I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

I think the debate has to stop, the movie is good and we all better not point out every grievance. it is a good one and believe me if
Aamir khan had made this movie entire India would have said he is great. sad thing with kamal is he is a tamilian and hence has to struggle hard to achieve no.1 in a hindi dominated film scenario.
so better admire him than trying to find fault with him. if we demotivate him, then we will get only Chimbu and Danush in tamil cinema

Speaker,
he he he! romba over zealousaa irukkeno??
The fact of the matter is I loved this movie and I want to see it succeed, so that we can expect other such movies in the future.
From a 'pothu nalam' point of view, I was also trying to help Anand out of his missery. The poor fellow was loosing sleep over a movie he hasn't even seen.

I think sync sound does not leave much scope for a rich bgm score. Even Hey Ram's score was not as rich as Lajja. I think its the same with Virumandi.
As long as it is appropriate, the job is done.

And I want to know how these morons come to write cinaema reviews?
Music Indiaonline has the entire story including the climax. So have a lot of the so called 'reviews' on the net. They just write the entire story and call it a review.

Overall Virumaandi is an Above Average movie watchable once
Plus Points
1. Stunning Performance - Pasupathy, Abirami,Peykamman,Rohini,Kamal and Napaleon and other artists
2. Very Realistic Scenes - Fights, Jallikatu and In many Places
3. Excellent Photography and Art Direction
4. Excellent Songs and Music
Minus Points
1. Do Not Expect a Classic Movie in the Standard of Hey Ram, Thevar Magan.
2. Lots of Violence
3. Climax Unrealistic
4. Slow moving Scenes
5. At the End of movie We get a heavy feeling like the movie has been running for 8 hours
6. Not suitable for Family Viewing
7. Nasser Wasted
Finally a movie which would have been a All time classic is spoilt by Director Kamal

This has been spread for years by Kamal baiters. One can understand such comments if his co-stars (include Kamal's other movies too) were all national award winners and somehow their performance wasn't shown in good light in Kamal movies. There are quite a few actors (Nasser, Madhavan, Jayaram, Ramesh Arvind, Arjun, ...) who have had very good roles in Kamal's productions. For many of these actors, the only time their acting has been praised was in Kamal's movies. I wonder if any other actor has given chances to so many other actors in his home productions.
Sivaji Ganesan played dad in both Devar Magan and Padaiyappa. Which role is more remembered and which one got him an award? Take Abbas. His role in Pammal K.S. was bigger than most of his other recent roles.
I think the above comment/rumour started based on the movies that Kamal and Rajini acted in the late 70s. At that time Rajini was a beginner and naturally his roles were smaller. Kamal baiters conveniently interpret that as Kamal editing others' roles! People forget that Kamal also played second fiddle to Rajini in some movies (like moondru mudichu?).
Most people when they go to a Kamal, Rajini or any other big actor's movie, expect that actor to have a dominant role. If you expect somebody else to have a dominant role, then the best thing to do is to watch a movie in which that guy is the hero!

OK Guys&gals,i think we should stop the debate on the quality of the film. It's very good based on my feeling when i saw the film, majority of posts on this thread&almost all the reviews. So with a good word of mouth coupled with a fantastic opeaning(Anbe shivam lacked this),the film should do well.Atleast till now i have not read anywhere that it is a flop&it's completed a week in the theatre(enough time to see the results in these days). If anybody out there can throw more light on this aspect, please post.

Any one read the review on outlook.com.The person looks to be a major Kamal baiter b'coz apart from kamal bashing there's hardly anything in the review.I have a feeling the writer is Khalid Mohammad(ex-editor of filmfare,ex-critic of Times of India,Kamal fan turned foe,now flop/bad director of Fiza&tehzeeb)

This movie is a classic. And there are reasons why.
I am an admirer of good cinema, thus an admirer of Kamal Hassan
But for the last 4 years or so, I have felt disappointed with almost all of Kamal's movies.
Hey Ram would have been a classic - excellent direction, superb acting by all, super music, the movie was revolutionary in its style - but it failed in the most important department, the story-screenplay. Bad characterisation, confused story (infact, many stories) - it was a success to Kamal the Director, but a miserable failure to kamal the writer.
Aalavandhaan was the same - exactly the same faults, in the same area, by the same person.
Anbe Sivam, I don't even want to talk about.
Naladamayanthi, too. It was a joke; an insult to to Kamal the writer.
All this from the man who wrote classics such as Mahanadi, Devar Magan, and that beautiful-yet-simple masterpiece, Nammavar!
When I almost gave up on him, he comes back with VIRUMANDI!
What a movie!
Simple and beautiful story - excellent screenplay - superlative direction - superb acting by all. There is a logical progression in the story from scene to scene.
Contrary to what a few have said here, every single scene is a Gem!
I bet to any person who has not yet seen the movie: you would not have have seen such a movie before. Especially the first half, specifiacally the first 15 minutes. Also the ending - so, almost the whole movie!!
And for those of you who are "confused" by the movie, please listen to this - I do not understand Einstein's Theory of Relativity, I am damn confused about it - but I am not so low a soul to insult that great thinker by saying he has confused me with HIS confused state of mine. I am honest enough to know where the confusion resides.
Watch it. You will love it. Take it from a man who has been the severest critic of Kamal Hassan.
When this movie gets nominated as India's official entry to the Oscars - all confusions will get cleared.

mnt,
Why pulling me in? I never spelt out "Go watch the movie"...neenga thaan CAPS-la ezhuthi publicity pannineenga! newtfmpage-la Virumandi poster ottarthu neenga thaan! :-)
R.Saravanan,
Slow moving scenes? You get the feeling that u've been watching it for 8 hours?!! That's something unique! This is a fast film pa!
And Nasseer being wasted is a minus point? Well, looks like you have made up your mind on certain things.
Prasanna,
Everything is fine but for the 'Theory Of Relativity' stuff. That would just justify that Kamal is a genious and he would be recognised later,if not now. When you are talking about films, how you reach out to the people is more important. It is of no use if Kamal is just going to be treated like Galielo. He should be able to do things convincingly. He has done this in Virumandi. So we actually needn't get into the Theory Of Relativity and confuse ourselves in this manner! :-)
Anand,
Here I am NOW! Daily college leave irukkathu pa, I cant bunk everyday! :-)
