Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

I personally dream if IR could ask Paul Mauriat to orchestrate instrumental versions of some of his selected great songs and release an album. PM is quite great at that - I would rate his version of `Love is blue' the greatest though there are umpteen instrumental versions of that song. If that could happen, I'm even willing to part a good deal of my hard earned material resources!

To add:
Though I'm practically aware that that might only be a small fraction of the needed fund. But with more guys of similar thinking, it might be possible!

Forum: this whole idea is far fetched who is interested in listening to old remastered digital film music since it is now getting out of style. ARR changed the concept of film music totally, now what is left. who will sponsor? if one of us is a venture capitalist then we can do it. but venture capitalists are not spending time on this forum.

Re: Remastering.
Oriental Records has the copyright to release any IR songs on CD. So even if we remaster we need their assent. They are a little difficult to deal with on this issue, but lets assume we can handle that.
To remaster, we have to have the original magnetic tapes. When asked about this the OR guy told me , " god knows where they are, we only have the DATs". I dont like these DATs, because I know what OR has on CD is not very good and this DAT, where the bits on the CD came from, cannot be very different.
Putting this through software will not actually recreate the original recording. It might be good for a casual listener with hieghtened bass and treble, but IMO, thats not remastering.
The current idea I have is getting the audio off the movie film. I know they usually have a good copy of the movie stored away. Since this is optical there should not be any deterioration. We have to put together a rig which can transfer this to a DAT. This DAT can be transferred to CD.
But I think this movie soundtrack will be in mono and we cannot actually remix (change the weight of instruments etc).
If somebody can give me contacts in the movie projector industry/business it will be great.
I can invest personally in the DA/DAT hardware (hopefully less than 3 or 4K).

Kiru, way to go! You must try contacting IR's right hand VSNarasimhan. He is not a difficult person. Best of luck

Guys:
By end of today we must at the VERY LEAST decide what would be the best samples to send to these people. Obviously we cannot send the original scores. Nor can we afford to send poorly recorded samples - for obvious reasons. I think either one cassette or CD should be fine. I think, the right number of songs would be between 4 and 6 with the widest range possible - any less and it won't be enough, any more and they probably won't be focussed enough to make a correct judgement. Since it is a Symphony Orchestra, we must send examples that highlights IR's orchestrational abilities. HTNI and NBW are pretty low on my list as I feel IR has been more imaginative with his movie scores. "Vegam Vegam" (Violins and Flute), "Nalam Vaazha" (Classical Guitar and Violins), "Yen Vaanile" (Violins, Piano, Classical Guitar and Flute) and "Katril Endhan Geetham"(Violins and Piano) are songs that I feel might catch their attention - remember, to us these songs are just movie songs, but to these people the audio output is all that matters - not the situation or the picturization or whatever. I have all these songs with me, though I am not very sure about the recording quality (pretty good, but not the best). Please do come up with your own suggestions of what samples we can send and who has these cassettes or CDs. We can also send snippets (interludes) from other songs so that they do not find the lyrics distracting or alien ! Your comments please !

In my excitement, I forgot to thank and congrtulate you !!! Wonderful job ! :-) Let' hope atleast this attempt bears fruit !!!

madhan,
great job. thanks for your perseverence.
srinath,
thanks for taking the lead. i second your proposals. rephrasing:
(1) let's not include HTNI and NBW.
(2) include only movie scores. here, i would be extra cautious.
(2a) do not include songs in which the singers have spoilt the song. hence discard all songs sung by IR. i would not include envAnilE becuase hency has killed that beautiful song.
(3) collect songs of various genre.
my list:
(1) nalam vAzha - maRubadiyum - classical guitar/violins
(2) kARRil endhan gIdham - jhonny - general orchestration
(3) Anandha rAgam - pannIr pushpangaL - violins
(4) endhan nenjil nIngAdha - kalaignan - fusion of carnatic and R&B
(5) panivizhum malarvanam - ninaivellAm nithyA - chalanAttai and great chords
(6) O pApA lAli - gIthAnjali - interludes (counterpoints)
(7) azhagu azhagu dhEvadhai- rAjapArvai - jazz (especially the II interlude)
(8) iLayanilA pozhigiRadhu - payanangaL mudivadhillai - guitar
edhai viduvadhu edhai eduppadhu enRu puriyavillai. please continue.

Arul:
It would be tragic to leave out "Yen Vaanile"'s interludes :-( Perhaps we could record just the interludes for a couple of songs (about 3-4 interludes) and include 3-4 full songs. In fact, we can make use of Rex's site to send even a couple of BGMs ! And let's keep the list TIGHT and focused :-) So far "Katril Endham Geetham" and "Nalam Vaazha" make the grade. Does anyone feel why they should or should not be included ? Please do post your responses ! I think "Pani Vizhum Malar Vanam" is also a good choice ! So Arul and I agree on 3 songs. I'm still for "Vegam" as a prime example of orchestration and strongly against "Endhan Nenjil". "Aananda Raagam" is also a good choice, but I feel there might be better examples of IR's violin usage.
Arul, I am not sure about the other numbers that you have mentioned because I am not very familiar with them. "Ilaya Nila" may be good by Indian standards, but I doubt if it would impress westerners much !
Guys, let's try not to let the list go out of control. The general guidelines for this list are -
1. Good Orchestration
2. Traditional Western Styles
3. Focus on commonly used western musical instruments
4. Fusion leaning MORE towards WCM than ICM
5. Very, very catchy - should not depend on successive hearings to impress
6. **Very Short list** - no more than 6 songs/instrumentals
You can add more guidelines as necessary. But I would like to see this list finalized by today !
