venkat,
amarakaviyam may or may not be MSV's 1000th film but id did not star Kamal. Probably the movie you mean is Mangala Vathiyam which had vandinaa vandi than ithu vaathiyar vandithaan. ( Did IR get inspired for the later day katta vandi katta vandi!!)

Also the VJ s "Ennai vittu pirintha Kathalan" and SJ s "Katcheriku nanirukka" in Silk Silk Silk are good ones.Particularly the VJ number was superb set in MJ Album style.
The Senthamzih paatu tunes resembled amny of his earlier songs.
Kalayil ketathu koil mani resembled "Paal Vannam paruvam " from Pasam. But song nicely renderd by SPB
Adi komatha resembled "Ponna ellai poova" (Mayandi?)
The other one "Chinna chinna" the Kirvani pattern betrays the man behind the tune -IR.

Song of the Day: moothavaL nee koduththaai from arangEtram.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/moothnee.rm
- Kannadasan has produced several songs that distill the stories of their films and present them. This is one of the best of them. PS has cracked this song. Her pronounciation and modulations are very good in this song. V.Kumar is the MD of this song.
- Karthi writes on this song:
"I have another song which was also supposedly written by Kannadhasan for Kamarajar but in the end used by him for the movie 'Arangetram':
The song is....
Moothaval Nee Koduthaai
Vazhvile Munnetram...
I especially love these lines:
...Megathaal Mazhai Pozhiyum
Megathukku Laabam enna.....
Thannaiye Theithu Tharum
Sandanam Undan Ullam
Mannile Oruvarillai
Mangai Unakkeedu Solla...
This is the story of a poor girl who becomes a prostitute in order to protect her family. Her sister who was groomed by her happens to sing this song on radio in praise of her but sadly though... "

Arangetram was a depressing movie, sad and realistic. The last scene where a mad pramila is banging on dalda dabba remains etched in memory.
Why bb :-((

A depressing start to the week bb- enna Monday morning bluesaa?
But, hey, a great song by PS, sung with intense feeling, and as you say, the soul of the film is in this one song—
Kalakendra Movies’ Arangetram-1973 marked the end of the glorious partnership between KB and V Kumar- the collaboration that brought some wonderful songs in Neerkumizhi-1965, Naanal-1965, Major Chandrakanth-1966, Ethirneechal-1968, Iru Kodugal-1969, Paththaam Pasali-1970, 100/100-1971 and Velli Vizha-1972.
Arangetram marked the coming of Kamal under KB’s fold, and his talents were harnessed well by KB in the coming years. The film starred Sivakumar, Pramila, Jayachitra, Jayasudha, Sashikumar, SV Subbiah, MN Rajam, Sundaribai and others.
A depressing story, but told with brutal honesty- the eldest daughter of a purohithar taking to the world’s oldest profession to keep her family afloat- the family enjoying the fruits of her labour- the same family disowning her when the truth becomes known- Sivakumar still coming forward to marry her- but its too late- she has become a raving lunatic by then—( I believe KB remade it in Hindi as well)
As raja m says, the last scene where Pramila bursts into peals and peals of insane laughter, while drumming on the Dalda dabba is such a dismal end-
Another scene that lingers in memory is a close up of MN Rajam making a paste of arali vidhai in the Aruvaamanai with the intention of poisoning her entire family- anguish, frustration, remorse, decision-all the feelings were conveyed so effectively by that seasoned actress-
V Kumar and Kannadasan came up with some memorable songs-
An innocent and carefree Pramila prancing about in the village and singing ‘Aandavanin thottathilae azhagu sirrikuthu’ – a wonderful song about laughter, with some philosophy thrown in for good measure- excellently sung by PS.
A film shooting featuring Jaishankar & Lakshmi, the song ‘Aaramba kaalathil bayam irukkum’-SPB-PS.
The SOTD- Jayachitra singing a paean to her sister- and Pramila who’s listening to the song on the radio – when a rude interruption comes in the form of a customer(you can hear the door knocking in the interlude)- PS brings out the despair so well- the sobbing in between the pallavi is signature PS--
V Kumar made veteran TV Rathinam sing a few devotional verses too (I have been searching for these couplets for many years now)
Another stunner is‘Mapillai ragasiyam sollava’- an awesome song by LRE.
The situation is this- Sashikumar comes as Pramila’s customer in Hyderabad. After the act, when he comes to know that she is a Brahmin, he is harsh in his censure- Pramila returns the rebuke- as a Brahmin himself, he had disgraced himself by seeking a prostitute, she says.
Later when Pramila’s sister’s marriage gets fixed, she sends money for the arrangements and lands up just before the wedding. To her shock, the bridegroom is none other than Sashikumar. Both are speechless- she cannot call off the wedding, as it would mean accepting her own immorality, he too cannot condemn her openly, as it would mean admitting that he had visited her. In such a situation, there is a friendly singing bout between the bride’s family and the bridegroom party, and Pramila breaks into this song. LRE scintillates- rage, veiled warnings, sarcasm, mockery, and helplessness find place so befittingly in her song.

Good song. PS again coming clean and great.
There is a perennial discussion about using songs in movies. Some people argue that this is an abuse of the visual media as they view songs and lengthy dialogues as a distraction in the story telling. They attribute this to the inabilities of the directors to use the media. However, this is here to stay in Indian movies and most likely forever. My opinion is 60% tilted toward media absue. Say, for example, what is the necessity to have songs in anbe sivam? On the other hand, there are some excellent use of songs in movies that sort of save reams of screenplay and reels of films (one such use is jegam pugazum punyakathai in Sampoorna Raamaayanam). Balachandar used songs very effectively under several situations to carry the story forward (nUlvEli, avarkaL, AOTK,…). Almost all songs in this movie belong to this category.
Can anyone spot any of the current directors doing this? IMHO all song situations in movies nowadays are ‘created’. They are there not because the director wanted it, but because the distributor deemed it. Sad. I can even appreciate sensual duets, though it is far from reality, between young lovers – but the current generation of heroes and heroines are not given to it. The moment they start eyeing, they are encircled by 200+ mob, who try to mimic the lead pair.
Another interesting imagination is where would be a genius like IR if Indian movies are not like what they are ??
