i'm surprised 'manram vandha thenralukku' hasnt been mentioned so far! it has a wonderful bass score which accentuates the beauty of the tune and gives the song a whole new dimension!

rajiv, listing great bass scores of IR will be an endless exercise in futility:)))
whom does IR use for bass? ARR uses keith peters, right? (brother of famous karl peters)

bb:
It might be an endless excercise all right. But not one in futility ! Moreover, the idea is to discuss them and initiate people into the use of a bass score. Listing is always a great way to start off a discussion. I was told by a senior (ok, middle-aged guy :-)) bass guitarist in Madras that IR's own B-I-L was his regular bass guitarist. GA's music troupe bass guitarist is also supposed to be one of the best in Madras. I don't know if the two are the same. What is Karl Peters famous for (please don't embarrass me by saying that he is a bass guitarist ;-)) ?

yes, he is a bass guitarist:))

i guess the best bass guitarist india has produced is jim mayer (very few know that he was born in ambur, TN).
the BIL u r talking about did the orchestration for raja for some time, i don't know if he is a bass guitarist though. he then became an MD for a movie(vikatan had an article on him) but i guess the movie didn't come through.

bb,
ARR uses Kieth peters.I am not sure wether Karl peters was/is a famous bass guitarist.I saw him with the SILK band and he was very ordinary, the usaual so called fusion drama.

Srinath:
Please post your comments on "PONVAANAM PANNEER THOOVUTHU".....I was so motivated to encode this song under different formats, after reading your comments, even though as my `GURU' (Raj)(????)had stated, we are like LKG kids to understand what exactly you are talking....
I always used to wonder about the techniques Raaja has adopted in this number. Particularly you see the bass whenever SJ sings,"Ponvaanam panneer thoovuthu"......that bass is just beautiful.
And when the Saranam comes.....you can listen to the Mridhangam...slowly rising and then allowing the Tabla to take over...and again the Tabla leads to Mridhangam and again Tabla takes over....this is just awesome.
All the special effects of this song is captured more than adequately in 20.7 Kbps and 32.5 Kbps audio files.
Looking forward to see your comments on the files as well as the bass content of the song.

Ravi (of swara.com):
Thanks for Oororama ! I'm listening to this song after almost 3 years ! I still remember how I took the baas notes for this song. I did not have a good 2-in-1 at that time and the cassette recording was also not very good. I could barely hear the bass. So I used to hold down the fast forward button half-way and this speeded-up the song, thereby causing the song and the bass to sound higher pitched ! It took me something like 4 hours to take this one song alone ! hmm, if only I had had the advantage of knowing guys like you and Rex back then :-) things would have been so much simpler :-)) Anyway, I think that was around the time that people first started talking about the internet in my college :-))

To answer bb's question about IR's bass guitarist, when I last checked(which was a long time ago), the regular Bass Guitarist for IR was S.Sadhanandam. This person was absolutely amazing when I last saw him in an IR recording in 1987(Film Mahadev in Hindi). Sasidharan, who also happens to be a bass and lead guitarist and Brother-In-Law of IR is the person who has also played the role of conductor of the orchestra and I saw him conducting IRs orchestra sometime in 1994 I think. Both these names also appear in the credits of "How To Name it".

Hey, just missed mentioning something. Guess who else I saw programming the computer (Yamaha CX-5)for the "Dilwale" Song for the Mahadev recording(1987)in Bombay ?. It was a 17-18 year old kid called A.S.Dilipkumar ....... a.k.a. A.R.Rahman. Whoever knew at that time what was yet to come?

"Kaalai Kuilgale" song from UNNAI VAAZHTHI PAADUGINREN, has beautiful bass interludes, that drives me crazy. This song is available in Rex's site. The way the underlying bass matches with the rhythm of the song, is something that has to be listened to believe the amazing talents of IR.

Two songs worth mention with unconventional expression of bass are:
(1) Oh baby baby - from KM
(2) Minnaram maanathu - from GURU
We can find aseparate tune running in the sideline with the main tune. IMO, the bass itself can itself form a separate song.

Kovai, I also noticed that in that Kaalai Kuyilgaley. A remarkable song, except that somehow the song looked so loaded with so much music, so much music that you got tired after a couple of listenings. But, you are amazed at the perfection of the song.
One of the mystifying bass scores is in the song' Vaanam kiley vandal enna in Thoongathey thambi thoongathey. especially towards the end of the charanam, just too much.

Though the following songs may not listed among the best of IR's compositions, they have great bass scores (either as accompaniment or during the interludes):
1. Vazhumattum nanmaikkaga (Kali)
2. Endhan kannil ezhulahangal vaarai kanna vaa (Guru-T)
3. 50lum aasai varum (Rishimoolam)
4. Seno rita -the CD cover says `Snow rita' (Johny)

Wow, an IR thread that's actually about the music itself? What a concept?!! I'll have to alert TFMGroup about this anomaly.
Bass scores are easier to detect with earphones. Some of the unmentioned memorable ones that I can think of:
-Kodiyilae malligappoo (I think this is #203 in Rex's site)
-Paadum Vaanambaadi huh maargazhi
-Maamen Machchaan hey neethaanoa
-Oru kiliyin thanimayilae
-Pani vizhum malar vanam
-Thanni Karuththiruchchu
-Meenkodi theril manmadha raajan
-Kadaloram kadaloram alaigal odi

Hi Udhaya !,
I just popped in to save this thread from the archives and what do I see ? The Saviour of Lost Causes mundhifying me :-))) Hmm, is it a reflection on how we approach TFM that this thread and others like this are being ignored in favour of lists and arguments (look who's talking ;-)) ? Anyway, my next contribution would be "Maamavukku Kuduma, Kuduma" from Punnagai Mannan. This song also has a wonderful flute piece that is my major attraction towards the song itself ! But the bass is equally lively and the song is a guitarist's dream (atleast mine ;-))!
"Pani Vizhum Malar Vanam" is also a unique song where the bass gets a lot more attention that it does usually ! I'll try to pay more attention to this thread during this weekend ! I am also planning to write a review on ESK - the funny thing being that in one of the ESK songs I heard a 'regular' bass score from ARR for the first time in a looong while !!! Also, not many may know, but "Chinna Chinna Aasai", which is pretty low on my list of faves, also has a good bass score !
