bb, appadiya kasu mela potta bothu naan intha pakkam varalai!I too like rustic songs, songs with gusto but intha paaatudoes not appeal to me.
So why don't you put "Kalyanam kattikinango thambi da thambi " today Thittugal thodaratume enra nalla ennam than !! ( that is one song i feel Kamal has done justice to the demands(;-)) of the song -apart from Sundari neeyum of course!

bb,
Also arguably the best intro song for any hero? How about " Puthiya vaanam " for MGR &
"Naan Pirantha naatukkendha naadu " for Sivaji?
Surely they are better than the SIQ.

I too agree with Vijay- Yehi hai right choice bb!
A good peppy song with catchy folksy beats, and a huge hit in the early 80s.
SOTD Flaw, Pon enbatho poo enbatho is definitely from Annaparavai (Srikanth, Lata, Radhika, Sudhakar). Koteeswaran Magal is a different film starring Sivakumar, Rajalakshmi, Thengai & Sowacar Janaki.

Song of the Day: unnai naan paarththathu from Pattikkaattu raja.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/unnainaan.rm
- Saravanan writes:
‘unnai nAn pArthathu vennila vELaiyil’ from pattikkAattu rAjA. Sung by SPB. Lyrics by Vaali. Music by Shankar-Ganesh.
Ravi Combines’ Pattikaattu Raja starred Sivakumar, Kamal, Jayasudha, Sripriya, Fadafat Jayalakshmi, T.K.Bagavathi, Asokan, Thengai Srinivasan, Manorama & others. It was produced by N.S.Rajendran. Story, Screenplay, Dialogues & Direction were by K.Shanmugham. The film was released on 12.7.1975, and was also dubbed in Telugu as ‘Bale Raja’.
It was the story of a rustic simpleton, Sivakumar, who comes to the city in search of his betrothed, Fadafat J, only to find her jilted by the playboy Kamal. Kamal is now busy pursuing the pretty Sripriya, while Sivakumar’s innocence and courage fetch him the admiration and love of Jayasudha, and so the reels roll---
Pattikaatu Raja had a set of memorable songs:
1.Kettukkadi chinnakkutti- TMS & LRE
2.Konjum kili vandhadhu-PS
3.Unnai naan paarthathu- SPB
4.Kannan yaaradi- PS
S-G have often been scorned at for lifting tunes and arrangements from other composers. And as for their original compositions, many of them have had disdain heaped upon them for their plebeian mediocrity. But to give S-G their due, time and again they have startled us with some breathtaking surprises like this one, giving us a fleeting glimpse of their creativity and capacity. It is a matter of bewildering regret that they didn’t bother to hold on consistently to this brilliance. Perhaps all along, it was indolence coupled with indifference that was their chief imperfection, and not incompetence, as is generally believed. It behoves posterity to temper its treatment of S-G with more thoughtfulness than their own times ever deigned to do, and to certainly adopt a more holistic view of S-G’s abundant contribution to tfm.
Of particular appeal are their fecund collaborations with SPB. Starting from ‘Kalyana ramanukkum kannana Janagikkum’, (Maanavan- 1970), many are those treasured moments when S-G and SPB came together to captivate. Take this scintillating sample from the 70s: ‘Ondre ondru thenoorum vannam’, ‘Geetha oru naal pazhagum uravalla’, ‘Naan kaadhal kili’, ‘En kaadhal kannmani’, ‘Kadavul meethu aanai’, ‘Paal nilavu neram’, ‘Enakku piditha rojappoove’, ‘En kaadhali yaar sollava’, ‘Aval oru pachchaikkuzhandhai’, ‘Idhu naan ariyaadha mayakkam’, ‘Azhagaana meni sruthi serkkum neram’, ‘Romba naalaaga enakkoru aasai’, ‘Kannan sonna geethai’, ‘Nadiganin kaadhali nadagam yenadi’, ‘’Enakkoru kadhai sollukkanne’, ‘Naan kattil mele kanden vennila’, ‘En kannin maniye ilam kannithamizhe’ --each one is an exquisite creation. And as for the 80s, they abound in such winsome marvels.
Recently, while assisting a journalist friend, I was sifting through my S-G collection and listing some of their noteworthy songs year wise. When I came across this one, I paused irresolute. Much as I desperately wished to bring this song as SOTD, I reminded myself that ‘yet another SPB song for SOTD’ brings with it the inherent danger of drawing stringent censure. But in the end, I guess, the sheer magic of this song won! Anyway, can anyone resist falling in love with this one?
Easily among Kamal’s best songs in the early years, it is said to have heralded his arrival as the ‘Kaathal Ilavarasan’ of the 70s. Vaali’s engaging lyrics find delicious flavour in S-G’s blithe breezy concoction, as Sripathi Panditharadhyula Balasubramaniam goes to town with this unforgettable song of passionate wooing.

