Using SB fundas outlined in http://www.hindubooks.org/culture/carnatic/grahabedam_and_symmetries/page1.htm
I tried to generate 12 digit binary strings from:

Moving M1 to S shows the relationship between khharaharapriya (melakarta for bhimpalasi) and harikhamboji (melakarta for senjuruti) ... is this right? Maybe that can "explain" something???

The 2 vary in Ga and Ma-so not really similar enough to confuse one...
They rn't SBs either.

Sundar: Bhimplasi can be easily made out of the picture with the clear "pa ni2 sa" in aarohaNam.
whereas senjurutti uses dha2 in aarohaNam.
(pa dha2 ni2 sa)
Bhimplasi has only ga2.
Senjurutti has Ga3 and occasional(not everybody does it) Ga2.

Thanks Vidhya, the distinction seems quite clear in the feel and the phrases .... the overall exercise of distinguishing between all the different songs and why they may give some similarities was fascinating for me. Bored everyone to silence in the meantime :)

I'm still not convinced...listen to the song "Sakkara katti Sakkara Katti" in Ulle veLiyE and "Siriya Paravai" these two songs are definitely Charukesi but whenever I listen to these songs I get a Shanmugapriya feel(esp. in the first song)....

Ram,the only possibility is that u feel it's SMKP when there r PaDaNiSa prayOgams(as these 3 swarAs r common to both).
Will listen to those songs shortly....

Last in Rudraveenai, it was Nayana Ranjani ragam.
It is known to cure eye diseases. I am not a technical person, hence didnt see the Aro/Avaro of the raga.
A small girl is hurt in eyes and gets treated. The mysterious man plays this raga in veena and the girl is back to normal in few minutes.

Dunno much but this is what I was able to find about Nayanaranjani:
Derived from melam 27, Sarasangi
with krama arohanam, and the
vakra avarohanam sa ni pa ni dha ma ga ri sa.

In the song Sriranga ranga nathanin (Mahanadhi) what are the 2 ragas? How are they fused seamlessly? Can somebody explain.

In 'Sri Ranga Ranga Nathanin PAdam;, the Pallavi is set to 'Mohanam' whereas the CharaNams are in 'Hamsadhwani'.
Can somebody clarify the raga of this old Ilayaraaja song please?

Peter Pan - thanks for the info. Do these 2 ragas have any common swaras? How did IR combine the ragas to appear seamless? Please explain in simple terms if possible.

Ok.. let me try, with my limited knowledge :)
Both MOhanam and Hamsadhwani are pentatonic ragas (ie. ragas that consist of 5 notes):
Mohanam:
Ascnet: S R2 G3 P D2 S
Descnet: S D2 P G3 R2 S
Hamsadhwani:
Ascent: S R2 G3 P N3 S
Descent: S N3 P G3 R2 S
As you can see, the difference is that Dha is replaced by Ni in the latter.
So, when the pallavi in the song 'Sri Ranga' (composed in MOhanam) proceeds to the stanzas, (which are set in Hamsadhwani) the transition becomes very smooth, sometimes even unnoticeable.
Usually in Carnatic compositions, a Ragamalika (song which has a sequence of Ragas), 'close' ragas such as the above example are usually avoided, just to ensure that each of them stands out.
Trivia:

It is interesting to note that both MOhanam and Hamsadhwani, though appear to be siblings do not share the same Mother Raga. Mohanam is said to be a 'janya' raga of Harikambhoji (MeLakartha raga No. 28) whereas Hamsadhwani is a 'janya' raga of ShankarabharaNam (No. 29).

Siriya Paravai is in raaga.com film name is "Andha Oru Nimidam"...but from the great MS I came to know that it is not a pure Charukesi but a diluted one...that may be the reason I'm getting a SKMP feel:-)

Ram,I'd better not open my mouth on siriya paravai-coz I hear it as KeeravANi(due to obvious reasons).But the 2nd interlude and the 2nd charaNam r clearly in Charukesi.
I tried figuring the swarAs for the rest of the song(i.e other than the 2nd charaNam and interlude)in the other scale (so as to get chArukesi)and found that there r foreign swarAs like Ri1-so not pure chArukesi.But I still dunno how u got an SMKP feel.

Heard from a friend of mine that today's Rudraveena's Ragam was Hamsanandhi and this Ragam is supposed to make noisy children silent it seems...Guys I have my own doubts abt the validity of these claims:-)

today's song of the day 'Oranjaaram" sounds desh thro'out the song...but SPB says "Enda Desh kku maaritta"....does hat mean intially the song is in a differnt ragam...pls throw some light:-)

Ram and others,in RudraveeNai,it was not exactly what Ram has said.it was given that when u hear the rAgA hamsAnandi,u get the same feel as that when u'r caressing a child(the softness etc.)
