Friends
I have watched few movies like Alaipayuthe ,Mudhalvan and latest Tenali ,the BGM score was interesting in the sense MD plays the instrument version of the songs as BGM.
Every MD has his/her own style i think this will be the latest trend for BGMS.
This means either the MDs are too busy or too lazy to come up with some interesting BGM or it is their trademark style your thoughts on this.
Did the concept of BGM was there in 60s i mean they used to have a band play the bgm or a same set of bgms for eg for pathos one type and for horro or thrill one type and these same get repeated in different movies.
My work is done here i will leave it to the experts

In the movie Michael Madana Kamarajan... there is a situation when Kamal (as Raju) meets Kushboo near the water fountain or something. (towards the end of the movie)
Kamal says "I have not told you the truth..." Kushboo says "OK, tell me now..."
Kamal says "Sonnathum enna vittutu poiteena"
There comes a lone violin in the background...
Man! IR transforms the situation that was otherwise pretty comic into a one filled with emotion, hats off IR...

saketh, i totally agree.
imo, we cud discuss such aspects, rather than general bgm... what i mean, subtle mood changes.

And in the movie Moondram Pirai,
Sridevi gets lost, Kamal searches her all over the place, cries in front of a Pillayar idol etc. The entire sequence in around 3-4 minutes, and there are no dialogues... Just background music by IR... This is a scene where you cannot get away by playing the saddest song in the movie on a violin or by creating funky sounds on the synth... IR... your BGMs define what BGMs should be...

I watched Idhayathai Thirudathey what a captivating BGM. He is a genius in scoring BGM which mixes well with movie. He makes us sad and happy the way he scored the music. There is one particular scene where Nagarjun re-invents himself after he comes to know his Girl Friend lives happy today and doesn't care about tomorrow. He runs and the music also express his mood from sober to happiness.
I watched Rhythm and I liked the movie. It would have been a big hit like mouna ragam but it lacked the BGM which goes with movie. May be Rahman didn't see the movie and just scored repeated tunes of his songs and mixed with movie. May be he should get serious and help the directors in BGM department too.

while we wait for saketh, bhagavathar and others to give few more interesting BGMs lets see one of rehash BGMs in the same moondraam piram. the scene is, kamal sees sridevi for the first time in the brothel house. there is short piece mouthed by IR(i think) as BGM. its the version of the song from other movie, the song is "sandhangal paadaatha kavidhai...yaar thanthathu", a very good song indeed.
its nice that people talk about good BGMs of IR, ARR. Even Deva's (ie. sabesh-murali's) BGMs in some music are also very nice (may be they are copied, may be not, but they are very nice). they are not just instrumental version of the song. but i wud love to hate BGMs (can they be called so?) of SAR. imo SAR's BGMs in any film are repetition of some of his old songs in a lala lalla la manner thats all. sometimes they make one to feel that they are nonsense.

Deva's BGM in "porkalaam" is really really very good..... though it sounds totally IRish....

"Every MD has his/her own style i think this will be the latest trend for BGMS."
this "style" was (re)introduced by SAR and was there even during GR/MSV days...nothing new about this...
calling this a new trend IMVHO, absurd...

I heard long ago in this forum that there was a project underway to publish some the BGM music of IR... any idea
Another thought...
While I am able to recollect so many BGMs of IR that make us feel sad (Nayagan, Idhayam, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, Sethu, etc.) I cannot remember anything funny. Can anybody post some funny ones...

I watched Nayagan today what a class movie even though its an inspiration from God Father. Its a movie with all round performance. I really liked the love theme tuned by IR. When Kamal meets Saranya he starts with a guitar and picks it up with violin man! what a haunting music which stays with you forever. When villans are introduced the BGM express their bad feeling towards the hero. When Kamal meets his daughter in her house BGM enhances the scene I don't have words to explain.

another piece where IR excels in the same way as you told about MMKR is Singaravelan....the movie goes on fast-paced in kamal's attempt to get kushbu's attention and love and then finally one day kushbu comes to kamal's place and invites him for their engagement, man!!!! the piece is ultimate, there is a flute with violin background...

Do you all remember aval oru thodar kathai. In the climax, last 10 mints no dialogues. Only background scores. Finaly sujatha says, "poittu vaaremma." It is wonderful BGM by MSV.
BGM should support the mood of the scene. And it should not over take. If takes, it will be like listening good music. Music will be good. People will start enjoying the music than the scene.

Sethu,
The BGM when the van arrives to take the hero to the 'Mental Health centre - Aandimadam' and subsequent music piece while showing the centre - what a haunting piece of music !! (Also notice the bass flute which follows IR's pallavi in the song - Enge sellum intha paathai )
IR says that the objective his BGM is create silence at appropriate places ! Now, the scene when the hero takes the heroine outside the town and expresses his love in a 'threatening' fashion.Ummm... IR is right on target. (Also the library scene ...)
Please share - let us enjoy the ocean of IR's BGM.

There are instances where, IR has made BGM from his old songs. For eg, the starting music of "Poongathave" from Nizhalgal in Singaravelan, etc.

vij&S,
I'm not sure about the above piece. But Raja has definitely played old tunes in some apt situations...one being the dumb_charade that Revathy plays with her compatriots in the film `AN pAvam', when she gives signs for finding out the name of BR, some pudhiya vArpugaL tune is the BGM...

Subbu,
Great observation. When the song 'Enge Sellum Indha Padhai' followed by the chorus, and Vikram turns his face towards the camera the effect is phenomenal. This is just great anticipation and imagination from IR from the film director's input.
Please give me more examples of how a "bass flute" sounds like. Is it created from a regular flute or not?

Bass flute is just a thicker flute (like the one used by Hariprasad Chaurasia). IR uses bases flute for 'hill' (kurinji) setting. (like the malai kovil song in veera. Used in the first interlude).

That's precisely why IR is the God of BGM. The real music track is the one which is in unison with the storyline and mood of the film.
Though ARR delivers quality songs, he fails miserably when it coes to BGM. For example, in the film 'Jeans', he plays the song "Hai Rabba" in flute. That doesnt go in accordance with the scene at all. Hai Rabba is after all, a commercial song. It doesnt have a strong carnatic base. So, playing that song in the BG is totally ridiculous.
The best BGM to-date is "Nayagan". Raja Raja dhaan !!
Netru illai naalai illai
Eppavum avar Raja...
Kottai illai kodiyum illai
Appavum avar Raja....
