Divakar...your full-length version blew me away. Amazing!
This exercise brought out the best in everyone, while for me, it was instant regret on not having listened to my piano instructor at the Madras Music School (3 weeks and I was out!) and having succumbed to the lure of alley cricket and skipping my Carnatic vocal classes...yeah, that lasted a whole 1 month I think. :)
Anyway, people...for what its worth, I came up with a version too. Just the pallavi though. Check it out at

Disclaimer:
Down where I live, Tamizh singers are hard to come by...heck, any singer is hard to come by. So I was forced to do the vocals in my mostly off-scale voice.
And about my keyboard playing, remember what I said about the Madras Music schhol. :)
In any case...thanks for the lyrics Udhaya and hats off to everyone for their wonderful efforts. Hoping to see the next session start off soon.

Nice show. Shows the importance of two aspects: a solid groove and attitude in singing. Pallavi is well constructed.
The charanam is a bit weak though. There is a feeling of cramping of the words. For instance, Neengi-ppogum has been sung as Ningeeppogum, Ezhuppi has been rushed. I am not saying this is wrong way of tuning, actually, it could set you apart in style. But still, try to improve the charanam.

Divakar,
Very good presentation. Almost a full song! Very good singing by Radhika.
Your trying to work it into a full song shows your determination and discipline and taking pains to add richness (faucet recording and Rosetti playing) are things we need to learn from you. In fact, discipline of creating daily and finishing what you are starting is probably the most important quality any composer must have. All the rest will come.
As for scope for improvement, the melody has to flow even better, there is a feeling of hesitation in some places. And more importantly, if the tune and arrangement is consciously or unconsciouly inspired by a song, you should become aware of that impact and consciously get away from it, so that your originality can shine even better.

Couldn't agree more. A quality I hope to attain someday.
Would love to hear your comments about my version (and from the others too.) Thanks!
Sridhar...that 'Africanised' version was definitely innovative. :)

pKitcha, eh? Well, I've been around this forum since 1997. Used to be called just Kitcha then. Now with another Kitcha frequenting the page, esp. this thread, I decided to append a 'p' in front. And in case you're wondering pKitcha as in pazhaya Kitcha. ;)

Sridhar,
Your version could go as a score for a rainforest themed video. The lyrics are hard to discern but the tune is very catchy.

sridhar, I think I found the inspiration in your tune! wow! also I think i have identified udaya's inspiration to write this lyric for a sandam we all know.! wow! amazing!...frankly,
it just needs a good vocals and a touch up in backgrounds, good job. I think this is how one would imaging if a new actor dances for this song.

Kitcha
Listened to your tune. First of all, welcome to the Amateur-composers-who-dare-to-show-off game.
Here is my feedback. Your intro shows a nice mastery of harmony, but it is a bit long.
A surprise, You have tuned the entire 2 lines as one long sentence, which is unusual out of all we have heard! You must have a high degree of concentration and a deep breath to do that.
However, it is difficult to be long and catchy, even though the melody is good. But I understand the dilemma, there are simply too many versions here that creating a new tune is becoming more and more difficult.
A tip, shout out loud and be bold. That is what I learnt between version 1 and 2.

Rjay: Yeah, I could've trimmed down that intro. I'll keep than in mind when I complete the song. About the long first line, even when coming up with the tune, I knew I'll never be able to sing it without having an asthma attack. Its just not in me. Hopefully I can find someone to do it to make the song sound better. Thanks for the feedback.

Sridhar interesting tune. If you orchestrate it, I would like to hear sometime...
This is a bold step that people attempted tunes for Udhyaya's lyrics. Its cool to see how different each captures a "rain" theme. Very cool. I hope this trend continues (song-for-lyrics composing). It would be nice for composers to test their creativity in this sort of an environment. As someone said before, everyone becomes a better composer by learning from each other.
I would love to compose something for this song, but I dont want to commit anything yet...lets see...

pkitcha,
I liked the soothing mellow intro music. It placed the rain in a lazy afternoon mood. I could've got a better sense of the composition with a more complete composition.
