Somethin not in line with Venkat & Saravanan posts.
The depiction of a particular community in poor light started from this movie.Poor Economic situation occurs irrespective of community and sometimes they follow the Arangetram sequence too!But choosing a particular community shows KB in his natural self ....PERVERTED!
More detrimental to Tamil Films ,(bein a Brahmin himeself)he gained the status of a "Revolutionery" after this movie....my foot!If he is one, then I am Che Guvera.
KB lacked two main features that make a cinema man.He is "Visual" senses are poor...he proves you with a blackboard!Spontanity..... whether in situations or songs.....pretty affected!
KD-MSV-IR(Even Pulamaipithan & Maragathamani)have worked hard and have salvaged many a movie of his.His other scrtutches include talented artists like Nagesh,Kamal.
Venkat, try to compare him with Sridhar or Beensingh or Krishnan-Panju (even KSG to some extent) or Singitham Sreenivasa Rao not with P Vasu!

Song of the Day: enna idhu enna idhu from nala damayanthi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ennaidhu.rm
- This is the first big film for Ramesh Vinayagam. This is Kamalhaasan's home production, *ing Maadhavan and Geethu Mohandas, directed by Mouli. This promises to be a good comedy film. Ramesh Vinayagam had composed for Yei Nee Romba Azhagaa IrukkE earlier.
- The lyrics is by Pradeep and is sung by Chinmayee and Ramesh Vinayagam himself. He doesn't do a bad job in this slow, waltzy song. The piano background, the small brushes of flutes, and no unwanted orchestration, make this a good song. Chinmayee's singing is also quite good, a welcome change from the likes of Sadhana Sargam.

Saravanan,
The Hindi version of 'arangERRam ' was 'aainaa', perhaps the first Hindi film directed by KB. It featured AK Hangal and Mumtaz.
I think it is Jayasudha and not Jayachitra who sings this song.
Courtesy KB, a very sacred thing / word such as (naattiya) 'arangERRam' acquired a dirty meaning!
One more KB/VK film 'thaamarai nenjam'
with Sarojadevi has been left out in your list. And then what about 'punnagai', a film said to be very close to KB's heart and 'kaaviyath thalaivi'?

Saravanan,
Add 'baamaa vijayam' to my query, in addition to 'punnagai' and 'kaaviyath thalaivi'!

CV- 'Moothaval nee koduthaai' -definitely Jayachitra.
And- all these other films you mentione are by MSV.
KB started working with MSV in 1967, and till 1973, worked with both VK and MSV.
His films with MSV in that period:
1967: Bama Vijayam, Anubavi Raja Anubavai
1968: Thamarai Nenjam
1969: Poova Thalaiya
1970: Kaviya Thalaivi
1971: Punnagai, Naangu Suvargal (KB's first colour film)
1972: Kanna Nalama
1973: Sollathaan Ninaikiren
And therafter, it was only MSV till Poikaal Kuthirai-1983.
Deviations in between were KVM-Ethiroli(1970) and Vijayabhaskar-Thappu Thaalangal (1978)
Another interesting fact: MSV composed only one song in Ethir Neechal- 'Enamma kannamma pakkam vaamaa vaama', while the remaining were by VK.

Chinmayee is among the best in the current crop of singers, and she surely deserves her success--
I knew her long back, though she doesn't know me at all! Chinamayee and her mother were staying as tenants in my friend's house in Adyar- this was even before Sapthaswarangal happened. And whenever I went there, I could hear her practice- some evenings my friend's mother, my friend and I used to sit on the stairs and listen to her paractice Hindustaani alaaps- she was ceaseless in her practice- my friend and I would go oor suthings (verengey-Elliots Beach thaan!) and come back late- Chinmayee would still be lost in her world of music!
Later, they shifted residence elsewhere. Then she sang 'Thesulaavuthey' in Sapthaswarangal and became famous overnight- the title song 'Snehithi snehithi'in 'Anbulla Snehithi'was catchy- then 'Oru deivam thandha poovae' for ARR made her a household name. Her songs for Sripriya's serials Marakka Mudiyuma (Ulaga medayil) and Saradha (Oru nadhi endraal iru karai undu) are also good.

Saravanan
Is it Ennamma or Thamarai Kannangal?I find similairites between Thmarai Kannangal & "Manikka theril maragatha kalasam" from "Thedi vantha MapiLLAi" .The song must be by MSV only.
Similarly i feel Unakenna Kuraichal must be by MSV himself.
Chinamyee...you saw a sweet girl in Pattu pavadai sattai as a competitor but when i saw her as a judge ....fame and cinema could change somone like that?Same with Sunidhi chauhan !
Anyhow Chinmayee is a great talent may god bless her.I think Karthik and she are represent the future of TFM.

OISG: I seem to remember that 'Ennamma kannamma ' was by MSV. 'Thamarai Kannangal' featured in V Kumar's Malarum Ninaivugal programme, so I guess it was by him.

OISG: Sorry, I don't recollect any other songs that PBS sang for VK.
bb- 'Kirukka kaadhal kirukka'- is a Srinivas-Chinamayee duet from Whistle. Music by D. Imaan.
'Oru thadavai solvaaya unnai enakku pidikkumendru' is a Hariharan-Chinamayee duet from Vaseegara. Music: SAR.
She must have sung some more songs, I am sure.

raj- I thought 'Orae manam, orae gunam, orae idam sugam sugam' is by some other singer-Chandana Bala, I think her name was. She does sound a bit like Chinmayee, though.

other_side: Just a minor clarification. The first two lines are from Papanasam Sivan's 'Enna thavam seithanai Yeshodha...' in Kapi. The rest is by some other composer. May be that is a new trend?

Song of the Day: pani mazhai vizhum from enakkaaga kaathiru.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/panimazhai.rm
- MD is IR, sung by S.P.Shailaja and Deepan Chakravarthy. I don't think we've featured either of the singers before. Enakkaaga Kaathiru was a good album by IR, dhaagam edukkira and O NenjamE the other good songs.
- The lyrics stand out in this song. Vairamuthu writes:
pani mazhai vizhum
paruvath thuyil ezhum
sillendra kaatraada
sErndhu manam thaanaada
kanavugaLin oorkkOlamE
I like the prelude of this song. Gives us the feel of "aarOdum maNNil".
- Nitin writes: The instrumentation in this song provides the backdrop of a night where the rains have fallen very hard and you are trying to find your way back to your little wooden home up in the hills with the help of the moonlight that is trying to clear through the dense grey clouds to find you.

bb: high time this song is featured. the mood, choice instruments, percussion, singers, etc. I also like the O Maya song in the movie, something highly evocative about these two songs.
Thanks

Thanks bb, IMO one of IR's finests, listen to the gap before deepan starts maaradha - is so well timed.
This song got inside my head a few years back and has remained loaded for a long time. There is something timeless about this song. The interludes are vintage IR - one sees IR's genius in this song. Hope more TFM fans appreciate this song. I have repeatedly heard this song 4 times this morning :-)
Thanks again.