Saravanan,
'Pattikkaattu raajaa' had Sivakumar in a duel role( ' Pattikkaattaan & raajaa' with an unusually villainous role of raajaa!). It was something like 'maangudi minor'( released later) or ' raampur kaa lakshman'. In the first song (which I don't remember!), Sivakumar gets teased by Jayasudha and her friends. Another song goes:
'------- pattaNaththu raaNi, pattu vaNNa mEni, pattik kaattu raajaa, pOttiyida vaa nee'. I am not sure if it is the TMS-LRE one mentioned by you.
The film had quite a few dance sequences, including SOTD, pleasing college students! PS's 'konjum kiLi vanthathu' was also some sort of a club dance number! It was also famous for asokan's caricature, modelled after his earlier 'naan' but much more elaborate and rib- tickling!
ThEngaay used to freewheel as a 5- star hotel josier:
Client: Saar, engitta 10 latcham rooba cash, 5 bungalow, 3 car ellaam...
ThEngaay: Yoga mangaLa jaadhagam! En alaiyuRa?
Client: idhellaam thoongum bOthu en kanavula varuthu saar!
ThEngaay: ada chee! idhellaam vENunnaa thoongak koodathuyyaa! Thoongaama ozhaikkaNUm! Next!

C V, thanks- yes I remember the 'raja' Sivakumar with a big meesai and all :), almost akin to his Raman Parasuraman roles some years later.
It was Guganathan's Mangudi Minor that was a remake of Rampur Ka Lakshman.
Konjum kili vandhadhu is a great fast number sung with aplomb by PS.

"Pudhu vannangal konjidum solai" by SJ chorus is a laidback , rustic melody with mellifluous flute , violin and easily the best song from "Murattu kaalai"

I can vividly remember the very slim Kamal in huge bell bottoms and his trade-mark t-shirts of those times, drooping moustache, slanted eyes, etc. when I hear this song. I remember how this song was a rage when the film was released.
Shankar-Ganesh, whatever talents they possessed, were still noisy in most of their songs. My guitarist friend, who was a very good bass guitarist, used to demonstrate it with a song by them and a song by Ilayaraja, showing how controlled was its usage by the latter and how noisy was the former's. This is not to mean that they were made of sub-standard stuff. I have always appreciated many of their songs, most notably, their songs in 'pAlaivana sOlai'. It is only to understand some of their limitations.

bb seems to be was waiting for the clock to strick twelve in the night just to immediately change the SOTD.
indha soopar kuththu paattaala(podhuvaaga aen manasu thangam) bb kku pala pakkaththula irundhu kuththu pOla irukku :)
but today's SOTD a very nice melody, arguably one of the bests by SG.
btw, bb when will we have "namma kadaveedhi kalakalakkum ae(n) akka maga" as SOTD? ;)

It is heartening to note that Kamal has moved a looooong way from his BELLS days.
SPB - Ennathe solla?Enakku padi iruntha naan kooda Kadhal Ilavarasan illatiyum atleast oru Kadhal Senathipathyagavavathu agi iruppen.Inconsistent SG and the irreproachable SPB as a combination had their moments and how extraordianry were they. This song gets my vote for best "stage"song for any orchestra even today.Just to understand SPB's width as a singer and his imagination listen to this follwed by"a song like "Naan eNNum pozhuthu".
Nice amends BB!

Song of the Day: ennudal thannil from Haridhaas.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ennudal.rm
- There are more famous songs in this M.K.Thayaraja Bhagavathar movie, like "Krishna Mukunda MuraarE" (featured earlier in SOTD) or "manmadha leelaiyai vendraar uNdO", but this song is a rarely noticed gem. The song has a long viruththam first, followed by a short song. MKT effortlessly renders this ragamalikai. Music by G.Ramanathan, Lyrics by Papanasam Sivan.
- Manisegaran wrote on Haridas:
Chintamani ran for one year in Gaiety theatre. But Haridass ran in the Madras Broadway theatre for 3 consecutive Deepavalis.
Around this time there was a yellow magazine called Hindu Nesan which was notorious in publishing the "Arputha LeelaikaL" of those involved in the cine field. The articles also mademention of NSK and MKTB. The editor Lachumikanthan was murdered. MKTB and NSK were implicated and arrested. This caused traumatic shock waves to run in Tamilnadu. This was the time when MKTB was at the height of his glory and fame.
As he was passing the days in prison Haridas gained popularity. The irony is that the person of MKTB lost out in popularity. In those days those linked with murderer incidents used to be excommunicated in society.
Haridas was so popular that it was the first film to be re-released in colour tint. In those days portions of the films used to be given single colours called tints. This was the beginning of the advent of colour films. Portions of Haridas were given colour tints. In the second release the entire film was given colour tint-thereby became the first film to be given tint throughout. (The first full colour film is Ali Baba).

bb: Nice choice! This song belongs to my father's generation. Krishna Mukundha Muraare is my favorite after my neighbour taught me this song instead of Manmadhan leelaiyai I used to sing as a little boy. He thought it was inappropriate for an elementary school kid to sing Manmadhan leelaiyai. Comapre that to the songs sung by kids in a TV channel today! Progress!? Thanks for reminding me of my elementary school days.
