Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.

Raj, "MSV's tunes are good" what a discovery, i say. show me an MD whose tunes are like diamonds uncut (so much core i mean) yet so polished (elegant)
This was MSV, no Ramamurthy in this. Palooti ValarthaKkili is of course another nostalgic classic. This movie was really enjoyable to see contrasting Sivaji dual roles, one serious and proud (dramatic yet very comfortably assayed), the other role - of simpleton with a heightened sense of awareness of the immaturity of the uncle. The second role shows how Sivaji is such a thrill to watch even when he is sombre. And, Nagesh gave that frivolousity as usual to balance out the theme of the movie!!!

bb,
'andharangam' MD was Govardhanam or Sudrashanam, not MSV. This song was in colour with the rest of the film in B&W ( 'paguthi colour' as they call it!). The other partly colored films are :
1. naadOdi mannan (I am told)
2. akbar ( Tamil dub of 'mughal E Azam')
3. Devar's 'thuNaivan'
4. Sowcar's 'rangaraattinam'
5. KSG's 'swaathi natchaththiram' ( the film used to go off and on in colour, i.e. colour when the heroine gains her eyesight and B&W when she loses it again (quite a few times))
6. Shankar's Indian (Unlike the previous ones where the intent was to save money, here the idea was to show the flashback of freedom struggle in B&W)

bb,
Give me a break. This as SOTD. It will make it in the land of thte deaf! Or the only other singers are Ilaya Raja & Gangai! Kamal has a sound theoretical knowledge but when it comes to practice... Exceptions like Sundari Neeyum are there but he is more suited to the " Ramasamy kandasami" number in P K S where his "saw chain "of a voice was put to good effect by Deva ;-) similarly the old" Anna vaaada thambi vaada" had the same effect.

bb, md for "Andharangam" is a Mal film music director . I think it is Devarajan who also mded for films like Paruvakaalam, Swami Aiyappan, Annai Velankanni.

Yes-MD is G Devarajan.
Maya Arts' Andharangam- 1975 was a film by Perasiriyar AS Prakasam. I think Kamal runs a fitness center (!) and Deepa ( alias Unni Mary-her debut in tamil?) is his student ;)
Good score by Devarajan Master- in an interview he recalled how Kamal used to come to his house and learn the notes respectfully.
Kudhirai Kutti- KJY and Pudhumugamae- KJY & PS were two other songs in the film. And where there is Devarajan, can Madhuri be far behind ? He gave her a great solo- 'Paadaganai thedikkondu paattu vandhadhu'.

vengayam, I didn't know I was deaf :).
I sort of like
this song. Long time I had wanted to hear this. I think Kamal's voice was pretty decent then and is quite different from what it is now.
But the picturization described by bb intrigues me...
I didn't imagine that. Sort of sounds like the way Ilamai enum poongatru was picturized from Pagalil Or Iravu. Boy was that song picturized badly!

The film Gouravam somehow invokes quite a bit of nostalgia for me about Mylapore of the 70s. Though I got to see the film well into the 90s the dialogues and the acting were so typical of a brahmin family, maybe thats why it remains so etched in memory. I dont about others I think Sivaji portrayed all his brahmin characters much better than actors who were themselves brahmins. I always felt that most others overdid the brahmin accent but I felt that the dialogues and the dialect where just right as in a any brahmin family. OK before anybody gets offended this is just an observation and nothing is intended beyond that here. Esp. dialogues like "Ennada mylapore'la ennada pesikraa? Hmm kuzhala jalam varalennu...".
Another funny anecdote is that I used have a friend who would consistently flunk in hi exams, his father was an advocate. Every time he would get his report card to sign his father would invariably sing .."needhikke thunithu nindrenn ninaithathellam jayithu vandhen vEdhanaikku oru maganai veetinile valarthu vandhen"...

Song of the Day: nenjil uramuminRi from kappalOttiya thamizhan.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/nenjil_uramumindri.rm
- A powerful song from KappalOttiya thamizhan. Sung by Seergazhi Govindarajan. avar kuralil thaan eththanai thazhuthazhuppu! Music by G.Ramanathan.
- Bharathiyaar wrote this kiLik kaNNi in his frustration against the moderates in the congress party, after the Surat conference in 1907. He was angry that the moderates were disrupting the extremists' agenda, and were willing to live with the british rule. Era.Murugan writes:
As the song is aptly titled 'nadippu swadesikaL' (pseudo nationalists), you may find that Bharathi records here a historical fact glossed over by most others of his time.
Like any mass movement, the Nationalist movement of the 20's brought various people into its fold - from genuine patriots to those who practised (rather exhibited their 'patriotic leanings') now and then, as it was quite fashionable - with a snab value attached - to be identified as a swadesi . The practioners were mostly from upper middle class, like English educated lawyers of that time.
For them name dropping like those of 'Tilak', 'Gokale', 'Ranade' and usage of terms like 'indigenous textile', 'indian made salt, sugar' enabled to wear the nationalist image with gusto but at the same time enjoying the comforts of being the minians of the colonial rule.
Bharathi's outpour is directed against them.
He goes one step further and says, "sontha sahothararkal thunpaththil saadhal kaNdum sindhai irangaaradi -kiliye chemmai maranthaaradi' and 'achchamum pedimaiyum adimai chiru mathiyum uchathil kondaaradi - kiliye oomai sanankaladi'.
Bharathi's moral anger (arach cheetram) is evident in this wonderful poem.

Great Song.
It was nice to start a day with a song like that. Sirkazhi's voice suits to the tone of the song much better than a later version of the song (Yesudas ? ).

bb: Great song that applies to India even today!
This reminds me of the Bharathi songs we sang as a chorus in elementary school. But, this song was taught in a diffrent tune. I think the Carnatic vocalists also sing in that tune. Does anybody know why the tune was changed?

BB,
I am curious to know what 'eZAvathu manithan' means ? I remember vaguely from that movie that it needs an outsider to point out certain issues, since those who are concerned with them get so much used to it in course of time, that they tend to care less about it. Does that word have anything to do with Barathi?

Da Vinci,bb: The only ezavathu manithan I recall is in Kambaramayanam (Yudhdha Kaandam). There is a line 'ninnodum ezhuvaraanom' referring to Vibidanan seeking refuge under Rama. Does this have anything to do with the movie?

bb, can you create a permanent link for forumhub somewhere near the top of the main page (I mean newtfmpage.com/forum)? Right now the banner on top right switches between dhool and hub I guess.

Song of the Day: devi vandha nEram from vandichakkaram.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/devivandha.rm
- A romantic duet sung by SPB and VJ for the weekend. Music by Shankar-Ganesh. Thanks to Vijay for this song.
- Lyrics by Pulamaippiththan.
- I like the prelude of the song, and the soft voice of SPB. I think VJ and SPB bring in the right amount of classical touch to the song, without losing the romantic feel. This movie is one of the few notable albums of Shankar-Ganesh.
- The film, though, is probably not known for this song. It is known for introducing Silk Smitha to the tamil filmdom :) Vinu Chakravarthi introduced Silk Smitha, he also wrote the story and screenplay for this film.
- Did Shankar-Ganesh get cut off in their prime? http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/25012.15.47.13.html

Vandi Chakaram is a nice movie to watch. Pretty good story line also. Rowdy turning to cart puller. is it not the same theme of puthiya paathai? Except the "Silukoda kaiyala vaangik kudi" song Vandi Chakaram has a very good balance between art movie style and commercial movie style. Churuli Rajan comedy with CID Sakundala is also interesting one.
This particular song is one the best songs from Sankar Ganesh.
