A good singer and a friend of mine, Raja Govindarajan, met S.P.B at Chennai a couple of months back. During their conversation, SPB mentioned that he doesn't remember/have a lot of old rare songs that he has sung and would love to recollect them and have them in his collection. Raja then told SPB about newtfmpage and Song Of The Day section and the discussions that take place there. He then offered to give SPB a set of old songs.
Fast Forward to today; I prepared a set of 41 songs, and a 90 page booklet on the songs. All these songs are old SOTDs and the booklet contained the discussions on these songs. SPB came to the Bay Area today for a concert at Hayward. I met him at the backstage before the concert with Udhaya. We gave him the CDs and the booklet and talked with him for a few minutes. SPB was very courteous and thanked me several times. I was surprised that he made time to to even see us and accept this, just half an hour before the concert. I told him that we have a lot of knowledgeable people and huge collection of his songs, so if he wanted more we could give him whatever information he wanted.
The booklet that I gave him is here: http://www.dhool.com/sotd/spb.pdf .
The 3 CDs that I gave him included 4-5 more songs that are not in this list, like 'vaa ponmayilE', 'malarE ennenna kOlam' and 'thErOttam'.
Hopefully, if SPB goes through the CDs and the text, he will be impressed with the selection and would get back to me or RajaG with his comments.

What an engrossing interview. It was meaningful talk to say the least. I had a couple of occasions to meet the Legend at Hyd. Once with my wife and kids too. Well, when u talk to him, time flies.
I only feel we all should gather the honey from his persona and emulate the values he has shared with us. Singers come singers go. But SPB is special for his virtues, his knowledge, his diction, his respect for others and above all his approachability even though he is a star.
I appreciate Raja for asking some meaning ful questions and extracting the best answers. even though I do not fully understand Tamil, I could feel the answers.
If at all anyone is living in Hyd or chennai or Bangalore, and if one can, one should definitely meet SPB atleast once and not get enamoured by him. One should be able to seek more information as to how to become a good human being and leave with impressions for a life time.
May God be with SPB and all of us,always.

Guys,
Thanks a million for giving us this splendid interview! BB, writing the transcripts from the audio must have been a humungous task. Great work!!
The questions were quite comprehensive, and as SPB said, many were (clever) multiple questions, disguised as a single one. His candid responses made interesting reading..
Has this been videotaped? No doubt, it would be a treat to watch, and it can teach a lesson or two to the satellite channels on how to interview a celebrity, quality of questions, doing one's homework on the subject etc.
It was interesting to read about his take on the present MDs, who make life difficult for the poor female singers by making them sing at a very high pitch, who are already struggling with their shrill, false singing. As a result, they all begin to sound the same.
Did I miss Mano in the transcript? ;) Or was the "page intentionally left blank" :)

The interview was very enjoyable. SPB has once again revealed what a thorough gentleman he is. It is indeed a very good idea of re-recording those rare songs of the 70s - I am sure most of us don't remember them as - well as singing the songs of those rare composers. Kudos to the interview team for bringing out an interesting experience.

Just read the interview. Thanks for the effort.
Was interesting to know that even SPB felt IR was strict. I have heard that from Swarnalatha, Malgudi Suba etc, on interviews. But I did not expect that from SPB.
In spite of that, I think the modulations and value additions rendered by SPB and SJ for IR, have not been parellelled by anyone else for any other composer. How can we explain that??
Is it possible to put this question to SPB?

Thanks for the team for the very wonderful interview. No need to mention that you have done a lot of home work to make it as a wonderful interview. No doubt this one be the best interview for him. What a great personality and how he is so humble in his reply......it was amazing. It was interesting to read about MSV.
I am expecting this kind of interviews in future with great personalities like MSV and IR.
Thank you once again.

SPB+SJ combo for MSV??? Not that many, I think. SJ had a fresh lease of life only after "annakkiLi". Even after that, she did not sing that many for MSV.
Moreover, I was not talking about the quality of the songs. I was referring to the "extra-fittings" that SPB and SJ gave to the songs for IR. Those extra-fittings were almost absent with MSV. That is what I meant.

,
agreed, but one must appreciate a master song from MSV by SPB+SJ, the song is 'Sirpi irukuthu muthum irrukuthu' from Varumayin Niram Sigappu, here SPB and SJ compete with each others to c who wins, finaly SPB wins by saying the word 'Mayakkam thanthathu yaar' beautifuly with his beautiful voice :)

'sippi irukkudhu' is undoubtedly a great that fits this discussion of value additions. But such numbers for IR far outnumber those for other MDs. That was my point.
BTW, sadhurangam was composed by V.Kumar, I think.
And though GKV was the MD for the movie, "poNNukku thanga manasu", I have read that the song, "thEn sindhudhE vAnam", was composed by his assistant, Ilayaraja.

All the songs are repeatedly featured in AIR’s Listener’s Choice to this day. ‘Then sindhudhae vaanam’ is a song that ensures forever that GKV will be saluted with awe in the chronicles of tfm. I have often heard that it was actually IR who composed this song, and I raised this doubt while talking to PBS. “Oh no, I can vouch that the Kannada original was entirely a GKV creation” he replied promptly.

'Then Sindhude Vaanam' is not IR's tune, it is GKV's. Once SJ also told about this song was composed by GKV not IR. Actually the original kannada song was 'Haayaagide Eee Dina' sung by PBS and SJ,MD GKV, Movie 'Taayi Devaru' *Raj and Bharathi. I love both the versions.
