All of us would have had the experience of having been emotionally affected (moved, exhilirated, etc.) upon listening to a song (some song or the other). So, why don't we put down the songs that have affected us so, and also mention what feelings the song(s) evoked in us, upon hearing it...
Frankly speaking, I got this idea during the discussions with Vijay, Suresh, Srikanth, etc. in the thread, Raja Should Retire ?! :)

Its nice to see that many of us have been "moved" (or emotionally touched) by (almost) same (set of) songs. Here is my list:
1.ennuLLil engO..Engum geetham (rOsAppu ravikkaikkAri) : this song has a beautiful flute piece in the prelude that makes me close my eyes and listen to the rest of the song.
2.theivIga rAgam..thevittAtha pAdal (ullAsa pRavaigaL) : this is one of those songs, I donot know, I feel almost mesmerised; may be Jency-in kural or the soothing melody of IR or both..
3.Anantha rAgam..kEtkum kaalam..(female version)(pannIr pushpangaL) : a great composition, lovely voice by Uma RamaNan. What a prelude and interludes.. this song really touches me..Infact, intha paadalai manathukkuL paadumpOthE enakku kaRRil mithappathu pOnRa uNarvu varugiRathu..!
4.pUnthenRal kARRE vA.. (manjaL nila) : vaarththaigaLaal ezhuthamudiyaatha oru "state"-i naan adaiyavaikkum paadal..
5.malaiyOram vIsum kaRRu..(paadu nilaavE) : good lyrics (by Vaali), great tune, excellent rendition by SPB;
6.ennuLLE..ennuLLE.. (vaLLi) : many guys in this forum have described their feelings about this song. Its just not possible for me to write about my feelings (athuvum English-il..!), state-of-mind that I am pushed into. Especially the beautiful chorus in the prelude, that alone is enough to attract any soul.
7.thenRal vanthu..(avathAram) : ditto like (6), undescribable by me in any form..
8.unnai nAnaRivEn..(guNA), especially the interlude where there is a Hindustaani aalObanai, ninaiththaalum meisilirkkum anubavam..
There are so many IR songs in this catagory. Maetro is a undoubtedly a musical magician (mugician ?); how does he comeup with such a great form of art that talks to our minds and souls..?
Among the old songs, I am moved by "satti suttathadaa.." (aalayamaNi), "kaathal siRagai.."(pAlum pazhamum), "uLLaththil nalla uLLam.."(karNan),"thEviyar iruvar muruganukku.."(kalaikkOyil) are a few that come to my mind. kaalaththaal azhiyaatha varigaL (by the "original" kaviyarasu) and inimiyaana isai (by mellisai mannargaL).

gopal or MPR or ramaswamy gireesan:
can anyone put audio clip for the song 'poonthendral kaatre vaa vaa" from manjal nila for me in case u have the song.i think that is the only song from the above list that is not there in any internet site.
songs which makes me lively:
1.illavattam kaithattum by SPB,SJ from 'my dear maarthaanda". not a melodious song wholly, but a good combination of melody and rhythm.and the beat,AWESOME!he maintains the beat throughout and excellent use of chorus!songs like these get ovelooked.i think we can start a separate thread for songs that have been overlooked.this song makes u dance!
2.'punnagayil minsaaram' by IR from bharathan.
what a fast paced song from IR!only IR can combine melody with good beats!this song makes any dull person get up and dance!
if anyone wants to record a cassette full of beat songs,i strongly recommend the above two!
everyone, continue the good work!feels good when all of have similiar tastes as seen in the above discussions.

Friends,
It was sometime in 1979, when I was seven years old - we were in Mangalore - our next door neighbours were a group of bachelors - they used to take this kid next door ( that is me) to a beach near Mangalore - ULAAL Beach - the approach to the beach is awesome - a straight road going uphill with the trees on both sides slowly giving way to shrubs and then no vegetation - by this time, the road reaches the top of the incline and as this point approaches, my mind used to fill up with a thrill as if we were going to drop out from the edge of this world itself -and Lo! behold, from the top of the incline the road climbs on a downward slope and you have a breathtaking view of the Ullaal beach especially on a rainy , murky day with thin needle like drizzle caressing you - these neighbour bachlors used to have some kind of an audio set, playing this song -
" Uravenum pudhiya vaanil , parendhadhey idhaya moham " from "Nenjathhai killaadhey " -
OH GOD ! what a creation from Raja !! that song invoked the same kind of feelings that used to run thru my mind at that tender age - andru mudhal indru varai, this song invokes the same feelings over and over again.
Madras - August monsoon season, kadum mazhai, non stop rain - I used to sit out on our house verandah in Ashok Nagar and watch the rain and listen to
" Pon vaanam panneer thoovudhu inneram "
AWESOME SONG genrating nostalgia forever.
The flip side of the coin is that despite all these rains , Madras still faces thanneer prachnai every year.
This was the same time, when " O, Vasantha Raaja ", " Paadum vaanambaadi " were all hits.
rest in next.

