If this topic is repeated before, I meant to ask all veterans in the forum, what they will NOW think has been the most sensational album ever in their lives. Surrounding the release and emotional impact on the fan and many people at the time. For me, Priya,KaviKkuyil, Ilamai Oonjaladigirathu, Payanangal Mudiyvathillai etc.. most of IR' 70s-80s were number 1 or so. But, recent times I rediscovered two albums and the news at that time for these two albums.
My No. 1 is Ninaithaley Innikkum - why? at that time even kids were worried that MSV was toppled by IR forever, but the comeback by MSV has no parallel - this is more earth shattering that Hotel California or Thriller albums. Even, the outrageousness of the compositions, singing of SPB, two would-be revolutioanry superstars (Rajni, Kamal) all bring back fond memories of the times, though I didn't know who MSV or IR was at that time.
No. 2: Punnagai Mannan: I just discovered the melodiousness of most of the songs. At that time, there was uproar that IR was going to take away musician jobs by computerized music and so I said to myself no artificial music for me and so avoided this album for maybe over a decade!!!!
No. 3: Ilamai Oonjaladigarathu & Priya (together were the challenge for Ninaithaley Innikkum): Sensationalism at the highest, unbelievable news these two movies, KJYesudas (peak in Hindi), Rajani controversies, and IR' Tarangini recordings.....
These I believe will are my all time no.1 thru 3s!!!!

mb,
I am reminded of an answer in Kumudam's Arasu badhilgal a long time back.
Q: IR-kum, ARR-kum enna vithyasam?
A: IR - Hindi pattu kettu kondirundha 'thamizhanai' tamizh pattu ketka vaithaar;
ARR - Hindi pattu kettu kondirundha 'hindi-kkaranai' thamizh pattu ketka vaikkiraar.

rajasaranam.....nice :>
mb,
what have rangeela and dilse got to do with TFM or sensationalism ? Roja and Bombay had already established ARR as top notch MD. That way you should be proud of IR conquering Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, unless you have a complex about Hindi cinema and other Indian cinema.

app_engine: that was the tragedy of it all, that is why I want to remake this movie ;---) however, the music was sensational and it was all about IR vs.MSV at that time for several years. Not even Rajani
Annakkilli was a different story, it was like getting back people to manvasanai, timing was also right, waning of MGR, MSV, Sivaji also etnering the overacting era.....
But, I would like to see a resurrection of NI happen for the sake of the music alone.

`payaNangaL mudivadhillai' has the following distinctions to qualify for `most sensational' from a MD centric view:
-all 7 songs were super-hit numbers resounding through out TN (A,B,C...Z centers)
-songs are still listened to and appreciated, esp ilayanilA & thOgai iLamayil
-nice variety (light,folk,semi-classical,pathos,western,solo,duet...)
-decent but average film, no super stars or director or banner or big budget, but a super hit part of the credit goes to music
- decent lyrics for all except Eh AthA
-put MD on the posters for the first time in TFM history
-film ads started for the first time with words like '.....vin innisai mazhaiyil'
...lot more

Raghu,
Shankarabharanam & Salangai Oli (sAgara sangamam) are basically Telugu albums and hence cannot be considered for TFM's most sensational title:-)
Sindhu Bhairavi is a strong contender, no doubt, for the following reasons:
-beautiful blend of pure classical with folk, a pioneering venture in that (not the regular semiclassical or fusion)
-national award winner for MD & singer
-made a film with kuppai story/dialog etc. (IMO) a big hit, with the exception, of course, of the performance of Sivakumar which was splendid
-raised appreciation level of average (light music) listeners for classical music
-started the trend of `B,C center' people discussing rAgams etc..in other words, greatly increased the number of classical-music-savvy people
-songs still being remembered, even serve as benchmark sometimes
Looks like we have a lot of contenders for the `most sensational' spot. The following are worthy of consideration too:
-agni natchathiram
-dhalapathi

Despite all your pre-coceived notions[I can almost feel the wrath from you all after reading this mail!], the real 'TRULY' sensational album which qualified for all the things app_engine listed, "ACCORDING TO ME"[disclaimer!!] is ............ hold your breath.........!
ORU THALAI RAAGAM!!!
Absolutely brilliant!
He didn't keep up to his promise is another matter but OTR was really sensational.

Annakili, Ninaithale Innikum and Roja are all exceptional albums.
Also, listening to Aadi Perukku, I could feel it must have made waves when it was released. I was not around when it was.

SK, how did i forget this? Oru Thalai Raagam, man, such a joyful hit, controversial, 2 weeks flop at Roxy in Purusawalkam, then took off like a rocket.....
I won't put Payanagal Mudiyvathilai as sensatiaonal as IR was building up already a huge superstar status and PM was kinda the poster stage....
BUT, ORU THALAI RAAGAM,actually should take no.2!!!!! T.Rajender, that bland Shankar, Jayachandran, Chandrasekar was it? all gave the superb songs a face as well.
Sankarabharanam just was due to wake up people about true power of Carnatic music. Yes, another sensational film even at the national level, and captured fan base at all levels.

