Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

MS:
Thanks for saving me from becoming an 'adiyAL'.
SP: Now you know why I wanted more from MS. I am trying to catch up what I missed for three decades in Tamil movies. This website helps a lot. Just like you I am no 'adiyAL' The only 'adi's I know are in the songs I write and the songs I sing. Thanks for your patience!

MS/SP, in the case of "Aththaan" song, as is with most MSV songs, the tune was composed for pre-writen lyrics. So the lyricist sets the sandham. The composer can be credited however for interpreting it correctly, giving the correct pauses, splitting words/lines the way he chose to do, stretching words with gamakams etc. and so on to create the tune.

Vijay:
are you sure it was composed after the lyrics was written ? I will be completely surprised if it were so. In the assocn of KD-MSV both ways of composing have been done. vaan nila, if I remember was done after MSV teased KD with the tune and poked him for then being unable to come up with lyrics. But the songs like kaNNukku kulamedhu were written by KD before they were set to tune.
It is understandable with kaNNukku kulamedhu if the tune was composed later since there is a clear poetic structure in the song. But aththaan...! idhai epdi yosichu ezudhinaar KD !

One example of how MSV good give different tunes for the same poetic constructs:
The start of the song "kaNNukku kulamedhu" can be sung in the tune of "nilavu oru peNNaagi". Here although the lyrical constructs are the same, the musical phrases are completely different.

MS, I think you probably missed bb's writeup 2 pages back and MSV's clip explaining this song. Here it is:
"Listen to the rare clip of MSV commenting on the song. It is pretty interesting. He mentions that Kannadasan had written this song, approached several MDs, who couldn't do justice to the lyrics. He then came to MSV and asked him to compose a tune for that song: "kenjinaar saar!". MSV too mentions that the pauses between the words came naturally (AvM chettiyar said "veththalaip paakku madichchup pOdara nEram irukku!"). MSV says that the gap showed the vetkam of the heroine, the viraga dhaabam. Thanks to SK for this rare clip and the song"
MSV explaining this song:
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aththaanmsv.rm
(To me, I think it would have been more surprising if the MD had thought of this chandam/structure first, although MSV is quite capable of doing it. Because when you think of a tune on your own that stretching of "Aththaaaaan".. and a pause afterwards would be a little difficult to conceive, IMO)
I believe he has tuned quite a few songs first for which lyrics were written later. Examples include "aagaya pandhalile", "ponnenben siru poovenben" etc. from what I remember.

Song of the Day: neeyum naanumaa from Gouravam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/neeyumnaanumaa.rm
- Wanted to post a TMS song, and decided to put this up, for the sheer emotion brought out by TMS in this song. Even on hearing the song, one gets the feeling that this is a Sivaji song. MD are MSV/TKR. Written by Kannadasan.
- Apparently, Kannadasan aimed this song at Panju Arunachalam. R.Mahendra Raj writes:
His assistant (I do not wish to cite his name for obvious reasons as he is still around and a well known film producer too)urged the producers to give him the opportunity to pen the songs citing Kannadhasan's attitude. Incidentally, this assistant is Kannadhasan's own nephew and he took him from nowhere and groomed him up. If you see films of the sixties and seventies era you can catch up his name as assistant to Kaviarasar in the film credits. The producers of "Gauravam" did not want to take the chance but instead preferred to await Kannadhasan's return. The moment Kannadhasan returned he heard the story of how his assistant-cum-nephew nearly manoeuvered him out of this film. He could'nt stomach the fact that the very child he groomed could do such a thing. But back to business. He penned all the songs but amongst them there were two songs where he really poured out his emotions. The songs fitted the film picturisation well but only those who were close to Kannadhasan knew that they were aimed at his nephew-cum-assistant. The songs are "Paaluti Valartha Kili" and "Neeyum Nanumaa Kanna Neeyum Naanumaa". The next time if you happen to hear these two songs close your eyes and you can feel the emotions of Kaviarasar. Anyway, the whole episode was forgotten as usual as Kannadhasan is a child-at-heart person and was never known to be vindictive throughout his life. He forgives and forgets. Thats his secret of remaining jovial till his last breath in spite of all the shortcomings he faced. See you all again with yet another song background story. Bye for now.

great song in SOTD ! peps me up whenever i hear it. this song reminds me of my own challenges around me and helps me stand up to them.
i also like the beauty of lines in the second charanam - a whole avathaara story is said in just 4 lines.

THE SONG THAT MAKES ME THINK OF SIVAJI' DRAMATIC ACTING IN ALL ITS GLORY! WHAT A STANZA AND INTERLUDES FOR THIS SONG. MSV/TMS combo unbeatable! i play it now and then with Avanthan Manithan songs! This song was hugely popular in Kerala in the mid 70s, played on street corners all the time, when Salil was ruling the roost.
BB, Thanks.

Song of the Day: gnaayiru oLi mazhaiyil from andharangam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/gnaayiruoli.rm
- Sung by Kamalhaasan. Lyrics by Netaji. MD is MSV(?) . Thanks to Govind for this song.
- This is the first song that Kamal has sung for himself. He followed it up with "panneer pushpangaLE" from avaL appadiththaan and many more. As he shows in this song, he can touch high notes easily, which he also showed in "pOttu vaiththak kaadhal thittam okay kaNmaNi" from Singaravelan.
- I caught this song in Sun tv recently, and boy, this song belongs to the midnight masala list :-)) The heroine (Deepa?) does all sorts of exercises. Teasing camera angles provide the rest of the titillation. I've not seen even Sanghavi exercise this much :)