another song from my list is
'oru iniya paravai' from johnythis is a typical raja melody with great interludes and sounds the best when heard at night.it has the effect of putting u to sleep.
the starting humming from 'oru minminikku kannil' from sigappu rojaakal.one of the best humming pieces from raja till date.i have tried singing the piece slowly and it gives a melancholy effect.but when sung with the pace of SJ in that film it is a very lively number and energizes u.
'megame megame' from shankar ganesh. a MASTERPIECE from sj! i had great respect for this duo for this song until i learnt later that the
song was lifted from a lata mangeshkar ghazal. but even then i appreciate SG for choosing the correct song to lift! it is an evergreen melody that
has the potent to challenge some of rajaa's melodies in that time.the song leaves a feeling of loneliness and sadness and sometimes even longing in u.when iam not exactly in a good mood i listen to this song as it gives a soothing effect.a really beautiful number.vani's voice is just too good.
'muthu muthu therottam' by vani might not be in the same ranks as that of the above song but definitely a heart rending melody. i do not know if the music was by shankar ganesh or by IR.
every line of this song evokes feelings of longing for someone u love.though it's been a long time since i listened to these songs the tunes are still fresh in my memory.
as u all would have noted most of the songs that have been discussed in this section have
been IR's creations.iam always dsappointed as to why the present day MD's rely more on rap and western style and give little importance to the melody factor. perhaps they are in keeping with their times. for this trend to change more fims like kathalukku mariyathai with soft numbers should become hits in the future. this would force MD's to change their style.
unfortunately.the style of composing in TFM is dictated purely by market value and the success or failure of a film.i hope this trend changes and we continue to hear those good old 80's type melodies again.

MannAru :
Your experiences (adventures ?!) with the "Priya" songs are very interesting and amusing. In fact, very often incidents like these get associated with a particular song, and when we hear these songs much later in our life, we are reminded of these childhood incidents. As we've seen here in our discussions so far, many of these songs have a nostalgic influence.
Madhan :
Ullal beach is a beautiful place, and the song "Uravenum pudhiya vAnil" is just the right number to overwhelm one's feelings. I can understand the impact it would have made !
Nithin :
Yes, that interlude of MV in the song is just too good ! I agree with you that IR has reserved some of the best of his tunes for PS. Perhaps it's her golden voice that motivates IR to ear-mark gems for PS.
The Jayachandran song that I mentioned has the words "PAdi vA thenRalE, oru poovai thAlAttavE, pAdum nEram koondhal vAsam,... . I don't know the name of the film. BTW, which film is the song that you have mentioned from, Nithin ?
Thanks for reminding me of the SPB number from "InRu nee ...". That is a great number indeed !
Diwakar :
As Chandru has pointed out, we'd like to know how the songs you've listed have affected you. So, could you mention that as well.
Rasendran, looking forward to your experiences as well.
Vijay :
"Megame megame" is from "pAlaivana chOlai", right ? That was a time when SG were using a lot of ghazal tunes, sung by Vani Jairam.
Among the recent ones (90s), ARR's "Pudhu VeLLai Mazhai" from Roja is a pleasing number. That song captures the cool, pleasant settings of Kashmir. A feel-good song that wafts like a breeze, and enhanced by the rich voices of Unni Menon and Sujatha.
Looking forward to more experiences from you all, folks ...

Hi,
I have a view that the songs that you like the most are the ones which invoke a sense of nostalgia in you. You can see it from the postings here. Infact sometimes you may like a mediocre song so much that it may surprise a lot of people. Maybe that song reminds you of some place, incident etc. Infact some of these songs may not be musically great. But each one has his own past which no one else can take away.
I will try to stay clear of songs which invoke such nostalgia in me but will try to list out songs which have touched me musically. Not that nostalgia is a bad thing.
I will list some of the songs of IR which have moved me emotionally. To put in Tamil "Ennamo Pannudupa".
1. Kannan Oru Kai Kuzandhai - This definitely tops my list. Min orchestration. Great melody. I can hold this against any great melody (like Vizhiye Kadhai Ezuthu etc) of the past. I have listened to this song for the past so many years and even now it has a great impact one me. I guess that is what we can call a great song. The voices of KJY and Susheela are excellent. Brings in front of you the image of a great husban wife pair. This was one of the songs which made me a Raja convert.
2. Ore Naal Unai Naan _ Illamai Unjaladugirathu. This again is a great melody. Vani Jayaram and SPB. Again the orchestration is not too much in this. The stress is on melody. The charanam is so execellent. "Mangaikul Kathal Ennum". This is one more song which I have been listening for ages and dont seem to get tired of it.
3. Chittira Chevvanam - Kavi Kuyil (?) My memory is not so good. I guess this is from Kavikuyil but I could be wrong. Corect me.
This is by Jayachandran and chorous. I cannot say that this song has moved me as much as the ones I mentioned above. I put this here due to another reason. This song invokes the image of a mountain immediately. I havent seen the movie or the song but some how I have the impression that this song is been sung on a hill top. Why? Was it really sung on a hilltop in the film? I dont know. My friend mentioned to me that when he heard Jayachandran song from YathraMozhi, he told me that the song must be sung after it had rained. It must have rained, he said. Music does have this ability to invoke landscapes in you. Maybe need another thread to discuss this.
Got to go now. Will post some more melodies later.

Hi suresh,
Yes, in fact the song sequence is shot in a hill side and the name of the movie is "Kaatrinilae Varum Geetham". Sure, Raja's songs invokes landscapes in ones mind and that is an example of how great is music is. If music is a universal language then raja is surely one of the greatest poet. Interestingly the same film has many more great numbers like "Kandaen Engum..." etc.
