Guys, looks like I don't have most of the songs that you suggested for New Year's day. So, here is something I think will be apt.
Song of the Day: puththam pudhu bhoomi vENdum from thirudaa thirudaa.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/puththam.rm
A great song to fill us with hope and anticipation for the new year. Wish you all a happy 2003. Hopefully, things should be better than they were in 2002.

Nice song, BB! Rahman's recent best.
Pop ballad style song (Beatles/Phil Collins inspired?) set in Humsadhwani(?). It is also very
well placed in the movie (as a soothing lullaby after the chase/war).
The lyrics are written with genuine feeling. Especially the words: Kodi Keerthanaiyum kavi koartha vaarthaigalum Thuli kanneerin artham tharumo? in the charanam is really moving.
And not to mention the least, Rahman does the veLLaippookkaL without substituting to 'l' ;)

Song of the Day: sonnadhai seidhida from ??
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sonnadhai.rm
I don't know about the movie of this song, in fact I don't know much about the song itself, except that it has the majestic voice of GNB. GNB (G.N.Balasubramaniam) is one of the all-time greats in carnatic music. He has acted and sung in a few movies in the 1930s and 1940s. I think all the songs he sung were classical/semi-classical numbers. This song itself is a raagamalikai.
Randor Guy has written an insightful article on GNB in films in sangeetham.com here: http://www.sangeetham.com/moves.htm
As he writes, GNB not only had a great voice, but he was also handsome. He acted in five films only, Sakunthalai being the more famous one.
I have a few of his songs in films, I can post it if enough people are interested.

The ultimate sirippu song, sung by N.S.Krishnan. He explains the different types of sirippu in this song. MD is T.R.Pappa.

Thank you for reintroducing this masterpiece.
I have not heard (of) a similar song in any other language or by anyone else. Probably one of a kind in the whole world.
And what a creative development of the idea - every charanam, NSK tries to begin singing earnestly and then gets into sirippu so naturally, and at one point sings the charanam in laughters. As a crowning idea, do not miss the bringing out of music in sirippu at the end. Another classy touch is the
atmospherics provided by the constant laughing counterpart who goes wild at times! Imagine the song without that guy!
Our songwriters/composers who cannot go beyond the
10 templates of U.S.Pop, must listen to this and see how a creative mind can make anything to a captivating song.
A few more such fluent, playful songs come to my mind -
Nitham nitham nellu choru's Sappattu Raami (mullum malarum), (bb, if you give me this song, I will give you half of my kingdom!)
Enna paduvathu's intro (vasanths movie)
Eduthu naan vidavaa's thikku vai (pudhu pudhu arthangal)

Great song - thanks bb !
IR tried a similar song in his telugu album 'Chinnabbayi', SPB did wonderful job there - ennennavoo puthu puthu sirippellaam varum athila - Example : Soda Gas Sirippu ! I think the song goes something like, 'Navvuloo puttaanu, navvulo perigaanu' (Sorry, I don't know telugu :-))

bb- great way to start the year- all excellent songs!
I think the servant in 'Sirippu' was TS Durairaj. Yes,Madhuram also joins in the laughter.
And a special thanks for the song by GNB- it is one that I have never heard before. It was tfm's loss that he didn't sing many more songs. 'Thondar anjum kalirum', 'Kannaney pothum pothum', 'Thullumathey vetkkai kanaiyale' -all Bhama Vijayam-1934, and 'Padmasana veda', 'Seththavartham purameritha Sivanaar', 'Seeraapthi sayana jeeva', 'Mahadeva deva'- Sathi Anusaya or Daththathreaya Jananam-1937 are all treasured classics.

Song of the Day: alaigaLE vaa from kavithai malar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/alaigale.rm
MD: IR. Looks like this movie was never released. Nevertheless, a good song. The interludes are similar to "puththam pudhu kaalai". Sung by Jency (?) and SPB.
I couldn't find more information on this song. Raajangahm doesn't have any songs listed under Kavithai malar.

I found this sp vinyl somewhere and this song was a surprise. absolutely successful & flawless attempt at a "musical" type song, also very melodious not a hallmark of musical number normally! very dramatic too. what a composition. i am imagining what webber would've felt upon hearing this song. he would've stopped his career and would've preferred to be a musician in IR' orcehstra.

It is very interesting to listen to an unreleased song of late 70's Raja.
One of the longest pallavis. Very experimental charanam especially that of SPB singing.
Scale seems like Keeravani - Ennullae Ennullae when Jenci starts.
But the melody is so long winding and looks like
the composer is freely improvising in search of
a tune!! The interludes look like pieces from
the BGM of the movie and dont hold together well. Very amateurish, if I may feel free to say my opinion. Reminds of Thayanban's attempts at WCM in Andru peidha mazhaiyil.
All the more it highlights how refined Raja became in the early days quickly! Interesting find.