OTR was no doubt sensational! One of the biggest musical hits ever!
However there are a couple of questions:
a) Was it the most sensational by sheer musical yardsticks or more on lyrical yardsticks / novel storyline / screenplay yardsticks?
b) What musical traces / trend has it left behind?
c) Songs were good, mega hits but were they really musical milestone achievements? If so what kind?

Again, "ACCORDING TO ME", I will always place OTR before NI as MSV had to prove something that he is still the great but this man TR came from nowhere and tore the industry to pieces!
MSV/IIR paahupaadu illaama, the whole Tamilnadu was humming OTR's tunes in unison for a very long time.
OTR,OTR nu paadina koottam yellaam, "O>>>>>!! TR......"!! nu bayandhu Oda aarambichchadhu thanik kadhai!! sOhak kadhai!!
But, OTR still the best! I still remember all the songs with lyrics!

SK,
adhu TR mattum illa, rajendran-aa raj:-))
If you dissect the music, it was unlike any later works of TR...(Probably TR had more role on the film as a whole and the lyrics were 100% by him, but the musical content could have had a significant contribution from AA Raj...)

That controversy may linger on for ever with no clear answers. But that's not the point. That it was "The most sensational album" is my belief, [ATM]!!

Most Sensational from IR
1. Sindubharavi
2. Mudhalmariyathai
3. Salangai oli (Esp. for Om navachivaya)
Most Sensational from ARR
1. Kandukonden Kandukonden (its the best of ARR till date, Esp. for Kannapoochi and Enge Ennathu)
2. Bombay (Esp. for Uyire)
3. Thiruda Thiruda (Esp. for Thee Thee)
All others MDS (except the older ones like MSV, KVM)

What is the average age of TFM posters? People seems to remember where OTR was released.... I was too small.. vaguely remember the facts behind the movie. (eventhough I remember all the songs..)
I guess most the posters were out of college when "Roja" released.. and no wonder you guys do not like Roja as much as Raja.

Guys check out this thread ( from 2000), not because I had started , but there was a lot of old timers who discussed on this topic, topic title
" landmark albums in TFM in last century"
http://newtfmpage.com/forum/4556.11249.23.34.21.html
SK absolutely "OTR" deserves a mention all the time, in fact I had listed ( IMO) "Oru Thalai raagam" as one album in the list ( first of it's kind in TFM)
Gyan, I like this topic it keeps adding views from Dfers from differenet perspective and time period to which they were heavily influenced, for ex. "Oru Thalai Raagam" kind of movies are probably 7 out of 10 movies made these days with college back drop, yet at this point none of them are appealing to me, could it be our chronological age in relation to our life time associating with a strong genre/type of music.
" NI" apparently was the only movie premiered in Bangalore 2 days prior to the release in TN ( It was released on Apr 12 (2 days prior to the Tamil New Year which was slated for release in TN), because of the peak audience follw up for Kamal-Rajini/KB movies during those days, the distributors from BLR were making large amounts of money with almost every other movie of kamal like 16 v, IO, Sigappu Rojakkal etc.
It did create sensation atleast in BLR and ran for decent number of days ( not a super duper hit like Apoorva sahodarargal a record for Tamil films in BLR)

Great posting, prabhudas. The link page is also very useful and sort of provided an answer to app_engine's earlier posting on OTR's milestone:
""Oru Thalai Raagam
T.Rajendar, a bonafide talent in tasty (if not always tasteful)
compositions and mannered lyrics haunted TFM for a while with this milestone
soundtrack. Unrequited love's every mood is in evidence here: longing (Kadavul Vaazhum), melancholy (Naan Oru Raasiyillaa), denial (Vaasamilla Malaridhu), self-pity (Idhu Kuzhandhai), infatuation (Ada Manmadhan), and beckoning (Koodayila Karuvaadu). ""
I have been following movies from 1954 to 2004! Nothing has affected me so profoundly like OTR!
MandhiriKumari, kalyanapparisu, thennilavu, paavamannippu, paasamalar, aadipperukku, aalayamani, paarththaal pasi theerum, veera abhimanyu, thillaana mohanaambal, uththamapuththiran, kalangarai vilaakkam, kudiyirundha koil, panaththOttam,
periya idaththu pen, salangai oli, sankaraabharanam, Ninaivellaam nithya, ninaiththaale inikkum, annakkili, PM, Sindhu Bhairavi, mudhal mariyaadhai, Roja, KM, bOMBAY, AND THE LIST IS ENDLESS WHERE THERE HAVE BEEN VERY GOOD SONGS. BUT, AS I SAID EARLIER, COMING FROM NOWHERE AND SWEEPING THE ENTIRE COUNTRY[I MEAN TN]at one stroke like a lightning was OTR and the situational songs, musical melody, singing excellence etc have no parallel, again only ATM.[according to me].
For me, that was the most sensational!
