I thought we had this madhmadh saarang discussion earlier .... my impression from what I read and heard was madhyamavathi ... if debate is closed then we can sing pavamaana ... of course if I am way off-base (more likely) we can sing paavam aana

There is a new SUN TV serial named Rudraveenai
which airs on Wednesdays from 8:30 pm to 9 pm (IST).
At the beginning of each episode they show a few
minutes 'separate' subepisode describing the effectiveness
of one raga. Last week the raga chosen was Sunaadha Vinodhini.
It is a janyam of kalyani and has the swaras
s g3 m2 d2 n3
The episode showed a death of a mother in a family
and the little children crying profusely. A man
sees this, feels sad, takes his (rudra) veena
and plays this raga on it. On hearing it the children
stop crying and come and sit near him. Then there
was this description:
indha raagaththin vazhiyaaga oru annaiyin
aravaNaippil kidaikkum manasaanthiyai uNaralaam.
Can anyone tell me more about this raga and if
there are any classic compositions using it?

on chinna chinna-pallavi shows Ni3 and Ni2,so shud me a mix of SMKP and SM,1st interlude shows Ma1 and Ma2.The charanams and the 2nd interlude shud be in Hemavati which is the Da variant of SMKP-coz they show Da2 and SMKP has Da1,and the 2nd interlude also has Ni2 and Ni3 and a very slight presence of Ma1 too.No MMG IMO,coz there's no Ri1 NEwhere.IR_Fan,did u spot a Ri1 NEwhere?
And no SB too,IMO. :-)

Ram:
Five episodes of Rudraveena have finished. Apart
from Sunadavinodhini they covered Dheepakam and
Amritavarshini. There was one raga two weeks
ago whose name I forgot. In a village court this
raga causes a culprit to admit his guilt.
Regarding Sunadavinodhini, I just talked to a
friend of mine who is a Carnatic music expert.
He told me that except "Devadhi Deva" (which you
mentioned) he doesn't know of any other well
known composition in this raga. He also said that,
as far as he knows, he is not aware of the power
of this raga as mentioned by the Rudraveena episode.
Do you have any facts you can add on this raga?

Neither am I an expert! But here is a passage from the book,
'Nad: Understanding Raga Music' by Sandeep Bagchee...
One of the well-known stories (there being quite a few versions of this) is
based on a belief that a proper rendering of the raga Dipak could not only
light lamps but also set the singer aflame. Gopal Naik, one of the few singers
capable of singing this raga, was commanded by the Emperor Akbar to sing it
and was burnt to death, despite having immersed himself neck deep in the waters
of the Yamuna river! Another version has Tansen as the singer but fortunately a
happier ending. According to this story, he sang raga Dipak but was saved from
death by burning, as his wife (or daughter, depending on the version) realizing
the danger, immediately began singing raga Malhar in order to bring down the rain.
Her successful intervention led to his and, the emperor's palace being saved!
From a more prosaic viewpoint, one can surmise that this effect of raga Dipak
should not be taken in its literal sense, but should be taken metaphorically,
for singing this raga required such a high degree of swar sadhana that the singer
forgot his corporal identity or lost his senses in the process of singing it.
In the Rudraveena episode, a veena vidwan is walking along a street where
a homeless poor family is living. The mother is making food on the roadside and
the hungry kids are eagerly awaiting the food. Suddenly there is heavy rain,
which puts off the fire that is used for the cooking. The children cry for food, but the mother is helpless. The vidwan sits down, plays raga dheepakam on his (rudra)
veena and the fire is back on in the cooking oven, in spite of the rain.. to the delight of everyone.

SK, 'gaNa nAyakA' is a great Sunadha Vinodini song popularised by Maharajapuram Santhanam. Will collect details and get back to you.
About Deepak raaga and its effects, the explanation is, there are certain chants (manthras) and combinations of certain notes, when implemented can activate the surya nadi (liken it to Pranayamam done using the right nostril alone) to such an extent that the body system can get heated up rapidly. This is the reason why certain mantras are not in vogue and remain within esoteric bounds. The true Gayatri Mantra itself remains at the hands of a few practitioners only.
