also contributes its might to lift this song. Infact the start of this song reminds me of a Telugu song of IR. Kotthaga (Swarnakamalam)
3. Aalayamaniyin - Paalum Pazhamum. P Susheela. Again the mesmerising voice of Susheela. Just listening to the song gives you a lot of peace. Infact the whole song conveys that the girl singing the song is in a state of peace. More than the joy it is her peace of mind which gets through to us. The words convey this beautifully. "En Iraivan Avane Avane",in this place the tune is pure esctasy.
Oh,Kannadasan, where have such words gone nowadays?
